GTA 5 Enhanced Edition Differences: Is It Worth Buying Again?

Short answer: if you already own GTA 5 on PC, you do not need to buy it again. GTAV Enhanced launched on PC as a free upgrade, and a new PC purchase includes both Enhanced and Legacy. Enhanced is the better version for capable PCs and active GTA Online players, but it is a separate installation with separate multiplayer environments, higher system requirements and one-time migration rules.

This comparison covers the PC versions as of September 2026, including the current Title Update 1.73 branch.

GTA 5 Enhanced vs. Legacy: the key differences

Enhanced is therefore not a new edition with a new campaign. It is a technical upgrade to GTAV and GTA Online’s current-generation branch, with additional online systems and content.

Is GTA 5 Enhanced a new game?

No. Enhanced contains the same core GTAV Story Mode campaign rather than a new story, characters or campaign expansion. Rockstar’s documented feature list focuses on improved graphics, loading, audio, progression systems and GTA Online content.

Story Mode saves can be migrated from Legacy to Enhanced, but the two installations do not share ongoing progress. Rockstar has also issued Enhanced-specific fixes for issues involving high frame rates, ray tracing, stretched textures, audio and crashes, so the newer build can change technical behavior even when the underlying campaign is the same.

One commonly repeated claim is that the Wildlife Photography Challenge was added to Story Mode. That is inaccurate: Rockstar describes Ambient Animals and the Wildlife Photography Challenge as GTA Online features.

Graphics and technical improvements

Ray tracing

Enhanced adds ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections. These effects can improve contact shadows, lighting depth, reflections on vehicles and wet surfaces, and the way scenes are illuminated. They are also among the most demanding options in the PC version, so they are not automatically worth enabling on every system.

DLSS, FSR and frame generation

Enhanced supports NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR. The PC Enhanced build also supports DLSS Frame Generation with VSync following the update to DLSS 2.9.1 documented in Title Update 1.72 notes.

These features can help you target a higher output resolution or frame rate, but their usefulness depends on your GPU, base frame rate and tolerance for image-processing artifacts. Enhanced is not guaranteed to run faster simply because it is newer: its visual upgrades raise the workload substantially.

Resolution, frame rate and audio

The Enhanced feature set includes support for higher resolutions, wider aspect ratios and higher frame rates. It also improves speech, cinematic and music fidelity. Dolby Atmos is supported when used with a compatible Windows Spatial Sound system.

Loading can improve significantly on an SSD, with DirectStorage available on supported systems. The result depends on the drive, CPU, GPU, Windows configuration and the rest of the PC, so “faster loading” should not be treated as a guaranteed fixed loading time.

PC system requirements

These are Rockstar’s current requirements listed on the GTAV store page. The practical distinction matters more than the storage numbers: a PC that runs Legacy smoothly may fail to launch Enhanced, deliver a lower frame rate or require reduced resolution and disabled ray tracing.

GTA Online differences

The largest gameplay difference is in GTA Online. Enhanced brings PC players features that were previously associated with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

Enhanced-exclusive or current-generation features

• Hao’s Special Works: performance conversions and exclusive vehicle modifications.
• HSW Races and Time Trials: activities built around HSW-tuned vehicles.
• Premium Test Rides: current-generation vehicle features.
• HSW vehicles: vehicles and upgrades unavailable in the same form on Legacy.
• Ambient Animals: animals across Southern San Andreas.
• Wildlife Photography Challenge: an Online activity, not a Story Mode addition.
• GTA+ on PC.
• Career Progress: progression tracking across GTA Online updates with associated rewards.
• Career Builder: a starting system for new GTA Online characters.
• Redesigned landing page.

Career Builder lets a new character choose an Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker path and provides a GTA$4,000,000 starting windfall for setting up the business.

Enhanced content is still expanding. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.73 notes identify Enhanced-only additions including the Grotti Veleno GT with an HSW upgrade, the Vapid Caracara (Armored), Career Progress Challenges for The Kortz Center Heist, and new Mission Creator features and example content limited to the current-generation branch.

Enhanced and Legacy cannot play GTA Online together

PC Enhanced and PC Legacy use separate multiplayer environments. An Enhanced player cannot join a Legacy player’s GTA Online session, and both players must launch the same version to play together.

This is the most important reason to keep Legacy installed. If your regular group remains on Legacy, moving alone to Enhanced will not let you join them. A new PC purchase includes both versions, so owning Enhanced does not remove access to Legacy.

How save migration works

Story Mode migration

To upload a Story Mode save from Legacy:

1. Open GTAV Legacy.
2. Open the Pause Menu and select Game.
3. Select Upload Save Game.
4. Choose the save and select Upload the Save Game.
5. Confirm the upload.

If Enhanced has no Story Mode saves, open Enhanced and select the Story tab on the Landing Page, then confirm the available download. If Enhanced already contains saves, use Pause Menu → Game → Download Save Game, choose the uploaded save and confirm.

There are important limits. Only one uploaded Story Mode save can exist per account. It can be replaced until it is downloaded, and it remains available for 90 days. Once downloaded in Enhanced, another Story Mode migration is not available on that account. Progress made in Legacy afterward does not synchronize back to Enhanced. PC-to-console and console-to-PC Story Mode migration is not supported. See Rockstar’s save-migration instructions.

GTA Online profile migration

If you have not played GTA Online in Enhanced, select Online from the Enhanced Landing Page, choose your profile on the Migrate Profile screen, confirm the migration, then choose the migrated character or create a new one on the Review Character screen.

If you have already entered Enhanced GTA Online, use Pause Menu → Online → Migrate Profile.

Online migration is one-time and cannot be reversed. The Legacy profile remains available, but Enhanced and Legacy progress no longer synchronizes. Rockstar may refuse migration for suspensions, bans, illegitimate progress or insufficient progress. You cannot enter GTA Online in either version while migration is processing. Selecting a new character after migration can overwrite the existing character slot. PC-to-console and console-to-PC Online migration is not supported.

Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack warning

Do not assume a newly created Enhanced character automatically receives every Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefit. Rockstar says the benefits must first be claimed by the relevant character in Legacy, including allowing the GTA$ deposit to arrive in that character’s Maze Bank account. The deposit may take 7–10 days. That character must then be migrated to Enhanced. Details are in Rockstar’s support article.

BattlEye, mods and compatibility

Enhanced uses BattlEye for official GTA Online sessions. BattlEye is required for Online, but it can be disabled for Story Mode. Official Rockstar Community RP Server launchers disable it because those servers do not require it. Steam Deck supports Story Mode but not GTA Online because BattlEye is not supported there.

ReShade and Special_K can cause launch or compatibility problems and may be disabled while BattlEye is active. Rockstar also lists some antivirus products, including AVG and Trend Micro, as possible sources of interference.

For official GTA Online through Rockstar Games Launcher:

1. Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Select Grand Theft Auto V under My installed games.
4. Scroll to Launch arguments.
5. Leave the text box blank and ensure BattlEye is enabled.

In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots under GTAV, choose Manage, scroll to Launch Options and ensure launch options are disabled with the text box blank. Rockstar recommends avoiding desktop shortcuts, .bat files and Command Prompt when troubleshooting BattlEye.

Disabling BattlEye does not preserve access to official GTA Online. Rockstar states that launching Online without it will not connect to official servers.

How to launch Enhanced Story Mode offline

For offline Story Mode through Rockstar Games Launcher:

1. Open Rockstar Games Launcher and select Settings.
2. Select Grand Theft Auto V.
3. Under Launch Arguments, enter -scofflineonly.
4. Select Games, then Play.

This prevents cloud synchronization and Online access until the argument is removed and the game is relaunched. Use Rockstar’s offline-launch guidance if the launcher does not behave as expected.

Which version should you use?

Choose Enhanced if:

• Your PC meets or exceeds the Enhanced requirements, preferably with an SSD.
• You want ray tracing, DLSS or FSR and higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate options.
• You play GTA Online and want HSW, GTA+, Career Progress, Ambient Animals and current Enhanced-exclusive content.
• You want faster loading on suitable hardware.
• Your friends are also moving to Enhanced.

Keep Legacy installed if:

• Your PC cannot comfortably meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements.
• You rely on older graphics mods or tools that conflict with BattlEye.
• Your friends or roleplay group play on Legacy.
• You mainly play the existing Story Mode and do not need the visual upgrades.
• You want to avoid one-time profile migration restrictions.

Should you buy GTA 5 again?

Existing PC owners should not buy it again. Claim and install the free Enhanced upgrade if your hardware supports it. Keep Legacy available if you need its lower requirements, its mod ecosystem or its separate multiplayer community.

New PC buyers should choose Enhanced by default. The purchase includes Legacy as well, so you retain the fallback version for an older PC, Legacy-only friends or compatibility-sensitive mods. The main exceptions are a PC that cannot meet Enhanced’s requirements and a buyer whose priority is specifically Legacy-only modding or multiplayer.

Enhanced is the definitive PC version for capable hardware and current GTA Online content, but it is not a new Story Mode campaign and it does not replace Legacy. Think of it as a free, higher-demand technical upgrade with a separate Online ecosystem and a one-time migration decision.
