Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling video game console in the United States in August 2026 and in the year to date through August, ranked by both units and dollar sales. That comes from Circana’s U.S. market data as reported by Final Weapon. The same data shows total U.S. hardware spending shrinking: $2.5 billion year to date through August, down 11% from a year earlier.
Those two facts do not conflict, because they measure different things. The headline’s claim that game spending is healthier is a separate question, and the figures available for this article do not confirm it. The section on game spending below explains what can and cannot be said.

What Circana’s August 2026 numbers show
Circana tracks U.S. retail video game sales each month. Its August 2026 data, as reported by Final Weapon, places Switch 2 at the top of the console category on both measures: units sold and dollars spent. The same reporting covers the category as a whole, and the category is shrinking.
| Measure | Period | Value | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. video game hardware spending | August 2026 | $302 million | Down 3% |
| U.S. video game hardware spending | Year to date through August 2026 | $2.5 billion | Down 11% |
| U.S. hardware units sold | August 2026 | 559,000 | Down 15% |
| Average U.S. hardware price | August 2026 | $541 | Compared with $476 in August 2025, the previous August record |
All four figures are Circana data as reported by Final Weapon. Hardware spending figures cover consoles and related hardware only. They do not include games, add-on content, or accessories.

Why spending can fall while Switch 2 leads
Hardware spending is roughly units sold multiplied by average selling price. August 2026 illustrates the point: 559,000 units at an average of $541 comes to about $302 million. Fewer units sold at a higher average price can produce a smaller dollar total, even when the leading console sells better than its rivals.
Two things follow from that arithmetic:
- A leader in units or dollars does not mean the category is growing. Switch 2 can take the top position in a market where total hardware dollars are falling.
- Price changes shift the picture. A higher average price raises the dollar value of each sale but reduces the number of buyers who can afford to purchase, so the dollar and unit trends can point in different directions.
How price fits into the picture
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, addressed the price question in the company’s FY2026 results Q&A on May 11, 2026. He tied a hardware price revision to rising memory and component costs and other market conditions. He also acknowledged the trade-off:
“we recognize that this raises the barrier for entry to a certain extent for people deciding whether to make a purchase.”
The Q&A is the source for that reasoning, but it does not say price alone explains the August decline. Unit demand, buyers’ choices across consoles, and the mix of hardware sold all contribute, and the reporting does not isolate each one.

Nintendo’s own sales figures are a different measure
Nintendo reported fiscal 2026 results, covering the year that ended March 31, 2026, in a report dated May 8, 2026. Those figures are company-wide sell-in, not U.S. monthly market tracking.
- Switch 2 hardware: 19.86 million units sold in FY2026.
- Switch 2 software: 48.71 million units sold in FY2026.
- Digital sales: 407.6 billion yen in FY2026, up 25.0% year over year, equal to 54.6% of dedicated-platform software sales.
Nintendo defines sell-in as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including partner sales and direct website sales. Its digital-sales category includes downloadable packaged games, download-only software, add-on content, and Nintendo Switch Online, among other items. Bundled software revenue is classified as hardware revenue. Because the scope is global and the method differs from Circana’s, these totals cannot be compared directly with the U.S. market figures above.
Furukawa also linked software to hardware adoption in the same Q&A: “The availability of software that people want to play is a key factor supporting the transition to Nintendo Switch 2.”
Is game spending healthier?
The title’s claim that game spending is healthier is not established by the figures available for this article. Three points explain why.

- No August content figure is available for this article. Circana’s hardware decline is a hardware number. It does not say whether games, add-on content, or accessories grew, shrank, or held flat in August 2026, and no growth rate for those categories is stated.
- The only total-market projection predates the August data. Circana’s February 11, 2026 forecast projected U.S. consumer spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories at $62.8 billion in 2026, up 3% from $60.7 billion in 2025. That 2025 total was up 1.4% in Circana’s reporting. The $62.8 billion is a projection made in February, not a measured result, and it is not an August comparison.
- A hardware decline does not show content strength. Hardware falling 11% year to date is compatible with several outcomes for game spending, including growth, flat sales, or decline. Without the content numbers, the data cannot choose among them.
The defensible statement is narrower: U.S. hardware spending is falling, and Switch 2 leads hardware by units and dollars. Whether game spending is healthier should wait for Circana’s content-category figures for the same period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read these numbers
- Check whether a figure is unit sales, dollar spending, or average price before comparing it with another.
- Treat Nintendo’s fiscal-year sell-in totals as company-wide shipments to channels and direct sales, not as U.S. consumer sell-through.
- Keep Circana’s February forecast separate from any reported August or year-to-date result.
- Confirm the period: August 2026 for monthly figures, and January through August 2026 for year-to-date figures.
If you are considering a Switch 2
The market data shows Switch 2 is the console most U.S. buyers chose in August 2026 and year to date through August. It does not show it is the right choice for every player. Before you buy, check the current edition, bundle contents, and retail price. Nintendo’s May 2026 Q&A describes a hardware price revision, so confirm the price on Nintendo’s site or at your retailer rather than relying on older listings.
The Bottom Line
Switch 2 leads U.S. console sales by units and dollars through August 2026, while total U.S. hardware spending is down 11% year to date to $2.5 billion. The data does not show that game spending is healthier, so that part of the headline should not be repeated as fact until Circana publishes August content-category figures.
