srmstormod.dll is a Microsoft Windows file-services component, not a general-purpose application runtime. If Windows says srmstormod.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or reinstall the File Server Resource Manager or RSAT feature rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which executable shows the message: a Windows administration tool, a server-management utility, or an unrelated desktop program
- When it happens: at startup, after Windows Update, after removing a Windows feature, or after antivirus activity
- Whether the computer is Windows Server or Windows 10/11
- Whether the system is 64-bit or 32-bit
- Whether the computer actually uses File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) or RSAT File Services Tools
The file is associated with Microsoft File Server Resource Management Office Parser and is also reported under the original filename FsrmStorMod.dll. Microsoft update inventories include the component in Windows Server and RSAT-related packages, with both x86 and x64 variants.Microsoft Windows file inventory
A normal consumer application should not ordinarily depend on it. If an unrelated program reports the error, first identify the executable in the error message and check whether Windows components, an administrative tool, or security software recently changed the system.
Fix 1: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file was corrupted, removed by servicing, damaged by an interrupted update, or quarantined after a false positive.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses to restore protected system files. It does not simply copy a random DLL into a system folder.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and repeat the action that produced the error.
A successful result normally says that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it found no integrity violations. If the same program now opens, the repair worked.
The Microsoft-recommended order is DISM first, then SFC. Running SFC repeatedly without repairing a damaged component store may not restore the file.
If you prefer help identifying damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly comparing servicing output and logs by hand, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the supported repair path.
If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found:
- Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and build.
- Note its drive letter, such as
D:. - Run a command using a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct path to the matching Windows image. An incompatible source can leave the repair incomplete, so do not use a random folder copied from another computer.

Fix 2: Reinstall File Server Resource Manager on Windows Server
On Windows Server, srmstormod.dll is associated with the FSRM role service. FSRM supports quotas, file screening, and storage reports. The feature is identified by the role-service name FS-Resource-Manager.Microsoft Windows Server roles and features
Install FSRM with PowerShell
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name FS-Resource-Manager
- Restart the server if Windows requests it.
- Reopen the affected administration tool or service.
You can also use Server Manager:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage and then Add Roles and Features.
- Continue through the wizard using the current server selection.
- Expand File and Storage Services.
- Select the FSRM role service under File and iSCSI Services.
- Complete the wizard and restart if prompted.
If the installation completes successfully and the original application now starts, the missing component was probably part of the removed or incomplete FSRM installation.
If the server cannot obtain the feature payload
When the server cannot download the required files, use matching Windows Server installation media. Microsoft documents this form:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:FS-Resource-Manager /All /Source:D:sourcessxs /LimitAccess
Replace D: with the installation media drive. The media must match the server’s edition and build closely enough for Windows servicing to accept it.Microsoft FSRM troubleshooting guidance

If FSRM installs but its service still fails, investigate the role configuration, permissions, quota settings, and Event Viewer entries. Replacing only the DLL will not repair a broken FSRM configuration.
Fix 3: Reinstall RSAT File Services Tools on Windows 10 or 11
A Windows client may need srmstormod.dll because it has the Remote Server Administration Tools component for file services installed. Microsoft identifies the capability as:
Rsat.FileServices.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Check whether the capability is installed
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*'
Look for Rsat.FileServices.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0 and check its State.

Restart Windows if requested, then launch the administration tool again.
You can also use the graphical interface:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features or Add an optional feature.
- Search for the RSAT file-services tools.
- Select the matching feature and choose Next, then Install.

If installation fails, Windows may need access to Windows Update or a matching Features on Demand source. The package is a Windows component, not a standalone DLL intended to be copied into an application folder.Microsoft Features on Demand catalogue
Fix 4: Check Windows Update and recent feature changes
A failed update, interrupted restart, or incomplete feature removal can leave a Windows component unavailable.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart the computer even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run DISM and SFC again in the order shown above.
If the error began immediately after an update, open Update history and record the relevant update. If an appropriate restore point exists, System Restore may be suitable, particularly on a workstation where the error started after a recent servicing change. It is not a substitute for reinstalling a missing RSAT or FSRM feature.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a server, test the repair during a maintenance window and back up important data before deeper servicing work. If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, an in-place Windows repair or a planned Windows Server repair may be more appropriate than repeated DLL replacement.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate Windows file, but the filename alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
Microsoft inventories list both x86 and x64 versions of this component. On 64-bit Windows, related files may appear under:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite the names, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Do not swap files between those folders.
A 32-bit executable loads 32-bit dependencies, and a 64-bit executable loads 64-bit dependencies. A file from the wrong architecture can produce errors such as “not designed to run on Windows” even when the filename is correct. Do not treat repository-listed versions or sizes as universal current values, and do not copy a file from a different Windows build.

regsvr32 registers certain DLLs that expose the required registration entry points. It is not a generic repair command for every Windows DLL.
For this component, Microsoft’s supported repair route is Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, and installation of the FSRM or RSAT feature. The presence of exported functions does not establish that manually registering the file is necessary. Running a command such as this without knowing the component’s registration requirements can create a second error:

Do not download or copy the DLL from a random website
Avoid DLL download sites repositories and files copied from another computer. An isolated download can contain:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- Malware
- A file that satisfies the message but leaves the component store inconsistent
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM using matching installation media, the official FSRM feature, and Microsoft’s RSAT File Services Tools package. If an application genuinely bundles its own copy, reinstall that application only from its official publisher installer, but do not assume that applies to this Windows component.
If the error remains after repair
Work through these checks:
- Write down the exact executable named in the error.
- Confirm whether it is a Windows administration tool, an FSRM-related service, or an unrelated application.
- Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Applications and Services Logs for the failure time.
- Review Windows servicing logs if DISM or SFC reports errors.
- Confirm that the executable and the installed component use compatible 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Check whether antivirus software deletes the file again.
- Inspect disk health if SFC repeatedly fails or repaired files disappear.
- Back up important data before using deeper repair options.
chkdsk /f C: can investigate filesystem errors, but it is not the first response to an isolated missing DLL and may require a restart. If the FSRM service itself fails, troubleshoot its role, permissions, configuration, and event logs rather than focusing only on srmstormod.dll.

This file is a Windows file-services component, not a hardware driver. Device Manager is therefore not the normal place to repair it. Use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for legitimate driver updates only when the same incident also involves a hardware or storage-driver problem.
If you are manually checking many device vendors and versions while investigating a broader system problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows findings, while driver installation features are handled by the full version. Updating a driver does not replace the required DISM, SFC, FSRM, or RSAT repair.
FAQ
Is srmstormod.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft File Server Resource Manager and has the reported original filename FsrmStorMod.dll. Verify the actual path and Microsoft digital signature because a legitimate filename can still be copied or impersonated by malware.
Is it a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET assembly?
No. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the supported first fix for this error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain it?
No. It is associated especially with Windows Server FSRM and client RSAT file-services components. A standard desktop installation may not have it.
Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Let Windows servicing or the relevant feature installation place the correct architecture and build. Manual placement can make loader and servicing problems worse.
Why does an unrelated program mention this file?
The program may be calling a Windows administration component incorrectly, the Windows installation may be damaged, or the application package may be incomplete. Identify the executable and repair its official installation after checking Windows components.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If DISM cannot find source files, provide matching installation media. Persistent failures point to component-store, storage, security-software, or broader Windows servicing problems rather than a need for another downloaded DLL.
