Redd can sell 43 different artworks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 30 paintings and 13 statues. Twenty-seven have forgery variants, while 16 are always genuine. This guide lists the exact fake tell for every painting and statue, explains how to unlock Redd and his shops, and covers what to do with unwanted fakes.
How to unlock Redd and the museum art gallery
There are two unlock situations, depending on when your island reached the museum upgrade stage.
Newer progression under the 2.0-era system
If your save is progressing under the system introduced with the free Version 2.0 update, the museum can move directly from Blathers’ tent toward the version that includes the art gallery. You should not automatically assume that the old 60-donation requirement applies to every current save. The 2.0 implementation can skip the intermediate museum level that had no art gallery; the exact progression is documented in the 2.0 update research and the current museum reference.
Older saves already using the pre-2.0 museum
If your island had already upgraded to the museum without an art gallery before Version 2.0, the older requirement can still apply. Blathers needs at least 60 total fish, bugs and/or fossils before he starts the art-gallery sequence. This is why older guides and newer guides can appear to contradict each other: both describe different save states.

- Find Redd wandering somewhere on your island.
- Buy his introductory painting.
- Take the painting to Blathers.
- Donate it to trigger or complete the museum expansion.
- After the museum reopens, speak to Redd again.
- On later visits, Redd will let you enter the Treasure Trawler.
The painting sold during the introductory sequence is genuine. After that, Redd’s normal stock can contain genuine pieces, fakes, or—unusually—four fakes.

Unlocking Redd’s permanent Harv’s Island shop
Harv’s Island’s open-air market becomes available after your island reaches a three-star rating and K.K. Slider performs his first concert. Redd’s stall is one of the stalls you fund with 100,000 Bells. This market is part of the free Version 2.0 update; Happy Home Paradise is not required. Where to find Redd and how his shops work
Treasure Trawler on your island
After Redd has granted access, look for his boat at the small secret beach on the north coast of your island. Open your map to check for Redd’s visitor marker, then walk to the beach and enter the Treasure Trawler. You may need a ladder to reach the beach if you have not built a convenient route.
Inside the boat, Redd displays four artworks and two furniture items. Each artwork costs 4,980 Bells. Select an artwork and choose the option to take a closer look before buying; use the camera controls to zoom and rotate the model so you can inspect the feature listed in the tables below.
- You can buy only one piece of art per player per day.
- Furniture purchases do not use the art limit.
- The artwork is mailed to your home and arrives the following day.
- Redd’s island appearance is part of the rotating special-visitor system. He is not reliably tied to one fixed weekday or an exact once-every-two-weeks schedule.
Multiple players and island residents
Other human residents on the same island can buy their own artwork, with the one-piece-per-player-per-day limit applying separately to each player. Visitors can also buy from Redd in appropriate multiplayer situations; the purchased item is mailed to the buyer later. This is particularly useful when the boat has more than one genuine piece.
Redd’s Co-Op shop at Harv’s Island
Redd displays two art pieces at Harv’s Island. The shop remains available throughout the week after it is funded, but its ordinary stock is not a completely new pair every day.
- The weekly stock resets on Monday.
- If you buy an artwork, that sold item is replaced the following day.
- If you do not buy, the same displayed item can remain until the weekly reset.
- You can still buy only one artwork per player per day.
- Both genuine and fake art can appear.
Harv’s shop is therefore a useful second source of checks, not a guaranteed daily supply of real museum pieces. The Redd reference and Photopia reference describe its player-facing behavior.
Always-genuine art: the quick list
These 16 pieces have no forgery models in New Horizons. If Redd offers one, you do not need to compare it with a fake. However, always genuine does not mean Redd is guaranteed to offer one on a particular visit.

Important New Leaf warning: older guides are not safe to use without checking the game in front of you. In particular, the Dynamic painting is always genuine in New Horizons, even though Animal Crossing: New Leaf guides may describe a fake version.
Complete painting real-versus-fake list
The first name in each row is the name used by Redd and by the museum. The real-world title is included to help identify the image; the game uses its own in-game names. This comparison follows the current New Horizons forgery list and art reference.

Complete statue real-versus-fake list
Statues can be harder to inspect than paintings because the differences may be a small accessory, a facial expression, or a reversed pose. Rotate the model before buying. The full current comparison is based on the forgery reference and art list.

Animated and haunted fake art
Some forgeries are not static. Their animation is a useful extra clue, but it is not a substitute for the ordinary visual tell: you may inspect the piece at the wrong time of day or fail to trigger the interaction.

- Wistful painting: the fake subject can open and close her eyes.
- Ancient statue: the fake can float and its eyes can glow.
- Informative statue: the fake can glow.
These effects can make fakes valuable as decoration. They are especially useful for haunted-house, Halloween, cursed-gallery, abandoned-building, or supernatural island designs.
Redd’s art odds and the best buying strategy
Treasure Trawler odds
The following boat distribution comes from game-data research rather than an official Nintendo probability table. On a normal visit, the four art slots can contain:

That means Redd is not required to have a genuine item. Four fakes are a valid ordinary outcome, and the most common result is three fakes plus one genuine piece. Each genuine boat slot is also commonly documented as having a separate 20% chance to select from the player’s not-yet-donated art pool. These mechanics are attributed to current game-reference data and reverse-engineered 2.0 documentation, not to a Nintendo-published odds table.

Harv’s Island odds and cycling
Harv’s Island uses a different, data-mined system:

- At the start of a week, the first slot is guaranteed genuine if the previous week generated no genuine art; the second slot has a 30% genuine chance.
- If the previous week did generate genuine art, both starting slots have a 30% genuine chance.
- When a bought piece is replaced, replacement stock begins with a 20% real-art rate.
- That rate increases by five percentage points every time you buy a fake.
- The game generates no more than two genuine pieces per week at Harv’s Island.
- The weekly reset cannot use always-genuine pieces for that specific start-of-week roll.
These figures are reverse-engineered mechanics, not official Nintendo documentation; the detailed source is the Redd data and collection guide.
Practical strategy for museum completion
- Buy a genuine item you have not donated. This is always the best use of your daily purchase when completing the museum.
- Check every slot before deciding. Do not stop after finding one real-looking item; another slot may contain a different missing piece.
- Prioritize the exact missing entry. The Wild painting left half and Wild painting right half are separate museum pieces, so confirm the color and side.
- Use statues as a priority when they appear. There are only 13 statues, and their accessories and poses can be less familiar than painting tells.
- Buy a genuine duplicate only for décor or trading when no missing genuine artwork is available.
- Buy a fake at Harv’s Island only deliberately—for its animation, for decoration, or to cycle that stall. A fake improves the replacement odds but does not guarantee a real item tomorrow.
- Avoid buying on Sunday if efficient cycling is your goal. Monday’s weekly reset is close, so spending a daily purchase to cycle stock may be less useful.
What happens when you buy fake art?
A fake cannot be donated to Blathers, and Nook’s Cranny will not buy it. It remains an ordinary furniture item in your inventory rather than being renamed to something such as “fake painting.” Authenticity is determined by inspecting the model or attempting the museum donation.
Fakes are not completely useless. You can:
- Display them as furniture in your house or outdoors.
- Use the animated, glowing, or floating variants in haunted and supernatural builds.
- Create a gallery that deliberately shows genuine and forged versions.
- Use them in Halloween, abandoned, villainous, or cursed-island designs.
- Trade or gift them where the game permits the item to be transferred.
- Discard them through an appropriate trash receptacle when you do not want to keep them.
What should you do on a difficult Redd visit?
Redd has several genuine pieces
Compare all four items first. Buy the genuine piece your museum still needs. If several are missing, use the item names and tells in the tables to confirm each one; do not choose based only on whether a work looks famous. If multiple human players are available, each can buy a separate art piece on the boat.
Every piece is fake
Do not buy merely because Redd is present. Four fakes can appear, and buying one does not reveal a hidden genuine item. Wait for another island visit, check Harv’s Island, or visit another player’s island. Buy a fake only if you want the décor or need to cycle Harv’s stock.

You bought a fake by mistake
There is no museum penalty beyond losing that day’s purchase and Bells. Keep it for decoration, trade or gift it where appropriate, or discard it. You cannot sell it at Nook’s Cranny or donate it to Blathers.

Redd is not on the island
- Check the northern secret beach and your map for his visitor marker.
- Confirm that you completed the museum and first-Redd sequence.
- Check Harv’s Island, where his permanent shop is separate from his island visits.
- Remember that special visitors rotate; Redd is not guaranteed on a particular weekday.
- Make sure the game is updated if an expected Version 2.0 or later feature is missing.
The Treasure Trawler will not open
You must first complete the introductory Redd encounter and donate the genuine first painting to Blathers. After the museum reopens, speak to Redd again. If you are on an older save with the pre-2.0 museum state, verify that the art-gallery progression has actually been triggered rather than relying only on a modern guide’s unlock steps.

Harv’s stock did not change
Buying one of the two displayed pieces causes that slot’s replacement to appear the following day. Unbought pieces can remain until Monday’s weekly reset. Harv’s shop is not a guaranteed two-new-items-every-day system.
A New Leaf guide disagrees with this guide
Use the model in your copy of New Horizons. Forgery models differ between games, and some pieces that could be fake in New Leaf are always genuine here. Dynamic painting is the clearest example.
Museum collection checklist
To complete the art wing, donate all 43 entries: 30 paintings and 13 statues. The two Wild painting halves count as separate entries. The 16 always-genuine works are not a separate collection; they are simply the pieces with no fake variants. For a complete name-by-name reference, use the painting and statue tables above or the current New Horizons art database.

Can Redd sell four fake pieces at once?
Yes. A normal Treasure Trawler visit can contain four fake artworks, and current game-data references cite this outcome at 10%. Redd is not guaranteed to offer one genuine item.
Is the Dynamic painting always real?

Each player can buy only one artwork per day. The Treasure Trawler has four art slots, and furniture purchases do not use the art limit. Separate human residents or eligible visitors can buy their own pieces.

How often does Harv’s Island art stock change?
The normal stock resets weekly on Monday. If you buy an artwork, that slot is replaced the next day; an unbought piece can remain until the weekly reset.
Should I buy fake art at Harv’s Island?
Only if you want its decoration or need to cycle the shop. Buying a fake improves the data-mined replacement odds by five percentage points, but it does not guarantee genuine art the next day.
Which fake artworks are haunted or animated?
The fake Graceful, Scary, and Wistful paintings can change behavior. The fake Ancient statue can float and glow in the eyes, while the fake Informative statue can glow. These effects may depend on interaction or time of day.
Can fake art be sold?
No. Nook’s Cranny will not buy fake art, and Blathers will reject it as a donation. You can display it, trade or gift it where permitted, or discard it through an appropriate trash receptacle.
Does the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition add new Redd art?
Nintendo’s Ver. 3.0.0–3.0.3 update notes do not list new Redd artwork or new museum art, so the current reference remains 43 pieces: 30 paintings and 13 statues.
The Bottom Line
For museum completion, inspect all four boat slots, buy only a genuine piece you have not donated, and remember that Redd can legally offer four fakes. Harv’s Island provides another way to check for art, but its stock is weekly and its genuine-art mechanics are not guaranteed. When in doubt, use the exact feature in the tables—not an older New Leaf guide.
