Start with this diagnostic checklist
foximager.dll is missing, Windows cannot load it, or an older DVD/video program crashes when it starts. The file is not a normal Windows component, so the correct repair usually belongs to the application that installed it.
Before changing anything, write down:
- Which program shows the error: Look for the executable name in the message or title bar.
- When it happens: Record whether it occurs at startup, while creating a DVD, after an update, or after removing another program.
- Where the program is installed: Check its own folder under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). - Your Windows architecture: Open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Whether security software removed the file: Check Windows Security Protection History.
Do not download foximager.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. A replacement may contain malware, belong to another application version, use the wrong architecture, or fail because a different dependency is missing.
What is foximager.dll?
foximager.dll is a legacy third-party application DLL, not a standard Windows DLL and not a Microsoft system runtime. Available installation records most strongly associate a file named FoxImager.dll with Video DVD Maker, an older DVD-authoring application. A historical user report also mentions an access violation in `Foximager.dll while using FinalBurner, but that does not prove that every copy belongs to FinalBurner.
The safest ownership rule is simple: the program named in the error and the folder containing the DLL matter more than the filename alone. If the file is required by Video DVD Maker, FinalBurner, or another old DVD/video program, restore that application’s complete installation rather than repairing Windows folders.

Public archive listings describe the file as a 32-bit Windows DLL, but available metadata is inconsistent and is not an authoritative specification. Use the architecture and files supplied by the original application installer.
Common foximager.dll errors
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because foximager.dll was not found.”
- “The file foximager.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: foximager.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading foximager.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because foximager.dll is missing from your computer.”
These messages do not always mean the DLL itself has disappeared. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that foximager.dll is present but one of its dependent libraries is missing.
An access violation is different from a straightforward missing-file error. It can result from an application bug, incompatible old software, a damaged DLL, a missing dependency, damaged media, a codec problem, or an issue with the DVD drive.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely fix and the safest place to begin.
Identify the application
- Read the entire error dialog and note the executable name, if one appears.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the named DVD or video application.
- If you use the classic Control Panel, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Locate the application and check its installation location if Windows provides one.
- Open that folder in File Explorer and look for
foximager.dll.
If the file is in the application’s own directory, leave it there. Application-private DLLs normally should not be moved to a Windows system folder.
Try Windows’ repair option
Some desktop applications expose a repair control:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every traditional desktop program offers Advanced options or Repair. If the option is missing or does not help, continue with a full reinstall.

Reinstall from the original source
- Back up any project files or custom settings used by the DVD/video program.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or obtain the installer from the legitimate publisher or a trustworthy distribution source.
- Install the same application edition and architecture that your projects require.
- Start the program before adding plugins, codecs, or compatibility changes.
- Test the operation that originally produced the error.
If the program starts normally and reaches its main window without the DLL message, the repair worked. If the installer itself reports a missing runtime or dependency, record that exact message before installing anything else.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL. Do not immediately disable protection or whitelist an unknown copy.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and look for the application’s installation folder or
foximager.dll. - Confirm that the program came from a legitimate installer.
- Run another scan of the installer and application folder.
- If the file is confirmed as legitimate, use the available Restore action.
- Start the application and test it.

Reinstalling the application is preferable to extracting a quarantined DLL manually because it restores the complete set of files and dependencies. If Windows Security or another scanner continues to identify the file, do not allow it merely because the filename matches. Remove suspicious software and investigate the installer.
Fix 3: Check the application architecture and legacy runtimes
A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 version of a runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing only an x64 package will not necessarily satisfy a 32-bit DVD program.

The reported Video DVD Maker file list includes older libraries such as MFC71.dll and msvcr71.dll. That suggests the application may depend on an old Microsoft runtime, but it does not mean Microsoft created or supplies foximager.dll.
Use this process:
- Read the application’s installer documentation or error dialog.
- Determine whether it explicitly requests a Microsoft runtime.
- Install the runtime from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose x86 for a 32-bit application and x64 only when the application requires it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the DVD/video program again.
Do not assume that the newest runtime replaces every older runtime. Legacy applications may need an older package supplied by their original installer, and multiple runtime generations can remain installed side by side. Reinstalling Visual C++ will not recreate foximager.dll if the parent application removed it.
Fix 4: Run the application with appropriate compatibility settings
Old DVD-authoring software may fail on current Windows even after its files are restored.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program needs it and you trust the installation.
- Use Run compatibility troubleshooter, or select a suitable older Windows compatibility mode.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program and test it.
If the program still crashes with an access violation, the problem may be an incompatibility or application bug rather than a missing DLL. Check whether the failure occurs only with a particular video file, disc, codec, or DVD drive.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall related drivers
A missing application DLL is not normally repaired by a driver update, but an old DVD/video application can also fail because of graphics, storage, or optical-drive problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Expand Storage controllers if the error involves disc access.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a device that recently began failing:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the problem began after an update.
- Otherwise choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and allow Windows to detect it again.
- Install the driver supplied by the computer or hardware manufacturer when Windows does not find a suitable driver.
Manually checking graphics, chipset, storage, and optical-drive driver versions can take time and can lead to the wrong package. It is optional, and reinstalling the DVD application remains the definitive fix when that program owns foximager.dll.
Do not use Device Manager to replace the DLL itself. Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not ordinary application libraries.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are useful for damaged Windows components. They generally will not restore a third-party foximager.dll, so do not use them as the primary repair for this file.

Run DISM first:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
A message that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired corrupted files indicates that Windows components were repaired. It does not confirm that foximager.dll was restored. If the application still reports the same error, return to the parent application’s repair or reinstall.

Do not register foximager.dll blindly
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 foximager.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points, commonly ActiveX or COM components. There is no reliable evidence that foximager.dll is such a component. An ordinary private application library usually does not need registration.

Consider System Restore after a recent system change
If the error started immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or application change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.

- Open Start and search for Recovery.
- Select Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
- Test the application.
System Restore does not target personal documents, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s recovery options explain the available choices.
What not to do
- Do not download a similarly named DLL from an unverified archive.
- Do not copy a 32-bit file into
C:WindowsSystem32just because Windows is 64-bit. - Do not replace the file with one from another application.
- Do not treat an archive’s version, size, or checksum as proof of compatibility.
- Do not whitelist a file that security software identifies without checking its origin.
- Do not install a current x64 Visual C++ package and assume every legacy dependency is covered.
- Do not use SFC as a way to restore an application-owned file.
Manual copying is reasonable only when the source is the same verified installer, a known-good backup, or another installation of the identical application version.
FAQ
Is foximager.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence supports that. It is associated with legacy third-party DVD and video software, not the normal Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component set.
Which program installed foximager.dll?
The strongest public association is Video DVD Maker. A historical report also mentions FinalBurner, but that is not confirmation that every FinalBurner installation or every copy of the DLL is the same.
Is foximager.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
