Verdict: The Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gen 9 remains a powerful 16-inch gaming laptop, especially in its high-wattage RTX 4060 configuration. It offers strong plugged-in performance, effective cooling, a comfortable keyboard, useful ports, and excellent upgradeability. Its weak battery life, heavy chassis, mediocre standard display, and aging RTX 40-series hardware mean it is no longer an automatic recommendation in 2026.
Buy the RTX 4060 model when it is clearly cheaper than comparable Gen 10 laptops. Consider the RTX 4070 version only with 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, preferably the 500-nit display, and a substantial discount.
What configuration is this review about?
“Legion Pro 5i Gen 9” describes a platform rather than one fixed laptop. Lenovo sold it with Core i5-14500HX, Core i7-14650HX, Core i7-14700HX, or Core i9-14900HX processors; RTX 4050, RTX 4060, or RTX 4070 graphics; 16GB or 32GB of DDR5 memory; and 512GB or 1TB PCIe 4.0 storage. The chassis weighs approximately 2.5kg (5.5 pounds), uses an aluminum lid with a PC-ABS lower chassis, and contains an 80Wh battery. Lenovo’s official PSREF lists the complete platform specifications.
The main review configuration tested by Laptop Mag used a Core i9-14900HX, RTX 4070, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and the 165Hz display. Other reviewers tested RTX 4060 and Core i7 versions, so results and value conclusions vary by configuration.

Price and value in 2026
The Legion Pro 5i Gen 9 launched as a compelling midrange gaming laptop, but it is now an older RTX 40-series model. Lenovo’s current Gen 10 listings include Legion Pro 5i systems with RTX 5060, RTX 5070, and RTX 5070 Ti graphics, with observed RTX 5070 listings roughly between $1,975 and $2,405 depending on configuration and promotion. Check Lenovo’s current listings before buying.
That changes the buying rule:
- Excellent buy: RTX 4060, 16GB dual-channel or 32GB RAM, and 1TB storage at a clear discount against Gen 10 RTX 5060 systems.
- Good buy: RTX 4060 with the better 500-nit display, provided the total price remains well below newer alternatives.
- Conditional buy: RTX 4070 with 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, and the 500-nit panel at a meaningful discount.
- Poor buy: Any Gen 9 model priced close to a current-generation RTX 5070 laptop.
Do not judge the deal from the advertised laptop price alone. If a 16GB/512GB model needs memory and storage immediately, calculate the effective cost as laptop price + required RAM upgrade + required SSD upgrade.
Gaming performance
The Legion’s biggest strength is that its RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 options are configured at up to 140W. That power limit allows them to perform better than lower-wattage versions carrying the same GPU name. PC Gamer described its 140W RTX 4060 review unit as the fastest RTX 4060 laptop it had tested at the time, although that machine shipped with a single 16GB memory module and a 512GB SSD. Read that result as configuration- and test-pool-specific, not as a universal ranking.
The RTX 4060 is a strong match for 1080p and a sensible 1600p gaming GPU. DLSS and frame generation can improve performance in supported games. Its 8GB of VRAM is adequate for many games, but demanding new titles with maximum textures may require reduced settings at the display’s native 2560×1600 resolution.

The RTX 4070 is faster, and Lenovo also rates it at 140W, with a listed boost clock of 2,175MHz. However, it still has 8GB of VRAM. The performance improvement over the RTX 4060 is real but not large enough to justify a substantial premium when a newer RTX 5070 laptop is similarly priced. TechRadar found its RTX 4070 configuration exceptionally strong among RTX 4070 laptops and up to 7% faster than a previous Legion 5 Pro RTX 4070 in its testing, while also running more quietly than that predecessor.
For either GPU, dual-channel memory matters. Some 16GB retail models use one 16GB DIMM rather than two 8GB modules. That can reduce memory bandwidth and affect frame rates or minimum FPS in some games. Confirm the memory arrangement before ordering.
Display: check the panel, not just the model name
There are two materially different screens:

Laptop Mag measured its review unit at approximately 346 nits and 78% DCI-P3 coverage. That is acceptable for gaming, but the standard panel is not unusually bright or wide-gamut. The 500-nit DCI-P3 option is the one to seek for color-sensitive work or rooms with strong ambient light. Do not assume every Legion Pro 5i Gen 9 has it; verify the exact listing in Lenovo’s specification document.
Design, keyboard, and everyday use
The design is restrained rather than aggressively styled, making the laptop reasonably suitable for school or office use. The aluminum lid feels sturdier than the plastic lower chassis, while the large rear cooling shelf adds depth. At 5.5 pounds before the substantial power adapter, this is a transportable desktop replacement—not a comfortable daily commuter.

Lenovo’s TrueStrike keyboard is one of the laptop’s better features. Its 1.5mm key travel feels comfortable for gaming and typing, and some configurations include four-zone RGB lighting. The dedicated number pad is useful for productivity but makes the keyboard layout feel wider and slightly more crowded. Reviewers also praised the touchpad, build strength, and webcam privacy feature, though the exact shutter implementation can vary by configuration.
Ports and wireless connectivity
Connectivity is strong for a gaming laptop. Depending on the exact configuration, the platform includes USB-A, USB-C with DisplayPort, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, a 3.5mm audio jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2. Lenovo supports up to four independent displays, including the internal panel and three external monitors. HDMI and USB-C display outputs support up to 4K at 60Hz under the listed specifications.
The important omission is Thunderbolt 4. That may matter if you use a high-bandwidth Thunderbolt dock, storage enclosure, or specialized display setup. There is also no card reader.
Thermals and fan noise
The high-wattage graphics hardware is supported by capable cooling. TechRadar called its RTX 4070 model one of the best-performing RTX 4070 gaming laptops it had tested and found it quieter than the previous Legion 5 Pro in its comparison. Windows Central likewise found the thermal system capable during sustained workloads.

“Capable” does not mean silent. Performance modes in Lenovo Vantage can make the fans loud under extended gaming or CPU-heavy work. Noise, temperatures, and sustained performance vary with the processor, GPU, ambient temperature, power mode, and individual configuration. The practical trade-off is good plugged-in performance in a chassis that can become intrusive in a quiet room.
Battery life is the major weakness
The 80Wh battery is not enough to make this a long-running mobile workstation. Lenovo claims up to 5.2 hours in MobileMark 2018 and 7.1 hours of local 1080p video playback, plus rapid charging of approximately 0–40% in 10 minutes, 0–80% in 30 minutes, and 0–100% in 60 minutes under its stated conditions.
Independent results were less favorable. Laptop Mag recorded 3 hours and 43 minutes on its Core i9/RTX 4070/32GB configuration. Tom’s Hardware called battery life short, TechRadar found it disappointing, and Windows Central effectively recommended staying near the charger. Gaming on battery is not a realistic use case, and productivity endurance is below thin-and-light standards. Results vary with brightness, refresh rate, Optimus mode, processor, and Lenovo Vantage power settings.

Upgradeability helps offset the basic configurations. Lenovo lists two DDR5-5600 SODIMM slots and two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD slots, allowing up to two internal SSDs. That makes it possible to start with a discounted configuration and expand later.

Before buying, check:
- Whether 16GB means one 16GB module or two 8GB modules.
- Whether the SSD is 512GB or 1TB.
- Whether the second M.2 slot is empty or populated.
- Whether your region’s warranty terms permit the planned upgrade.
- Which display is installed.
Adding a second memory module requires removing the bottom cover and internal shield, so it is straightforward but not entirely tool-free. A 512GB drive can fill quickly after Windows, applications, and several large games; budget for a 1TB or 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD if necessary.
Is it good for creators and students?
Yes, with qualifications. HX-series Intel processors and the discrete GPU provide substantial multicore and graphics performance for video editing, 3D rendering, software development, virtual machines, photo work, and heavy multitasking. A Core i7 or i9 model with 32GB of RAM is particularly suitable for these workloads.
The standard 300-nit sRGB screen is less appropriate for color-critical work than the 500-nit DCI-P3 panel. The large power adapter, 5.5-pound chassis, fan noise, and weak battery life also make it a poor choice for students or creators who work away from outlets all day. It is best viewed as a powerful desk-based machine that can be moved when necessary.
How it compares with newer Legion models
The principal alternative is the Legion Pro 5i Gen 10. Lenovo’s current listings include RTX 5060, RTX 5070, and RTX 5070 Ti configurations. A Gen 9 RTX 4060 can still make sense when its discount is large, especially if it includes dual-channel memory and a 1TB SSD. A Gen 9 RTX 4070 needs a stronger discount because the newer generation narrows its value advantage.

The Legion Pro 7i is a higher-cost option for buyers who need substantially more graphics performance and VRAM; it is not a direct budget competitor.
Who should buy the Legion Pro 5i Gen 9?
- Buy it for: strong plugged-in gaming, a comfortable keyboard, extensive ports, effective cooling, and easy RAM or SSD expansion.
- Choose RTX 4060: when discounted and paired with dual-channel RAM or enough savings for an upgrade.
- Choose RTX 4070: only when the price is close to RTX 4060 alternatives and the machine includes 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, and preferably the 500-nit display.
- Choose the premium display: for wide-gamut creative work, HDR content, or bright rooms.
- Skip it: if you need all-day battery life, low weight, Thunderbolt 4, premium all-metal construction, or a price close to a newer Gen 10 RTX 5070 laptop.
The Bottom Line
The Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gen 9 is still an impressive gaming laptop when bought as discounted or clearance stock. The RTX 4060 model is the safer value pick; the RTX 4070 model is worthwhile only with the right screen, memory, storage, and price. Verify the exact SKU before purchasing, because the display, RAM arrangement, SSD, and GPU can change the experience substantially.
