The most reliable place to farm copper ore in Stardew Valley is the regular Mines. According to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Copper Ore page, copper begins on Mines floor 2, and the Mines page describes floors 2 through 39 as having a high concentration of Copper Nodes compared with other floors. Floors 31 through 39 are singled out as a segment where copper ore is common.

No source covered here gives a fixed amount of copper per day, per run, or per hour. Treat the Mines as the best option for focused gathering, not as a guaranteed rate, and expect your results to depend on how quickly you can clear each floor with your current pickaxe.

How to farm copper in the Mines

Focused copper farming means working through the regular Mines floors where copper nodes are common, mining every node you find, and repeating accessible floors when you need more.

  1. Reach a copper-range floor. Use the elevator to return to any floor you have already unlocked from 2 onward. If you are starting out, progress downward through the early Mines until you reach floor 2 or deeper.
  2. Scan each floor for Copper Nodes. Copper Nodes are reddish rock formations that look different from ordinary stone. Mine each one you see.
  3. Break nearby regular rocks as you move. In the copper-rich floors, the Copper Ore page notes that ordinary rocks have a high probability of dropping a single piece of copper ore, so they are worth a few swings on the way.
  4. Take a ladder when you find one if you want to push deeper. If you want to focus on copper instead, return to the elevator and repeat a floor you have already cleared.

Repeating a floor is practical gameplay guidance rather than a measured yield. Each node yields 1 to 3 Copper Ore, so the total you collect per floor depends on how many nodes are present and how many you clear.

Pickaxe speed changes how much copper you can gather

Your pickaxe determines how many hits each Copper Node takes. Faster tools mean more nodes cleared in the same amount of play time, which matters most when you are repeating floors for ore. The Tools page lists the following hit counts for Copper Nodes.

Pickaxe Hits per Copper Node Upgrade requirement
Starter pickaxe 3 Starting tool
Copper Pickaxe 2 2,000g and five Copper Bars
Steel Pickaxe 1 Not covered in this guide

The Copper Pickaxe upgrade is an efficiency purchase rather than a prerequisite. Gather some initial ore first, then smelt the Copper Bars you need for it.

The Quarry as a supplement

The Quarry is useful after you unlock it, but it is not a dedicated copper farm. You can unlock it through the Community Center Crafts Room bundles or the Joja route. Once it is open, the Quarry page describes it as a source of a mix of rocks and nodes, including copper.

  • New objects spawn each day, but existing rocks block new spawns, so clear the area regularly to keep it producing.
  • The listed Copper Node chance is 7.99% per attempted spawn. The wiki does not state the date of this figure, and it is a per-spawn chance rather than a promise that a node will appear in any given spot.
  • Because the nodes are mixed with other materials, the Quarry works best as a low-attention supplement while you do other things.

Other mining areas

Copper Nodes can also appear in several other areas: the Quarry Mine, the Hill-top and Four Corners farm maps, Skull Cavern, and the Volcano Dungeon. The Mining page establishes that these locations can contain nodes. It does not show that they produce more copper than the regular Mines, so mine nodes you encounter there, but do not travel to a harder area for copper alone without a reason to expect a faster return.

Panning for copper

Panning is an opportunistic source. To use it, remove the Glittering Boulder and receive the Copper Pan, then watch reachable lakes, ponds, and rivers for shimmering spots. A Copper Pan yields 3 to 9 ores of one randomly chosen metal type, according to the Copper Pan entry on the Stardew Valley Wiki, so panning does not guarantee copper.

Other places copper ore can come from

Copper Ore can also drop from Mine crates and barrels, from tilling soil in the Mines, from geodes, from fishing treasure chests, from artifact spots, from certain monster drops, and occasionally from shops or rewards. These are useful bonuses when they turn up, but none of them is a reliable central plan for copper, as the Copper Ore page lists them as incidental sources.

Ore versus bars

Copper Ore and Copper Bars are different items, and your copper plan should account for both. Smelting five Copper Ore with one Coal produces a Copper Bar and takes 30 in-game minutes, according to the Copper Ore page. Bars are what the Copper Pickaxe upgrade requires, so keep enough ore on hand to smelt them.

Choosing a route

  • Focused gathering: Work through regular Mines floors 2 through 39, with floors 31 through 39 described as common-copper floors.
  • Low-attention supplement: Clear the Quarry after unlocking it and let its daily spawns accumulate.
  • Already exploring: Mine any copper nodes you find in other dungeons or farm maps, but do not divert for copper alone.
  • Panning: Use it only when shimmering spots appear in reachable water and you have the Copper Pan, and accept that the metal type is random.
