acp.dll is a third-party application file, not a Windows system component. It is most strongly associated with Autostart Control Panel, a RegHunter component from Enigma Software Group USA, LLC, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the application that owns your copy.
Do not download a replacement acp.dll from a random DLL website. The filename is not unique: older Presto. ImageFolio installations also used an acp.dll. The file path, owning program, digital signature, and exact error are more useful than the filename alone.
1. Identify the program that needs acp.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Before changing Windows files, find the application that displays the error.
- Read the complete error dialog and note the name of the program that fails.
- Search Windows for
acp.dll: - Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC in the left pane.
- Enter
acp.dllin the search box. - Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect:
- General for the location and file size.
- Details for the description and publisher.
- Digital Signatures for the signer.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for the application whose folder contains the file.
- If you use the older Control Panel interface, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and look for the same program.
A normal application-owned path resembles:
C:Program FilesEnigma Software GroupRegHunter
That path is associated with RegHunter installations. A path inside an ImageFolio folder may indicate the older NewSoft program instead.

Treat these locations cautiously:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:Users<name>Downloads%TEMP%- An unfamiliar folder with no installed application
A file in System32 is not automatically a Windows file. Check its signature and owner before restoring or replacing it. Conversely, an unsigned file in a temporary or download folder should not be trusted merely because its name is acp.dll.
2. Repair or reinstall the owning application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution when the error appeared after an uninstall, update, cleanup, failed installation, or moving an application folder.
If the program is RegHunter
- Close the error dialog.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for RegHunter.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall if you no longer want the program.
- If you still need it, first check whether the entry offers Repair or Modify.
- If no repair option is available, uninstall the damaged installation.
- Obtain the current installer through Enigma Software Group’s official RegHunter support or product pages.
- Run the installer, accept the prompts, and let it restore the application files.
- Restart Windows and open the program again.
If RegHunter was removed but a startup entry still tries to load acp.dll, reinstalling it can restore the missing component. Afterward, either keep the repaired program or uninstall it normally so its startup entries are removed.
If the owner is another application
Use the same process with that application’s own installer. Prefer the publisher’s support page, the original licensed installer, or your organization’s software portal. Do not copy acp.dll from another computer, because the other copy may have a different architecture, version, dependency set, or digital signature.
A repair succeeded when the original application starts without the acp.dll message. If the error changes to a different missing file, the application may have several damaged dependencies. Continue using its installer rather than collecting individual DLLs.
3. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after a detection, cleanup, or reputation change.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning
acp.dllor the application that owns it. - Expand the event and record the original file path and detection name.
- Verify that the path belongs to the installed application.
- Check the file’s Digital Signatures tab if the file is still available.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original path, publisher, signature, and installation source are verified. If the file was unsigned, came from a temporary directory, or was detected outside the application’s folder, leave it quarantined and investigate the application instead.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after a clean reinstall, do not immediately create an exclusion. Contact the application publisher or remove the program if you do not need it.
4. Check the application architecture and dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that acp.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of the DLL’s dependencies.
Also, a 32-bit program needs compatible 32-bit components, while a 64-bit program needs compatible 64-bit components. Installing or copying a DLL with the wrong architecture can produce an error saying that the file is invalid or “not designed to run on Windows.”
Use the application’s installer to correct this:
- Identify whether the failing program is installed under Program Files or Program Files (x86).
- Check whether the publisher provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers.
- Install the version intended for that program and your Windows installation.
- Apply the program’s available updates.
- Restart Windows and test it again.
Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is responsible. Install or repair one of those runtimes only when the application’s own error identifies it as a missing dependency. acp.dll is not verified as a Windows runtime file.
If the error mentions a driver
A normal acp.dll repair does not require Device Manager. If the failing application also identifies a hardware or driver component:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the message under the General tab.
- Use Driver > Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through many driver versions: its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns acp.dll remains the definitive fix for an application-specific DLL.
5. Repair broader Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Because acp.dll is normally supplied by an application, SFC and DISM are not the primary repair. Use them when several Windows programs are failing, Windows reports damaged components, or the application reinstall did not resolve wider system problems.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window during the scan.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows files. They are not guaranteed to restore a third-party acp.dll; if the same application error remains, return to the owning program’s installer.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process less repetitive by scanning for issues and showing what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and the application’s official reinstall remains the correct fix when acp.dll belongs to that program.
6. Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
Time needed: 1 minute
Avoid running:
regsvr32 acp.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that this acp.dll is an ActiveX or COM component that requires registration.

The command may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That does not mean Windows needs another copy of the file. It means registration is not the applicable repair. Reinstall the owning application instead.

Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use System Restore only when a suitable restore point predates the failure and repairing the application has failed.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failed update, cleanup, or uninstall.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can change recently installed applications and drivers. It does not replace the need to verify the file’s ownership, and it may not restore an application that was deliberately removed.
What causes acp.dll errors?
| Likely cause | What normally fixes it |
|---|---|
| The parent application was damaged or partially removed | Repair or reinstall that application |
| An update failed | Reinstall the application and apply its updates |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Verify its provenance before restoring, or reinstall the application |
| A dependency is missing | Reinstall the application and its documented prerequisites |
| Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit component | Use the application’s compatible official installer |
| Malware or tampering | Run a full scan and quarantine suspicious files |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A leftover startup entry remains | Remove the parent application cleanly or repair it first |
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe, malicious, current, or owned by RegHunter.
What each common error means
“The program cannot start because acp.dll is missing”
The file is absent from the application folder, or the application cannot access it. Reinstall the program that displays the message.
“The specified module could not be found”
acp.dll may be missing, but a dependency may also be missing. Reinstall the parent program before installing unrelated runtimes.
“There was a problem starting acp.dll”
Check the file path, signature, architecture, and antivirus history. A damaged or incompatible file can trigger this message even when the file exists.

FAQ
Is acp.dll part of Windows?
No verified Microsoft ownership has been established. It is primarily associated with third-party software and normally belongs in the folder of the application that installed it.
Does every acp.dll belong to RegHunter?
No. RegHunter is the strongest known association, but an older Presto. ImageFolio installation also used the same filename. Always identify the path and owning executable.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not for this filename alone. Install or repair a runtime only if the specific application identifies that runtime as the missing dependency.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I copy acp.dll into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Copying it into a Windows system folder can create version conflicts and security risk. Restore the complete application through its official installer.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
Check whether the file is in the correct application folder, inspect its digital signature, verify the application’s architecture, and reinstall the parent program. If the problem continues, record the full error, failing executable path, acp.dll path, Windows version, and relevant Event Viewer entries.
When should I remove the parent application?
Uninstall it when you no longer use it, when its publisher cannot verify the file, when antivirus repeatedly detects it, or when its leftover startup component continues generating errors. Remove the complete program rather than deleting acp.dll alone.
