Yes—some PC players really did report an immediate crash to desktop after enabling frame generation in Star Wars Outlaws. The reports emerged around the game’s August 2024 launch, including on high-end RTX 4090 systems. They did not prove that frame generation crashes every PC configuration, and later updates changed the game’s DLSS and frame-generation behavior.
If enabling it still crashes your copy, disable frame generation first, update the game and graphics driver, and use ordinary DLSS, FSR, or XeSS upscaling instead. Treat the original report as a launch-era problem unless you can reproduce it on the current build.

What happened with Star Wars Outlaws frame generation?
During early access on August 27, 2024, and around the full PC launch on August 30, 2024, players reported that switching on frame generation could close Star Wars Outlaws to the desktop immediately after applying or saving the graphics setting. Launch coverage included reports from systems using GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards, so the symptom was not simply a sign of underpowered hardware. PCGuide reported the launch complaints and an administrator-mode workaround.
The important qualification is scale: the available evidence was a collection of player reports, not a measured failure rate or an official statement that one universal bug affected every GPU. Some players could use frame generation normally, while others encountered an immediate crash when enabling it.

First, identify which crash you have
Not every Outlaws crash belongs to the same problem. Keep these cases separate:
| Configuration or symptom | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Local PC crashes immediately after enabling DLSS Frame Generation | Reported by some players during the 2024 launch period; no universal failure rate was established. |
| FSR 3 Frame Generation with FreeSync Premium Pro HDR | A later Ubisoft announcement documented a specific crash condition involving this combination. |
| DLSS, FSR, or XeSS upscaling with frame generation disabled | A reasonable workaround to test, although general stability remains system-dependent. |
| GeForce NOW or Amazon Luna crashes when entering Mirogana | A separate cloud-gaming issue, not the same as a local-PC frame-generation crash. |
| DX12 crashes or hangs during loading or gameplay | A broader PC stability category that can involve drivers, Windows, overlays, VRAM pressure, overclocks, or the game itself. |
Intel driver notes continued to list possible Star Wars Outlaws DX12 crashes or hangs in later 2024 packages, reinforcing that frame generation was only one possible source of instability. That does not mean a general crash was caused by the frame-generation setting.
Which technologies are involved?
Ubisoft listed DLSS 3.5, AMD FSR 3.0, and Intel XeSS 1.3 among the PC features. These technologies are related to image reconstruction but are not interchangeable:
- DLSS Frame Generation creates additional frames using NVIDIA’s technology and was primarily associated with RTX 40-series hardware at launch.
- FSR 3 Frame Generation is AMD’s implementation and has its own compatibility and display-sync behavior.
- DLSS, FSR, or XeSS upscaling lowers the internal rendering resolution and reconstructs the image. This is separate from frame generation, so you may be able to keep upscaling enabled while leaving frame generation off.
- Ray Reconstruction and RTXDI are separate rendering features. They can affect GPU and VRAM demands but are not alternative names for frame generation.
The launch reports focused heavily on NVIDIA systems, but that does not establish an NVIDIA-only bug. Ubisoft later documented an FSR 3 Frame Generation crash involving FreeSync Premium Pro HDR, showing that frame-generation failures could also involve AMD’s path and the display configuration.

The safest troubleshooting order
1. Disable frame generation
Relaunch the game, turn frame generation off, apply the setting, and test the game without it. If the game is stable, leave the feature disabled and use conventional upscaling if that remains stable. This is the safest immediate workaround because it removes the setting most closely associated with the launch-era symptom.
The exact graphics-menu labels and navigation can vary between builds and platforms. Look for the game’s graphics or display options, then the separate Frame Generation control rather than assuming that disabling DLSS or FSR upscaling also disables frame generation.
2. Update both the game and the GPU driver
Install the latest available Star Wars Outlaws update for your storefront and platform, then install the current driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU. Restart Windows before testing again. Do not assume that a launch-day report describes the behavior of the current executable.
Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.5.0, released December 12, 2024, updated the Frame Generation and DLSS options. That update is evidence that the relevant systems changed after launch, although it does not prove that every original DLSS crash was fixed.

3. Test display features separately
If you use FSR 3 Frame Generation, temporarily test with FreeSync Premium Pro HDR disabled. If necessary, also test with HDR disabled or with a different refresh-rate or display-mode configuration. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes. They are particularly relevant because Ubisoft later listed a crash involving FSR 3 Frame Generation and FreeSync Premium Pro HDR in its patch announcements.
4. Verify the installation
Use the file-verification or repair option in Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or the Epic Games Store, depending on where you installed the game. A damaged or incomplete file can cause crashes independently of frame generation.
5. Remove unofficial modifications
Restore original game files and remove unofficial DLSS DLL replacements, Nvidia Inspector overrides, and experimental driver-profile changes before testing. A player discussion associated modified DLSS files and driver settings with instability, but that report is anecdotal and does not establish causation. Unofficial DLL downloads are especially poor troubleshooting tools: they can create new compatibility and security problems.
Launch-era workarounds players reported
Several players described ways to get frame generation working during the launch period. They are worth identifying, but none should be presented as an official or universal fix.
Rank #4
Run the executable as administrator
One player cited by PCGuide said that launching the installed game executable with administrator privileges stopped the crash. The same account indicated that it did not work for everyone. Try this only after updating the game and driver and confirming that the game is stable with frame generation disabled. It should be treated as an anecdotal workaround, not a confirmed Ubisoft solution.
Change the upscaler before re-enabling frame generation
A Reddit user reported this sequence:
- Turn frame generation off.
- Switch to another upscaler.
- Apply and save the change.
- Switch back to the preferred upscaler.
- Re-enable frame generation and test.
This advice has not been verified by Ubisoft. If the crash returns, revert to frame generation off rather than repeatedly forcing the setting.
Restart or change resolution
Other launch-era players said that restarting the PC or changing the resolution allowed them to activate the setting. The reports were inconsistent, so these are low-confidence experiments rather than reliable remedies.

If the game crashes every time it starts after you enabled frame generation, work through this recovery path:
Best Value
- Disable frame generation before the next test.
- If you cannot reach the graphics menu, use the supported launcher or the game’s current configuration-reset process. The exact file location and launcher labels can differ by build, so avoid deleting random files without confirming what they do.
- Verify the game files.
- Restore original DLLs and remove driver overrides or Nvidia Inspector profiles.
- Update the graphics driver. Consider a clean driver installation only if a normal update does not help.
- Test with HDR, variable refresh, and frame generation disabled, then add features back one at a time.
If the crash continues with frame generation off, it is probably not useful to keep treating it as a frame-generation-only problem. Record the GPU model, driver version, Windows version, upscaler, frame-generation mode, HDR and VRR state, and exactly when the crash occurs before contacting Ubisoft Support.
Should you use frame generation?
Use it if the current build is stable, your GPU supports the selected mode, and your underlying rendered frame rate is already healthy. Frame generation inserts generated frames between traditionally rendered frames, which can make motion appear smoother, but an FPS counter does not represent the same improvement in input responsiveness. Judge the result by frame pacing, latency, image quality, artifacts, and stability—not the displayed FPS number alone.
Leave it off if enabling it causes a crash, produces severe artifacting or inconsistent frame pacing, or if the game is already unstable. Frame generation also does not eliminate VRAM pressure or other rendering bottlenecks. NVIDIA’s launch performance figures were vendor-provided results under specified hardware, resolution, ray-tracing, and settings conditions; they should not be treated as universal results.
Is the problem still current in 2026?
The most accurate answer is qualified. The immediate-crash reports were genuine and concentrated around the August 2024 early-access and launch period. Ubisoft subsequently changed the Frame Generation and DLSS options in Title Update 1.5.0 and later documented at least one separate FSR 3 Frame Generation and FreeSync Premium Pro HDR crash fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAs of August 16, 2026, the available evidence does not establish that the original DLSS crash remains widespread on the current build—or that every original report was resolved. Therefore, do not read the old headline as a universal present-tense warning. If your copy still crashes immediately when you enable frame generation, disabling it remains the practical answer while you isolate the game, driver, display, and configuration variables.
