A report says Starbucks worked with advisers in recent months on a possible proposal to buy Chipotle, but neither company had publicly confirmed talks as of Oct. 8, 2026. The nearly $39 billion figure cited in coverage is Chipotle’s reported market value—not a confirmed offer price—and it remains unclear whether Starbucks will make a formal offer.

What has been reported—and what has not

Dexerto, citing the Financial Times, reported on Oct. 8, 2026, that Starbucks had worked with advisers in recent months on a possible takeover proposal for Chipotle. That reporting describes preliminary consideration, not an announced bid or completed transaction. Dexerto’s report and a same-day Seeking Alpha abridged transcript say the status was uncertain and a deal might never materialize.

  • No formal offer or agreement was established in the reviewed coverage.
  • Neither Starbucks nor Chipotle had publicly confirmed the reported talks in that coverage.
  • The sources reviewed did not provide transaction terms, a financing structure, or an offer price.

These points describe the reporting available on Oct. 8, 2026; they do not establish whether either company has made a later announcement.

Why the companies are linked

Brian Niccol led both businesses

Brian Niccol is the personal connection behind the speculation. Dexerto reports that he became Starbucks CEO in September 2024 after leading Chipotle for six years. His familiarity with Chipotle may help explain why a possible combination is being discussed, but it is not evidence that an acquisition is planned.

International reach is one proposed rationale

Northcoast Research analyst Jim Sanderson argued that Starbucks’ licensed partnerships in Europe could offer a way to help Chipotle expand internationally. That is an analyst’s view of a potential strategic benefit, not a disclosed Starbucks plan or a demonstrated synergy. The report also points to Starbucks’ ongoing turnaround as context; in July 2026, Niccol was quoted as saying, “We have more work to do.”

What the reported billions mean

Dextero’s Oct. 8 article cited Chipotle’s market value at nearly $39 billion and Starbucks’ market capitalization at approximately $107 billion. Those are time-sensitive market figures attributed to secondary reporting, not transaction values. The nearly $39 billion figure does not establish what Starbucks might offer, and the reviewed coverage provides no basis for calculating a deal premium.

Potential benefits and risks remain hypothetical

Consideration Why it matters What is established
International expansion Starbucks’ licensed partnerships could, in theory, support Chipotle’s growth in markets such as Europe. An analyst raised this as a possible benefit; no plan or realized synergy was announced.
Financing A large acquisition could require substantial borrowing or share issuance. Analysts described this as a concern; no financing terms were disclosed.
Management focus Taking on another major business could complicate Starbucks’ efforts to improve its own operations. This is a reported concern, not a confirmed assessment by either company.

eToro global market strategist Lale Akoner warned that a deal could involve heavy borrowing or issuing shares and might be viewed by investors as an expensive distraction without a compelling financial case. These comments describe possible risks, not known deal mechanics or a settled investor response. Dextero’s coverage also cites separate Semafor reporting that Chipotle may have enlisted bankers and considered takeover defenses; the reviewed material does not verify that development through a direct company statement.

How to read the story

  • Treat “looking to buy” as a description attributed to reporting about adviser work, not proof that Starbucks made an offer.
  • Read the nearly $39 billion figure as reported market-value context, not a bid price.
  • Distinguish proposed strategic logic and analyst concerns from confirmed company plans or transaction terms.
