The Retropian Color Retro Handheld Gaming Console is a Linux-based R36S-family device for classic game emulation, with a 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS display, 64GB microSD card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C charging, and a 3000mAh battery advertised for 6+ hours. PCWorld Shop also claims 10,000+ included games and support for more than 20 systems.
The important qualification is that the game count, battery life, multiplayer functions, and broad emulator list come from retailer and brand copy rather than independent testing. Retropian calls the product “Retropian Color (R36S),” but marketplace R36S consoles can differ by revision, seller, firmware, storage, and included accessories.
Key takeaways
- The Retropian Color is a Linux-based retro handheld with a 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS display, dual analog sticks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB-C charging.
- PCWorld Shop lists a 64GB microSD card, more than 10,000 included games, support for more than 20 retro systems, and a 3000mAh battery rated for 6+ hours.
- Retropian identifies the product as Retropian Color (R36S), but that model-family label does not prove that every marketplace R36S listing uses identical hardware or software.
- The listed system range includes NES, SNES, Game Boy systems, PlayStation 1, N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, arcade platforms, and others; the list is retailer-provided rather than independently tested.
- The included microSD card holds important system and game data, so buyers should back it up and be prepared to replace it if necessary.
What is the Retropian Color Retro Handheld Gaming Console?
The Retropian Color Retro Handheld Gaming Console is a pocket-sized, Game Boy-style Linux handheld sold through PCWorld Shop. The device is built for local retro emulation rather than modern PC games, and the product listing describes a 3.5-inch IPS screen, 64GB of included storage, wireless connectivity, USB-C charging, and compatibility with more than 20 retro systems.
Retropian’s own product page calls the model Retropian Color (R36S). That makes “R36S retro handheld game console” a useful model-family description when searching for comparable listings, but buyers should not assume that every R36S-branded console is identical. Sellers can use the same family name for different revisions, operating-system images, storage cards, accessories, or preloaded libraries.

PCWorld Shop markets the product with the phrase “Relive Retro Gaming On the Go with This Portable Console’s 10,000+ Games, 3.5" IPS Display, 6-Hour Battery, and 2-Player Support via Wi-Fi & Bluetooth.” That is retailer marketing, not an independent test result. The same caution applies to the advertised game count, battery life, multiplayer functions, and emulation coverage.
What are the Retropian Color specifications?
The published specifications describe a small Linux handheld with a 4:3 display and controls suited to both 2D consoles and systems that used analog input. The table below separates product-page specifications from independent measurements: the dossier contains no hands-on testing or controlled benchmark results.
| Specification | Retropian Color listing | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 3.5-inch IPS | Compact screen with the viewing advantages associated with IPS technology |
| Resolution | 640×480 pixels | Native 4:3 resolution suited to many classic systems |
| Operating system | Open-source Linux | Designed around an emulation-focused handheld interface rather than Windows or Android |
| Processor | ARM Cortex-A7 dual-core | Retro-oriented hardware; the listing does not establish equal performance across all systems |
| Memory | 1GB DDR3 RAM | Published system memory specification |
| Included storage | 64GB microSD card | Preloaded storage can be backed up, replaced, or expanded |
| Battery | 3000mAh; 6+ hours advertised | Actual runtime will vary with brightness, volume, wireless use, emulator, and battery condition |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Useful for the listed multiplayer and connectivity features, subject to software support |
| Controls | D-pad, dual analog sticks, ABXY buttons, shoulder triggers | More flexible than a basic four-button retro layout, especially for 3D-era systems |
| Audio | Dual stereo speakers and 3.5mm headphone jack | Supports built-in or wired listening |
| Charging | USB-C | Uses a widely available cable type; the dossier does not verify a fast-charging standard |
| Size and weight | Approximately 6.5 × 1.8 × 4 inches; 250g / 0.55lb | Portable, but not an ultra-light keychain-sized device |
These specifications come from the PCWorld Shop product listing and Retropian’s product information. Product revisions can change, so buyers should compare the live listing with the unit they intend to purchase.
What games can the Retropian Color play?
The Retropian Color product page lists more than 20 retro platforms, including Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Atari, arcade, home-computer, and PC-Engine systems. “Supports” should be read as a stated software or emulator target, not as proof that every game on every platform runs at full speed.
| Platform group | Systems listed by the retailer | Confidence boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo | NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64 | Listed compatibility; no independent title-by-title performance testing was supplied |
| Sega | Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Gear, Master System, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast | Different Sega systems have very different emulation demands, so results may vary substantially |
| Sony | PlayStation 1 | Listed as supported; no verified frame-rate or game-compatibility results are available |
| Arcade | MAME, Neo Geo, CPS1, CPS2, CPS3, FBA/Final Burn Alpha | Arcade compatibility depends on emulator version, ROM set, and individual game |
| Atari | Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx, Jaguar | Listed compatibility; the dossier does not independently confirm each platform |
| Other computers and consoles | PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16, MSX, Amiga, Commodore 64, and other systems | Included emulator support does not guarantee a complete or correctly licensed game library |
Can the Retropian Color run PS1 or N64 games? The retailer lists both PlayStation 1 and N64 among the supported systems, but the available evidence cannot confirm full-speed performance for every PS1 or N64 title. The same limitation is especially important for the listed Dreamcast, Saturn, Jaguar, and Sega CD support, which should not be treated as a promise of uniform compatibility.
The product page also claims support for custom firmware, ROM expansion through microSD, a customizable interface, and multiplayer through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Those are advertised capabilities rather than independently verified features in this research. Only add games that you own or otherwise have the legal right to use, and do not assume that all games preloaded on a third-party card are licensed.

Is Retropian Color the same as an R36S?
Retropian Color is identified as an R36S by Retropian, so the safest answer is that Retropian Color belongs to the R36S model family. The identification is not proof that every product sold under the generic R36S name has the same screen, processor, firmware, microSD contents, build quality, or seller support.
For a purchase search, R36S retro handheld game console is a reasonable phrase to use after checking the specific listing. Compare the photographs, controls, storage card, operating-system details, warranty, return terms, and seller identity rather than buying solely from the R36S label.
How many games come on the Retropian Color?
PCWorld Shop advertises more than 10,000 included games on the supplied 64GB microSD card. The claim describes the retailer’s advertised library, not a verified count of unique, working, or legally licensed games.
The package contents listed by PCWorld Shop are one Retropian Color handheld, one 64GB microSD card preloaded with games, one USB-C charging cable, and one user manual. Because the microSD card contains the system and game data, the card is a practical part of the purchase rather than disposable packaging.
What SD card works with the Retropian Color?
The Retropian Color includes a 64GB microSD card and supports expandable storage, but the available product information does not specify a confirmed maximum capacity, required speed class, or exact replacement-card procedure. Buyers should therefore verify those details in the current manual or with the seller before purchasing a larger card.
- Back up the included card before changing files or attempting custom firmware.
- Keep an untouched backup separate from the handheld so a failed card does not remove the only copy of the system files.
- Use legally obtained game files and preserve the original card contents before experimenting.
- Buy a replacement or expansion card only after confirming the supported capacity and imaging instructions for the exact hardware revision.
One of the six verified-purchaser reviews shown during the research pass reported that the included SD card stopped booting after the reviewer backed up the games and needed replacement. That is a single customer report, not a failure-rate statistic, but it is enough to make a backup a sensible first step.

How long does the Retropian Color battery last?
The Retropian Color has a listed 3000mAh battery and an advertised battery life of 6+ hours. The six-hour figure is a manufacturer or retailer claim, not an independently measured runtime, and actual use can change with screen brightness, volume, wireless connectivity, emulator workload, and battery age.
USB-C charging is included, but the available evidence does not establish fast charging, charger compatibility beyond ordinary USB-C use, or pass-through charging behavior. Buyers who need a replacement cable should verify the model’s requirements rather than assuming support for a particular charging protocol.
Does the Retropian Color support multiplayer?
The product listing claims two-player support through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The listing does not provide enough detail to determine which systems, games, controllers, pairing modes, or emulator versions work with multiplayer, so the feature should be treated as a stated capability requiring practical verification.
For solo play, the built-in D-pad, dual analog sticks, ABXY buttons, shoulder triggers, speakers, and headphone jack cover the main control and audio needs. The dual sticks are potentially useful for 3D-era systems, but their presence alone does not establish smooth Dreamcast, N64, Saturn, or PlayStation gameplay.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs the Retropian Color worth buying?
The Retropian Color is most appealing to buyers who want a compact, ready-to-use retro handheld with a 4:3 screen, a large advertised library, dual analog sticks, wireless features, and a Linux-based interface. The device is less suitable for buyers who require independently verified performance, guaranteed licensing for preloaded games, premium build quality, or modern PC and console games.
| Buyers who may like it | Buyers who should be cautious |
|---|---|
| Players focused on classic Nintendo, Sega, Atari, arcade, and computer systems | Players expecting every listed PS1, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, or Jaguar game to run perfectly |
| Buyers who value a 3.5-inch 4:3 display and pocket-sized design | Buyers who want a larger modern display or a device for current PC games |
| People comfortable backing up storage and managing legally owned game files | People who want guaranteed licensed content without checking the included library |
| Shoppers who can verify the current price, revision, warranty, and return policy | Shoppers buying a generic R36S listing without checking hardware and seller details |
The captured PCWorld Shop page showed a $74.99 deal price against a $119.00 suggested price, described as 36% off, with free shipping to the contiguous United States. Price, stock, delivery estimates, protection-plan availability, and warranty terms can change, so the live page should be checked before purchase. The listing showed 4.8/5 from six verified-purchaser reviews during the research pass; that small review sample should not be treated as a general reliability rating.

What accessories do I need for an R36S handheld?
The Retropian Color arrives with a USB-C cable and a 64GB microSD card, so no accessory is strictly required for initial use. A replacement or expansion microSD card, carrying case, screen protector, and spare USB-C cable are the most relevant optional purchases.
Recommended Free Tools
- Replacement or expansion microSD card: useful for backup or additional storage, but confirm capacity support and exact firmware procedures first.
- Carrying case: sensible for a portable device measuring approximately 6.5 × 1.8 × 4 inches and weighing about 250g; check joystick and button clearance.
- Screen protector: potentially useful for a handheld used in bags or on the move; verify the exact screen and bezel dimensions before ordering.
- Replacement USB-C cable: practical as a spare, although the dossier does not verify a particular fast-charging standard.
Retropian Color buying checklist
- Confirm that the live listing is the purple Retropian Color model and check the current hardware revision.
- Check the live price, shipping area, stock status, delivery estimate, warranty, protection-plan terms, and returns policy.
- Read the included-game claim as a retailer-provided library description, not proof of licensing or perfect emulation.
- Back up the included 64GB microSD card before modifying files or installing custom firmware.
- Verify the exact microSD capacity and replacement procedure before buying expansion storage.
- Choose the device for its advertised retro feature set, not as a guaranteed solution for every PS1, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, or Jaguar game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Retropian Color the same as an R36S?
The Retropian Color is identified by Retropian as Retropian Color (R36S), but that does not mean every generic R36S listing has identical hardware, firmware, storage, or support. Compare the exact seller listing and hardware revision before buying.
How many games come on the Retropian Color?
PCWorld Shop advertises more than 10,000 games on the included 64GB microSD card. The figure is a retailer claim and does not independently verify unique titles, working games, or licensing status.
Can the Retropian Color run PS1 or N64 games?
The retailer lists PS1 and N64 support, but the available evidence does not confirm full-speed performance for every game on either platform. Performance for PS1, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, and Jaguar should be treated as unverified without independent testing.
How long does the Retropian Color battery last?
The Retropian Color includes a 3000mAh battery with 6+ hours of advertised battery life. Actual runtime depends on brightness, volume, wireless use, emulator workload, and battery condition, and the six-hour claim was not independently measured.
The Bottom Line
The Retropian Color is a potentially good-value R36S-family handheld for buyers who want portable classic gaming and accept retailer-claimed emulation performance. Its strongest practical advantages are the 3.5-inch 4:3 IPS display, 64GB card, broad advertised system list, wireless features, and dual analog sticks. Its main uncertainties are real-world performance, the legal status of preloaded games, microSD reliability, and changing retail terms.
