Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches your situation:
- You use Lao input, or recently removed or changed language settings: Re-add the Lao language and keyboard first.
- The Lao feature is installed but Windows still reports the file missing: Run DISM and System File Checker in that order.
- The error started after Windows Update or a language-pack installation: Install pending updates, restart, then remove and re-add Lao.
- Your security software quarantined the file: Check quarantine and verify the file before restoring it.
- The error appears only in one Windows account: Rebuild that account’s keyboard settings or test another profile.
- The file exists outside a Windows system directory or has an invalid signature: Treat it as suspicious and scan the system.
- A game or unrelated application displays the message: Inspect the full path in the error.
kbdlao.dllis not a game runtime, Visual C++ file, DirectX component, or ordinary application dependency.
The exact cause cannot be determined from the filename alone. The error path, recent Windows changes, installed languages, and whether the file is signed provide better evidence.
What kbdlao.dll does
kbdlao.dll is the Windows keyboard-layout module for Lao input. Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its input system when the corresponding locale and keyboard are selected. The files contain tables that translate keyboard scan codes into virtual keys and characters. Microsoft describes this keyboard-layout design in its keyboard-layout documentation.

It normally belongs in a Windows system directory:

Not every Windows installation needs the file. It is relevant when Lao language or keyboard support is installed and configured. Removing Lao support can also remove the file or stop Windows from using it.
Fix 1: Re-add the Lao language and keyboard
This is the best first repair when the component is missing or its language registration is damaged.
On Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for Lao.
- Select Lao and choose Next.
- Install the language feature. Keep the keyboard option selected.
- After installation, select the three-dot menu beside Lao.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, confirm that the Lao keyboard is present.
- Restart Windows.
- Press Windows key + Space and select the Lao layout.
On Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Choose Language.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for and select Lao.
- Complete the installation.
- Select Lao, choose Options, and check the Keyboards section.
- Add the Lao keyboard if it is not listed.
- Restart the computer.
- Press Windows key + Space to switch layouts.
The wording can vary slightly between Windows builds. If Lao installs successfully and the keyboard works after restarting, the missing-file problem is resolved. If Windows refuses to install the feature or the same error returns, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Windows protects keyboard-layout files as system components. Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management, followed by System File Checker, instead of copying a DLL from another computer.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Lao keyboard with Windows key + Space.
DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies protected components. SFC checks protected system files and can replace a missing or corrupted copy. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows image repair guidance and System File Checker instructions.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it says some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Persistent failures may require Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation.

Fix 3: Install updates, then rebuild Lao support
An incomplete Windows update or language-feature installation can leave the layout registration and system files out of sync.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update on Windows 11, or Update & Security → Windows Update on Windows 10.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Language & region or Language settings.
- Open Lao’s language options.
- Remove the Lao keyboard or Lao language feature.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Add Lao again using Add a language.
- Test the layout.
If Windows Update itself reports errors, follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. Do not manually substitute a file from a different Windows release. Version and architecture compatibility matter for protected system components.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, although malware or tampering is also possible.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
kbdlao.dll. - Check the reported path and detection details.
- Restore the file only when the path is a normal Windows system directory and your security product identifies it as a Microsoft system file.
- Update security definitions.
- Run a Full scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to copy a DLL into System32. If the file is outside a Windows directory, has an invalid Microsoft signature, or is detected repeatedly, leave it quarantined and run Microsoft Defender Offline or your organization’s approved security scan.

Fix 5: Remove a stale keyboard entry
A startup error can come from an obsolete Lao keyboard reference even when you no longer use Lao.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language → Language & region on Windows 11, or Time & Language → Language on Windows 10.
- Review the installed languages and keyboards.
- Open Lao’s options if it is listed.
- Remove obsolete Lao keyboards.
- If Lao is no longer needed, remove the Lao language entry.
- Restart Windows.
If the error occurs only under one account, sign in with another local or administrative profile and test it. A profile-specific problem points to language configuration rather than a system-wide missing file. Re-adding the language in the affected profile is safer than replacing the DLL.
Fix 6: Check the disk if repairs do not persist
File-system damage can cause a repaired component to become corrupted again.
- Save your work.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk C: /scan
- Let the scan finish.
- Follow any recommendation to schedule a deeper check after backing up important files.
- Run the computer manufacturer’s storage diagnostic if errors are reported.
Repeated corruption, slow file access, or other damaged Windows files may indicate a storage problem. Repair the underlying disk issue before attempting repeated system-file repairs.
Are drivers or Device Manager relevant?
Usually, no. kbdlao.dll is a keyboard-layout component, not a conventional keyboard hardware driver. Updating a physical keyboard driver in Device Manager will not normally restore this file.

If the keyboard hardware itself is not working, you can still check it separately:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the physical keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not remove the keyboard device merely because the kbdlao.dll message appears. When tracking several outdated device drivers manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show identified driver issues; driver installation through its full version is optional and is not a substitute for restoring the Lao language component.
Why you should not download or register the DLL
Avoid DLL download sites websites and random ZIP archives. A replacement may have the wrong Windows version, architecture, signature, or a malicious payload. Copying it into System32 can also interfere with Windows servicing and leave the real language-component problem unresolved.
regsvr32 is not a routine fix for kbdlao.dll. Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by Windows as layout modules and are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries. Registering the file is not part of Microsoft’s documented repair process and can produce another error without restoring Lao input.

If you find the file in an application directory, temporary folder, or an unusual user folder, do not assume it is legitimate. Check its full path, digital signature, and security-product results before taking action.
If nothing above works
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component:
- Back up important files.
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Try Windows recovery options or System Restore.
- Consider an in-place repair installation that preserves personal files and applications.
- Contact Microsoft Support or your organization’s administrator if the machine is managed.
Do not jump directly to a clean installation unless repair options have been evaluated. If only one application reports the message, inspect the complete error path first. The application may contain a stale reference to a Windows layout file, or the dialog may name another DLL elsewhere in the message.

FAQ
Does every Windows computer need kbdlao.dll?
No. It is used for the Lao Standard Keyboard Layout. A system without Lao language or keyboard support may not contain or use it.
Is kbdlao.dll a virus?
The filename itself does not establish whether a file is malicious. A genuine copy should be associated with Microsoft Windows, stored in a Windows system directory, and carry a valid Microsoft signature. An unsigned copy in a random folder deserves investigation.
Can I copy kbdlao.dll from another computer?
Do not do this routinely. Windows releases, system architectures, servicing states, and language components differ. Reinstall Lao support or repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for the Windows keyboard-layout component described here. There is no reliable basis for treating kbdlao.dll as a runtime dependency for those packages.
Why does a game mention kbdlao.dll?
Check the full path and complete error text. The game may be incorrectly referencing a Windows keyboard-layout file, or the dialog may identify a different component. Reinstalling a game should not be the first step until the path is confirmed.
How do I switch back to Lao input?
Press Windows key + Space, then select the Lao keyboard. If Lao is absent, add it again under Windows language settings.
