Lenovo has demonstrated a working rollable gaming-laptop prototype, but it has not launched one. The Legion Pro Rollable Concept, unveiled at CES 2026 on January 6, starts with a 16-inch OLED screen and expands horizontally to 21.5 inches or 24 inches. Fully open, Lenovo describes it as a 24:9 ultrawide display.
It remains a concept and proof of concept. Lenovo has not announced a consumer price, release date, retail model number, final resolution, refresh rate, or purchase page for the rollable Legion.
What Lenovo actually announced
The Legion Pro Rollable Concept is a premium gaming-laptop design intended to explore a problem familiar to PC gamers: a conventional laptop is easy to carry, but its built-in screen is much smaller than a desktop gaming monitor.
Rather than expanding vertically like Lenovo’s productivity-focused rollable laptop, the Legion concept grows sideways. The display begins in a conventional 16-inch configuration, then expands to an intermediate 21.5-inch state or a maximum 24-inch state. Lenovo’s UXD explanation identifies the fully expanded format as 24:9 ultrawide.

Lenovo calls the device a concept and proof of concept, not a product scheduled for general sale. Its CES announcement therefore demonstrates the technology without confirming that a retail Legion laptop will follow.
How the rollable screen works
The flexible OLED panel rolls into the laptop’s housing and extends from both sides when activated. Lenovo says the mechanism uses two motors and a tension-based design to control the movement. The company also says the arrangement is intended to minimize vibration and noise while the screen expands or retracts.
Those are Lenovo’s design claims, not an independent durability test. There is no publicly established cycle rating, repair cost, obstruction response, or long-term reliability record for this prototype. A future retail model would need to answer those questions before buyers could judge the mechanism as a dependable daily feature.
What “24:9 ultrawide” means
The numbers describe two different things:
- Screen size: Lenovo lists 16 inches, 21.5 inches, and 24 inches for the different physical states.
- Aspect ratio: The maximum expanded configuration is described as 24:9, an unusually wide format.
A 24-inch diagonal screen in a 24:9 shape is not equivalent to a conventional 24-inch desktop monitor. It is considerably wider relative to its height, so the viewing geometry, usable vertical space, and desk footprint will differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLenovo has not publicly confirmed the final resolution of the Legion concept in the cited material. The 24:9 label also does not guarantee that every game will render correctly in the expanded mode. Support depends on each game’s aspect-ratio handling, field-of-view rules, HUD layout, and resolution settings.
Why gamers might want it
The concept’s strongest potential benefit is giving a player more horizontal space without requiring a separate monitor. In games that support ultrawide displays properly, the wider view could make environments feel more immersive and may show more of the game world horizontally.

- GLOW UP YOUR VISUALS – The FHD IPS display is perfect for gaming and watching your favorite streams. NVIDIA G-Sync technology eliminates screen tearing, stuttering, and input lag, ensuring silky-smooth frame rates.
The extra space could also be useful outside the game itself. A streamer might keep a game, chat, recording controls, and monitoring tools visible together. A player studying competitive footage could place maps, statistics, or analysis windows beside the main game. The intermediate 21.5-inch state could offer a compromise between the normal laptop format and the maximum footprint.
These are potential use cases rather than guaranteed advantages. Some games may add black bars, crop the image, stretch content, or place fixed HUD elements awkwardly on an ultrawide screen. A wider display also does not increase gaming performance; it can increase the number of pixels the GPU must render.

The unknowns that matter more than the novelty
Durability
A rollable laptop adds motors, guides, tensioned components, and a flexible display surface to hardware that is routinely carried, opened, closed, and exposed to heat and dust. Important unanswered questions include how many expansion cycles the mechanism is rated for, what happens when something blocks the side sections, and whether the panel can be replaced separately from the motor assembly.
Buyers would also need clear warranty and accidental-damage terms. Lenovo has not published those details for the concept.
Resolution, scaling, and software behavior
A practical retail version would need to manage several physical screen states gracefully. It is not yet clear whether the resolution changes between states, whether the newly exposed area provides native desktop space, or how Windows would reposition windows when the display retracts.
Other useful questions include whether the laptop can switch between 16:9, 16:10, and 24:9 software modes independently of the physical screen, whether games change aspect ratio automatically, and what happens if a window spans the expanded area when the user begins retracting it.

Refresh rate and GPU load
Lenovo has not confirmed the rollable display’s refresh rate. The current Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 is useful only as context: Lenovo lists that conventional 16-inch platform with an OLED display option reaching up to 240 Hz, alongside selected RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 Laptop GPU configurations in its official specifications. Those figures must not be transferred to the rollable concept.
If the expanded panel uses a substantially wider native resolution, maintaining high frame rates could require more GPU power than gaming on the laptop’s smaller screen. The final resolution, refresh rate, graphics settings, and upscaling support will determine the real performance requirement.
Portability versus usability
The laptop may remain compact enough to carry when the display is retracted, but that does not mean it will be convenient to use everywhere. Fully open, it could need a large, stable desk and clearance on both sides. It may be awkward on an airplane tray table, a train table, or a small café surface, and it is unlikely to be comfortable as a true lap device in its widest configuration.
There is also a fit question: the expanded screen may require more space than a normal 16-inch laptop sleeve or workstation. “Portable to carry” and “portable to use at full size” are different advantages.
Weight, heat, and complexity
High-end gaming laptops already need substantial cooling and power delivery. Adding a rollable display assembly, protective housing, motors, and structural reinforcement could affect weight, thickness, battery life, cost, and serviceability. These are engineering risks to evaluate, not confirmed defects in Lenovo’s prototype.
What hardware might be inside?
CES coverage linked the demonstration unit to the Legion Pro 7i platform and described high-end hardware, reportedly including an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. That helps establish the concept’s intended performance tier, but it is not a final specification sheet for a future retail product.

For comparison, the commercially documented Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 supports Intel Core Ultra processors, a conventional 16-inch display, and graphics configurations up to the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU depending on the model. The rollable version could share design DNA with that platform without shipping with the same processor, display, GPU, ports, battery, or cooling configuration.

The ThinkBook datasheet lists a flexible OLED panel, 400-nit brightness, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Those are ThinkBook specifications and should not be assumed to apply to the Legion concept.
Should you wait for Lenovo’s rollable gaming laptop?
Wait only if you are interested in experimental display hardware and do not need a gaming laptop immediately. There is currently no guarantee that the Legion Pro Rollable Concept will become a retail product, so rumored launch timing should not drive a purchase decision.
Buy a conventional Legion now if you need dependable high-end gaming performance. The current Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 is an available product family with OLED options and up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU in selected configurations. Lenovo US listings have shown prices ranging from roughly $2,899.99 for some configurations to more than $4,900 for higher-end RTX 5090 models, but promotions, configurations, and availability change frequently; check the official store for current information.
Choose a normal gaming laptop plus an external ultrawide monitor if ultrawide gaming is your priority and you mainly play at a desk. This setup lacks the rollable concept’s all-in-one portability, but it avoids moving-screen hardware and lets you replace the laptop or monitor independently.
Consider the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable only if your goal is expandable productivity space. It is not a substitute for a Legion gaming laptop, a discrete high-end gaming GPU, or a horizontal 24:9 display.
