No—not all wireless headphones work with Xbox. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S do not generally support ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing, so Bluetooth-only headphones, AirPods, and many PC wireless headsets cannot connect directly. Headsets designed for Xbox Wireless, supplied with an Xbox-compatible wireless transmitter, or connected through a controller’s 3.5 mm jack can work.
The important question is not whether a headset is wireless. It is whether the exact model and edition support Xbox, and which connection method they use.

Microsoft lists its Xbox Wireless Headset as compatible with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Its Bluetooth connection is intended for compatible PCs and mobile devices; the headset uses a separate Xbox connection for the console.
Does Xbox support Bluetooth headphones?
Xbox consoles do not work like phones or PCs that let you open a Bluetooth menu and pair any nearby headphones. Standard Bluetooth audio pairing is not a normal native connection method for Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

That does not mean Bluetooth is absent from every Xbox accessory. A headset can use Bluetooth for a phone or PC while using Xbox Wireless or a dedicated transmitter for Xbox. For example, the current Xbox Wireless Headset specification lists Bluetooth 5.3 and SBC support, but that Bluetooth feature is separate from its direct Xbox connection.
Therefore, seeing “Bluetooth 5.0,” “Bluetooth 5.3,” or “Bluetooth multipoint” on a product page does not prove that the headset works with Xbox.
The wireless connection types that work
1. Xbox Wireless
Xbox Wireless is Microsoft’s console-focused wireless protocol. Compatible headsets pair directly with Xbox in a way similar to an Xbox Wireless Controller, without requiring a USB audio dongle.
Look for product-page wording such as:
- “Designed for Xbox”
- “Xbox Wireless”
- “Connects directly to Xbox”
- “Compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S”
Direct Xbox Wireless generally provides both game audio and headset chat, although you should still check the exact model’s microphone and chat specifications.
2. An Xbox-compatible wireless transmitter
Many gaming headsets use a dedicated 2.4 GHz or proprietary wireless transmitter. This can be an excellent low-latency solution—but only if the transmitter and headset are explicitly designed for Xbox.
A generic Bluetooth USB adapter is not interchangeable with an Xbox headset transmitter. A PC-only USB dongle may receive power from the console while providing no usable game audio or microphone support. Some headsets also include separate PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox versions, with different hardware or firmware.
USB-C describes the shape of a connector, not guaranteed Xbox compatibility. Check whether the included transmitter is the Xbox version and whether it has an Xbox/PC switch that must be set correctly.
Microsoft’s Xbox headset catalogue includes Xbox-compatible examples such as the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 X Wireless, Turtle Beach Stealth 700, Razer BlackShark V2 Pro, Corsair Virtuoso Max, Audeze Maxwell, and Arctis Nova Elite. Individual models and revisions can differ, so the catalogue name alone is not enough.
3. A wired 3.5 mm connection through the controller
This is not wireless from the console, but it is the most dependable fallback for headphones that include a removable 3.5 mm cable. Microsoft says Xbox Series X|S controllers include a 3.5 mm headset jack, and controller-based headset support continues across Xbox console generations when the controller has the required jack or adapter.

- HYPERSPEED WIRELESS — Featuring an ultra-fast 2.4 GHz wireless connection, enjoy high-performance, low-latency competitive play with sound that’s perfectly synced to the game
- 3 MODES OF CONNECTIVITY — Gain the competitive edge when gaming on console, PC or mobile; seamlessly switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth with SmartSwitch Dual Wireless or stay plugged in for non-stop gaming via USB C

Connect the cable to the controller, then adjust headset volume and chat balance through Xbox audio settings. This approach avoids Bluetooth pairing, wireless interference, transmitter compatibility, and battery problems.
Will AirPods or Bluetooth earbuds work with Xbox?
Not directly through Xbox Bluetooth pairing. AirPods and typical Bluetooth earbuds generally cannot be added to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S as ordinary Bluetooth audio devices.
There are workarounds, but they are compromises:
- Connect them to the TV or monitor: If the display supports Bluetooth audio, it may route Xbox game sound to the earbuds. Delay can be noticeable, and the earbuds’ microphone usually will not function as Xbox party or game chat.
- Use a third-party adapter: Compatibility, latency, controls, and microphone support vary significantly. Do not assume an adapter works simply because it plugs into USB or the controller.
- Use the Xbox mobile app for party chat: Earbuds can handle app audio on a phone, but this does not turn them into a direct, low-latency Xbox game-audio connection.
- Use a cable or Xbox headset instead: A wired controller connection is more reliable, while an Xbox-compatible wireless headset provides the proper console connection.
TV Bluetooth is best treated as an occasional audio workaround, not an equivalent replacement for a headset connected directly to Xbox.
Will any wireless gaming headset with a USB dongle work?
No. The headset must specifically support Xbox.
Before buying, confirm all of the following:
- The exact product page names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or both.
- You are buying the Xbox edition, not a similarly named PC or PlayStation edition.
- The wireless method is identified as Xbox Wireless or an Xbox-compatible transmitter.
- The headset supports Xbox game audio and microphone/chat—not merely charging or power over USB.
- The included transmitter is intended for Xbox and has the correct mode or switch setting.
- Any required firmware update, Xbox Accessories app, or manufacturer software is available.
- The headset includes a wired fallback if that matters to you.
If a listing says only “wireless gaming headset” and does not mention Xbox, treat compatibility as unconfirmed.
Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S
Compatibility depends on the exact headset revision as well as the console generation. Microsoft lists its Xbox Wireless Headset for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but not every headset family shares that broad support.
Names such as “Stealth 600,” “Stealth 700,” “Arctis,” or “Kaira” can cover multiple generations with different transmitters, firmware, and connection methods. Check the complete model number rather than relying on the family name.
Controller-based 3.5 mm audio remains a broadly supported option, provided the controller has the necessary jack or adapter. Older Xbox One headsets that relied on optical audio may require a firmware update or a different USB-based connection on Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft specifically warned that some optical-cable headsets could need updates for game and chat audio on the newer consoles.
What “Xbox compatible” should mean
Compatibility has several parts. A headset that receives game audio is not automatically a headset that supports Xbox chat.
| Capability | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Game audio | Can it receive sound from Xbox? |
| Voice chat | Does its microphone work in party and game chat? |
| Game/chat mixing | Can game and chat volume be adjusted independently? |
| Spatial audio | Does it support Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, or DTS Headphone:X? |
| Wireless range and latency | Does it use Xbox Wireless, a dedicated transmitter, Bluetooth, or display routing? |
| Simultaneous devices | Can it stay connected to Xbox while handling a phone call? |
| Wired fallback | Does it include a 3.5 mm cable? |
| Cross-platform use | Does the exact SKU support PC, PlayStation, mobile, or Switch? |
| Firmware | Is a PC or mobile app needed for updates? |
| Battery | How does it charge, and can it be used while charging? |
Microsoft says its Xbox Wireless and Xbox Stereo Headsets support spatial-audio technologies including Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X. Availability can depend on supported content, software, hardware, and possible additional purchases.

How to connect a compatible Xbox Wireless headset
Button names and sequences vary by manufacturer. For Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Headset, the general process is:
- Turn on the Xbox console.
- Turn on the headset.
- Hold the headset’s power or pairing control as directed until pairing mode starts.
- Press the console’s pairing button if the headset instructions require it.
- Wait for the headset and console to connect.
- Open Xbox audio settings to adjust volume, game/chat balance, microphone monitoring, and related options.
Microsoft’s headset catalogue describes pairing a wireless headset by turning on both devices and holding the headset power button for approximately four seconds, but do not apply that sequence universally to every brand or model.

- Confirm the SKU. Make sure it is the Xbox version, not the PC, PlayStation, or Switch version.
- Check the connection method. Bluetooth pairing alone is not enough. Use the Xbox Wireless connection or the supplied Xbox transmitter.
- Check the transmitter mode. If it has an Xbox/PC switch, select Xbox before connecting it.
- Disconnect other devices. A phone or another console may have captured the headset’s Bluetooth or wireless connection.
- Charge the headset. A headset can power on while still failing to maintain a wireless connection.
- Restart both devices. Reboot the Xbox and headset, then remove and repeat the pairing process.
- Update firmware. Check the headset maker’s app and Xbox system updates, especially for older Xbox One accessories used with Series X|S.
- Check chat settings. Confirm that the microphone is not muted and that privacy and communication settings allow party or game chat.
- Test the controller jack. Try another known-working wired headset to determine whether the issue is the controller or the wireless headset.
Common symptoms and likely causes
- The headset powers on but produces no sound: wrong transmitter, PC-only dongle, unsupported USB audio device, or Bluetooth-only connection.
- Game audio works but the microphone does not: the connection may provide output only, or sound may be routed through a TV rather than Xbox.
- The headset works on PC but not Xbox: PC compatibility does not prove Xbox compatibility; check the Xbox transmitter and SKU.
- An older headset worked on Xbox One but not Series X|S: check firmware and whether it depended on optical audio.
- Audio has noticeable delay: Bluetooth or TV-based routing is more likely to introduce latency than Xbox Wireless or a purpose-built low-latency transmitter.
Which connection should you choose?
Choose wired 3.5 mm if reliability and price matter most
A wired headset through the controller is inexpensive, simple to troubleshoot, and does not need a battery. The trade-off is the cable and the need to remain within controller range.
Choose Xbox Wireless for the simplest wireless setup
A direct Xbox Wireless headset avoids a USB dongle and is designed around the console. Microsoft’s current Xbox Wireless Headset supports Xbox One and Series X|S, as well as Bluetooth-connected PCs and mobile devices through its separate Bluetooth function.
Choose an Xbox-compatible transmitter headset for multi-platform use
A headset with an Xbox-compatible transmitter can be a strong choice if you also use a PC or other devices. Check exactly which platforms the transmitter supports, whether Bluetooth can operate simultaneously, and whether the Xbox and non-Xbox versions are sold separately.
Use AirPods or other Bluetooth earbuds through a TV only when the compromises are acceptable
This can make use of headphones you already own, but expect possible delay and limited or absent Xbox chat. It is not the best choice for competitive play or regular party communication.

Microsoft’s US Xbox catalogue showed several relevant models when checked on August 16, 2026. These are price observations, not permanent prices, and regional availability and included accessories can change.
- Xbox Wireless Headset: a first-party direct Xbox Wireless option; the catalogue showed $119.99.
- Xbox Stereo Headset: a wired 3.5 mm option aimed at straightforward game audio and chat; the catalogue showed $64.99.
- SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 X Wireless: a mid-range Xbox-compatible wireless model; the catalogue showed $109.99.
- Turtle Beach Stealth 700: a headset family requiring careful generation and SKU checking; the catalogue showed $199.99.
- Razer BlackShark V2 X for Xbox: a lower-cost Xbox-specific listing; the catalogue showed $39.99. Confirm whether the selected version is wired or wireless.
- Premium examples: the catalogue also showed the Audeze Maxwell at $329.00, Corsair Virtuoso Max at $329.99, Razer BlackShark V2 Pro at $199.99, Turtle Beach Stealth Pro II at $349.99, and Arctis Nova Elite at $599.99.
These examples illustrate the range of Xbox-compatible products; they do not make every similarly named product compatible. Always open the exact manufacturer or Xbox product page before buying.
Bottom line
Wireless headphones are compatible with Xbox only when their connection method is supported. Buy an Xbox Wireless headset, an Xbox-specific transmitter headset, or use a 3.5 mm cable through a compatible controller. Bluetooth-only headphones and generic PC USB dongles are not reliable direct Xbox solutions, while TV Bluetooth is a workaround that may sacrifice latency and chat.
Before purchasing, verify the exact Xbox model, product edition, wireless method, game-audio support, microphone support, and included transmitter.
