- Note the complete model name, including any suffix or regional variation.
If the device is not listed, use its physical label or the name shown in Device Manager.
2. Check your Windows architecture

- Your installed Windows release.
- The correct driver or complete device software package.
Download the full Canon scanner/WIA package, not a standalone DLL. If Canon lists separate packages for Windows 10 and Windows 11, select the package matching your installation. If no package is listed for your Windows release, read the compatibility notes before installing an older driver.
5. Install the driver
- Disconnect or power off the scanner if Canon’s installer requests it.
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect or power on the scanner when instructed.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Windows Scan or Canon’s scanning application.
- Perform a test scan.
The repair worked if the application opens without the DLL error and the scanner completes a preview or scan. If the same message remains, continue with Device Manager rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the scanner in Device Manager
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Microsoft supports updating and reinstalling drivers through Device Manager. Use this step when Windows still shows the scanner but the driver is damaged or partially installed.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Look for the Canon scanner.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows displays an option to remove the driver package, select it only when you are reinstalling the driver from Canon.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s driver instructions are available through Device Manager support.
After the restart, install the Canon package again. If Windows redetects the scanner automatically, open Device Manager and confirm that the device has no warning icon.

If the scanner is not listed
In Device Manager:
- Select View.
- Select Show hidden devices.
- Check Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Select Action.
- Select Scan for hardware changes.
If the scanner remains absent, check its power, cable, USB port, network connection, and physical controls. A missing device in Device Manager is a detection problem, not proof that cnhw06a.dll alone is missing.
Fix 3: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
Time needed: 5 minutes
The Windows Image Acquisition service supports scanners and cameras. A stopped service can prevent scanning, although restarting it does not replace a missing Canon driver file.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if appropriate for your setup.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- If it is already running, select Restart.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Try Windows Scan again. If the service refuses to start, note the error and repair Windows components in the next step.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this fix when the problem began after a Windows update, disk cleanup, system crash, or other Windows component failure. It is also appropriate if Windows reports that a system file or dependency is damaged.
These commands do not normally reinstall a third-party Canon driver. They repair Windows components and protected Windows files, so complete the Canon driver reinstall first when the missing file clearly belongs to Canon.

Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
Run System File Checker second
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the scanner.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Its System File Checker guidance explains these commands and their results.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the scanner again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM and SFC once more after restarting. If the Canon DLL is still missing, return to Fix 1 because SFC is not a replacement for the Canon package.
Repeating repair commands without knowing whether Windows or the Canon package is damaged can waste time. Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a driver file, although no specific false-positive event for this DLL is established here. Check the quarantine history before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any event that names the Canon driver or the affected installation.
- Check the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from the genuine Canon installation and that the detection is not valid. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If you are unsure, do not restore the quarantined file. Remove or leave the detection in quarantine and reinstall the driver from Canon’s official support portal. That provides a cleaner provenance trail than restoring an isolated file.

Fix 6: Use Windows Update for compatible driver updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Windows Update may provide a compatible scanner driver or repair a Windows component, but it does not guarantee that it contains the best Canon package for every model.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install a Canon-related driver only when it matches your scanner.
- Restart Windows.
Test scanning after the restart. If the device still fails, install the complete package from Canon rather than relying on a generic Windows driver.
Fix 7: Try System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, cleanup operation, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the scanner stopped working.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal documents. Microsoft provides additional System Restore instructions.
After restoration, prevent the problem from returning by installing the correct Canon package rather than an older generic driver.

may produce an entry-point error and will not install the scanner driver, its INF file, dependencies, or device configuration. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Do not copy CNHW06A.DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- a game folder
- an application folder
- another scanner’s driver directory
A manually copied file can cause an architecture mismatch, bypass the driver installation process, or introduce malware. Random DLL download sites sites also cannot establish that the file came from Canon or that it matches the dependencies installed on your computer.

The file’s association with Windows 7-era DriverStore and WIA references does not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain it. Older scanners may have no supported driver for current Windows releases.
If the Canon scanner is discontinued
If Canon provides no driver for your installed Windows version:
- Confirm the model number carefully.
- Check Canon’s compatibility notes and available downloads.
- Try Windows Update and Device Manager only for officially offered compatible drivers.
- Avoid forcing an unrelated model’s driver.
- Test the scanner in a supported legacy Windows environment if one is available and appropriate.
- Consider replacement hardware if the manufacturer provides no compatible package.
A current operating system may run the scanner only through a compatible generic driver, or it may not support the legacy device at all. The filename cannot solve that compatibility limitation.
