A copy under a path resembling C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository is part of a managed driver package. It should not be copied to another folder or replaced manually.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged cnbp_287.dll.
- Find the exact printer model from the label on the printer or from Settings.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer and choose Remove.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software, including the printer driver, MP Drivers, or model-specific utilities.
- Uninstall the relevant Canon package. If the printer has several Canon utilities, remove the complete package rather than only one utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Canon’s official Support download page in your browser.
- Select the exact printer model, then choose the installed Windows version and architecture.
- Download the current printer driver or MP Drivers package supplied for that model.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer prompts. Disconnect the USB cable if the installer requests it, and reconnect the printer only when instructed.
- Print a test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Canon printer → Printer properties → Print Test Page.
A Canon MP Drivers package contains printer and related device drivers. That is why reinstalling the package is more reliable than attempting to restore one DLL.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if the installer completes without the missing-file message, the printer appears under Printers & scanners, and a test page prints. Check Device Manager as well:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues and Printers.
- Look for the Canon device without a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message on the General tab.
If the error returns immediately, repeat the uninstall after disconnecting the printer, restart, and run the current model-specific installer again. Do not copy a DLL from another Canon printer or from another Windows installation.

To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Locate System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Return to Canon Support and select the matching operating system and architecture where those choices are offered.
A 32-bit DLL cannot be casually substituted for a 64-bit driver component, and copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory is not a repair. On 64-bit Windows, System32 does not automatically mean that every file used by every application is a 64-bit component.
If Canon lists more than one driver, choose the package for the exact printer model and connection type. Do not install a driver for a similar-looking model merely because its name is close.

A damaged or partially removed Canon package can leave Windows pointing to files that no longer exist.
First, list installed third-party driver packages:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Review the output for Canon entries and note the published name, usually formatted like
oem##.inf.
Do not delete anything directly from:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
If you have identified the correct Canon-published INF and need to remove the damaged package, run the following command with the actual published name:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf with the name shown by pnputil. Never guess the name. Removing the wrong package can disable another device.

Restart Windows and reinstall the exact Canon driver from the manufacturer. PnPUtil manages the package and its INF records; manually removing the DLL does not.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a driver file during installation or afterward. A matching filename is not proof that a file is safe, so do not create a broad antivirus exclusion.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Canon installer or printer driver.
- Open the relevant event and inspect its path and source.
- Run a current security scan.
Restore or allow the file only when it came from a trusted Canon installation, the file is digitally signed by Canon or restored by Canon’s official installer, and the security detection has been independently established as a false positive.
The safer option is normally to download the driver again from Canon and reinstall it. If the same file is repeatedly quarantined, stop restoring it and submit the installer or detection to the security vendor for analysis.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
cnbp_287.dll is primarily a printer-driver file, so Windows component repair is a secondary step. Use it when the Canon reinstall fails, Windows has other missing-file errors, or system files appear damaged.

Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon driver if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful SFC scan means Windows repaired or verified protected system files, but it does not necessarily recreate a Canon driver package.

Fix 6: Use Device Manager to refresh the printer
Device Manager can remove a stale device entry, but it should not replace the manufacturer’s complete installer.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues, Printers, and, if necessary, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected Canon device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are certain the package belongs to the affected Canon printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon driver installer again.
- Add the printer from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
If Windows reinstalls a generic printer but the Canon utility still reports cnbp_287.dll, remove the generic device and run the full Canon package again.

Does regsvr32 fix cnbp_287.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. Printer-driver files are normally installed and registered through their signed driver package and INF metadata.
Running this command:
regsvr32 cnbp_287.dll
may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.” It does not rebuild a missing Canon driver package, restore dependencies, or repair Driver Store records.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL is a self-registering component and gives the correct path. That is not the normal repair path for cnbp_287.dll.
What not to do
- Do not download
cnbp_287.dllfrom a random DLL download site. - Do not copy the file into
System32,SysWOW64, an application folder, or the Driver Store. - Do not install a DLL from a different Canon printer or Windows architecture.
- Do not run registry cleaners or DLL download sites utilities as the primary repair.

Should I download the DLL separately?
No. A standalone download can have the wrong version, architecture, provenance, or dependencies, and it does not recreate the driver’s INF and Driver Store registration. Use the complete Canon driver package.
What if the message appears while opening a non-Canon program?
Check the full path in the error and the program named in the message. If the path points to a Canon utility or printer package, repair Canon software. If it points elsewhere, investigate that application before replacing anything.
What if reinstalling Canon’s driver does not work?
Record the printer model, Windows version, exact error text, full DLL path, and the result of pnputil /enum-drivers. Is System Restore appropriate?
