For Bedrock Edition, use the official Minecraft Marketplace for add-ons. A verified mod author’s website or GitHub repository can also be legitimate, but no site guarantees that every download is harmless. Always check the author, exact file, Minecraft version, mod loader, dependencies, and file type before installing.
First, identify your Minecraft edition
“Minecraft mods” usually means Java Edition mods. A Java mod is normally a .jar file loaded by Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or another compatible loader. Java players can also download modpacks, shaders, resource packs, and data packs from modding platforms.
Bedrock Edition uses a different ecosystem. Its add-ons commonly contain behavior packs and resource packs and may use formats such as .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld. Bedrock players should not download Java .jar mods: the formats and installation systems are not interchangeable. Minecraft’s own explanation of the two editions distinguishes Java’s community-mod ecosystem from Bedrock’s Marketplace and add-on model (Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock guide).
Safest Minecraft mod sources, ranked by use case
1. Modrinth: the best default for many Java players
Modrinth is a major platform focused primarily on Minecraft: Java Edition. It hosts mods, modpacks, shaders, resource packs, data packs, and plugins, with project pages that typically show supported Minecraft versions, loaders, files, dependencies, and release information. Its filtering and project organization make it a particularly straightforward choice when you know which version and loader you are using.

Modrinth is a lower-risk, trusted default—not a malware-proof repository. Verify that you are on the real modrinth.com domain and inspect the individual project and release rather than assuming that the platform makes every file safe. Modrinth describes its role and supported content in its official information page.
2. CurseForge: the other leading Java source
CurseForge has a large catalog and an extensive modpack ecosystem. Its project pages provide compatibility information, release notes, dependencies, and installation options. CurseForge says that files go through automated processing, security checks, and manual review, while also acknowledging that no moderation process is perfect (security and moderation overview; approval-process explanation).
Download directly from the official website or official app when appropriate. CurseForge specifically warns that files imported from friends or other outside sources are not necessarily scanned or verified in the same way as files downloaded directly through its own website or app (CurseForge safety guidance).
3. The verified author’s website or GitHub repository
Some projects distribute releases from an official website, GitHub repository, or creator documentation instead of—or in addition to—Modrinth and CurseForge. This can be a sensible source when you can establish that the account belongs to the real developer and that the release is endorsed by the project’s official channels.

GitHub is not automatically safe merely because it is GitHub. Check the repository owner, project links, release history, documentation, changelog, and version details. “Open source” or “source available” also does not prove that a compiled release has been independently audited.
4. Minecraft Marketplace: the safest default for Bedrock add-ons
For Bedrock Edition, the official Minecraft Marketplace is the most controlled default. Marketplace content is installed through Minecraft rather than by downloading arbitrary Java files from third-party websites. Bedrock add-ons can be activated for new worlds, existing worlds, and Realms through the resource-pack and behavior-pack menus; Microsoft documents those steps here.
Marketplace content is curated and official, but that does not mean every item is suitable for every child, world, or play style. Availability and pricing can vary by region, platform, tax, and promotion.
5. Community sites: useful for discovery, not automatic trust
Sites such as Planet Minecraft and community forums can be useful for finding maps, skins, projects, and recommendations. They should not automatically be treated as equivalent to Modrinth or CurseForge for Java executable mods. Use them to discover a project, then follow a download link that the creator has verified on an official platform or repository.

A search-engine ranking is not proof that a download site is legitimate. Reposted files may be altered, outdated, incomplete, bundled with aggressive advertising, or replaced with malicious installers.
Modrinth vs. CurseForge: which is safer?
There is no defensible universal winner. Both are prominent, moderated sources, and both can still be targeted by impersonation, compromised accounts, malicious updates, or unsafe files. Choose based on the project and your installation needs:

“Safest” and “most convenient” are separate judgments. A cleaner interface does not prove that files are safer, and a larger catalog does not make every project legitimate.
How to verify a mod before downloading
- Check the domain. Type or bookmark
modrinth.com,curseforge.com, the official Minecraft Marketplace, or the author’s documented domain. Watch for misspellings, extra punctuation, and unrelated redirect domains. - Confirm the author. Compare the project name, icon, description, documentation, social links, repository, and creator channels. Be suspicious of cloned names, lookalike accounts, and unsupported “official” claims.
- Inspect the release history. A consistent project history and recent changelog are stronger signals than a single newly uploaded file. An unusual update from an otherwise familiar project deserves extra scrutiny.
- Match the exact Minecraft version. “1.20” or “26” is not enough if the project lists a more precise release. A mod built for one release may fail to load, crash, or create world problems on another.
- Match the mod loader. Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge are different ecosystems. A Fabric mod may not work on Forge or NeoForge even when the Minecraft version matches.
- Check the environment. The project should say whether it is client-side, server-side, or required on both sides. Do not confuse a server plugin for Paper, Spigot, or Bukkit with an ordinary client mod.
- Read dependencies and requirements. Required API or library mods, loader versions, Java versions, and installation notes can be essential. Missing a dependency can look like a security or compatibility failure when it is simply an incomplete installation.
- Confirm the file type and contents. A Java mod is normally a
.jar. A modpack may use an official launcher installation or an importable archive such as.zipor.mrpack, depending on the platform. A normal mod should not require a separate Windows executable.
CurseForge’s getting-started documentation emphasizes that mods and modpacks are not universally compatible across Minecraft versions and loaders.

Red flags: stop before opening the file
- An
.exe,.msi,.scr,.bat,.cmd, or PowerShell script presented as a normal mod. - A request to disable Windows Defender or another security tool.
- A request for your Microsoft password outside the official Minecraft or Microsoft login flow.
- A Discord attachment, unsolicited ZIP, or file sent by a stranger, server administrator, or friend without clear provenance.
- A fake “required update,” giveaway, early-access offer, or server-entry lure.
- Unfamiliar executables or unrelated JAR files inside an archive.
- Several ad pages, URL shorteners, forced notification prompts, or a download button that does not match the expected platform.
- A supposedly complete modpack represented by an implausibly small file.
- Pressure to install immediately or claims that questioning the file will make you lose access.
These warnings matter because a malicious Java file may run within the game’s Java process and potentially access files or network resources available to your user account. That is a security rationale, not a claim that ordinary Minecraft mods inherently behave maliciously.
Should you scan Minecraft mods with antivirus or VirusTotal?
Yes, as an additional check—but never as proof of safety. Keep Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus enabled. VirusTotal can provide useful signals for suspicious archives or executables, but new malware may evade detection and Java files can be difficult for automated scanners to interpret. A detection can also be a false positive, so investigate the specific result and compare the file with the author’s official release or published hash when available.
Do not upload private modpacks, private code, credentials, or files containing secrets to a public scanning service. Fabric’s player guidance recommends antivirus tools and VirusTotal while warning that false positives and false negatives are possible (Fabric’s mod-finding and safety guidance).

- Back up your worlds. Copy important saves before adding or updating mods.
- Create a separate instance. Keep modded Minecraft isolated from your ordinary profile, and retain an unmodded profile for normal play.
- Record your setup. Identify the exact Minecraft version, loader, Java/runtime requirement, and whether you are configuring a client, server, or both.
- Open the project directly. Use Modrinth, CurseForge, the official Marketplace, or a verified author source rather than an unfamiliar search result.
- Select the matching release. Confirm version, loader, environment, dependencies, file name, and changelog before downloading.
- Install trusted components from trusted sources. Download Fabric from fabricmc.net, Forge from files.minecraftforge.net, and NeoForge from neoforged.net.
- Scan anything unusual. Stop if the file is not the expected format or if security software raises a warning.
- Launch once and test. Confirm that the expected mod appears, then test a copy of a world.
- Add mods incrementally. Installing several at once makes crashes and conflicts harder to diagnose.
For modpacks, prefer installation from the official project page or the platform’s documented app workflow. An archive received from a friend or Discord can include overrides and unrelated files; importing it into a reputable launcher does not automatically make its contents trustworthy.

Common mistakes that look like malware problems
Wrong edition
A Java .jar cannot be installed as a Bedrock add-on. Bedrock players should use Marketplace content or a properly documented Bedrock add-on in the expected format.
Wrong loader
A matching Minecraft version does not make Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge mods interchangeable. Select the loader explicitly on the project page.
Wrong release
A mod may crash, fail to load, or behave unpredictably when used with a different Minecraft release. Do not assume that a nearby version is compatible.
Missing dependency
Read the project’s dependency list and install required API or library mods for the same version and loader.

Mixing files from different instances can cause conflicts. Install into the intended modded profile rather than copying files into an unrelated setup.
If you installed something suspicious
- Close Minecraft and the launcher.
- Disconnect the computer from the internet if you suspect active malware.
- Do not log into Microsoft, email, Discord, Steam, or other accounts on the potentially infected machine.
- Run a full scan with Windows Security or another reputable antivirus. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when appropriate.
- From a clean device, change important passwords and revoke active sessions.
- Review browser extensions, startup programs, scheduled tasks, and recently modified files.
- Remove the suspicious mod and restore affected worlds or profiles from a clean backup. Deleting one JAR does not always remove an infection.
- Report the file and project to the hosting platform and the mod author.
- If credentials or financial information may have been exposed, contact the relevant service immediately.
Best choice for each kind of player
- Beginner Java player: Start with the official project pages on Modrinth or CurseForge.
- Modpack player: Use the platform’s official project page and documented installation workflow.
- Advanced Java player: A verified author release or GitHub repository can be appropriate after checking identity, release provenance, compatibility, and hashes where available.
- Bedrock player: Start with Minecraft Marketplace and use documented add-on formats only when you understand the source.
- Parent: Bedrock Marketplace offers the most controlled download path; for Java, supervise sources, accounts, permissions, and installation steps.
Final verdict
For a Java mod, use Modrinth or CurseForge first. If the project is not available there, use the author’s verified official website or repository. For a Bedrock add-on, use Minecraft Marketplace first. Avoid unknown download sites, executable “mod installers,” unsolicited Discord archives, and any download that asks you to weaken security or surrender account credentials. The safest source is only one part of the decision: the exact author, release, file, compatibility data, and installation behavior matter just as much.
