Yes—Sony permanently reduced the US recommended retail price of PlayStation VR2 to $399.99. The change was announced on February 27, 2025, with the new pricing taking effect in March 2025. It is not a newly announced August 2026 price cut, although temporary retailer promotions have sometimes pushed the headset below $399.
The standard headset and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle both received a $399.99 US recommended price. For existing PS5 owners, that makes PS VR2 considerably more compelling; for everyone else, the required console and wired design remain important parts of the calculation.
Is $399 the regular PS VR2 price?
Sony’s announced US RRP is $399.99, effective from March 2025. That is a permanent recommended-price revision, not merely a limited sale. Sony’s announcement covers both the standard PS VR2 package and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle at the same RRP.
Retailers may sell the headset for less during promotions. Reports of approximately $299 pricing refer to temporary discounts, not a replacement for Sony’s $399.99 RRP. Stock, taxes, regional pricing and promotional dates can vary, so check whether a listing is new, refurbished, used or marketplace-sold.

What comes in the box?
The standard PS VR2 package includes:
- PS VR2 headset
- Left and right PS VR2 Sense controllers
- USB charging cable
- Stereo headphones
- Three sizes of ear tips
- Printed documentation
The Horizon bundle adds a digital PlayStation Store voucher for Horizon Call of the Mountain. It is not a physical disc. Redemption requires a PlayStation account and high-speed internet, and the voucher is subject to regional and age restrictions. If both packages cost $399.99 and you want the game, the Horizon version is normally the better value.
Choose the standard package instead if you already own the game, the bundle is unavailable, or the standard headset is discounted more heavily. Confirm that the voucher is redeemable in your country before buying.
See the official PlayStation Direct listing and PS VR2 product page for package and account details.
The real cost of getting started
The $399.99 headset is not a complete VR system. You need a PlayStation 5, which is sold separately, plus compatible VR software. PS VR2 does not work with PS4, and original PS VR and PS VR2 games are not automatically interchangeable.
You also need an appropriate play area. Sony specifies at least 2m × 2m—about 6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in—for room-scale experiences. Individual games can have different space and play-style requirements.

Games are an additional cost, although some titles may already be in your library or available through promotions. Compatible examples include Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Horizon Call of the Mountain, No Man’s Sky, Hitman World of Assassination, Pavlov, Walkabout Mini Golf, Tetris Effect: Connected and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. What PS VR2 offers on PS5
Sony lists a combined resolution of 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, a field of view of approximately 110 degrees, eye tracking, HDR visuals on compatible PS5 experiences, headset feedback, Sense-controller haptics and adaptive triggers. Four built-in cameras provide inside-out tracking, while a single cable connects the headset to the PS5.
Those features are game-dependent. They are not a guarantee that every PS VR2 title uses every capability, but they explain why PS VR2 can be attractive to PS5 owners who want more than basic stereoscopic VR.
PS5 mode versus PC mode
PS VR2 can be used with a Windows gaming PC, but it does not work there out of the box. You need Sony’s PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, which Sony announced at an estimated US price of $59.99, plus a DisplayPort 1.4 cable sold separately.
| Feature | PS5 | PC |
|---|---|---|
| PS VR2 works | Yes | Yes, with adapter |
| HDR | Supported | Not supported |
| Eye tracking | Supported | Not supported |
| Headset feedback | Supported | Not supported |
| Adaptive triggers | Supported | Not supported |
| Sense-controller haptics | Supported | Limited to basic vibration |
| SteamVR access | No direct native access | Yes |
| Extra adapter | No | Yes |
For PC use, Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, at least 8GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 processor, a GTX 1650-or-newer Nvidia GPU or specified AMD equivalent, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Sony recommends an RTX 3060 or newer, or an RX 6600 XT or newer, for better performance.
The adapter should connect directly to the PC rather than through a USB hub or extension cable. Common compatibility problems include laptops without the required DisplayPort path, attempting to use an unsuitable USB-C video connection, incompatible Bluetooth hardware and graphics cards below Sony’s requirements. Consult the official PC support page before purchasing.

The strongest reasons to buy are specific experiences rather than the size of the library alone:
- Racing: Gran Turismo 7 is a particularly strong reason for PS5 owners who want an immersive driving setup.
- Horror: Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village make VR a compelling choice for players comfortable with intense first-person horror.
- First-party showcase: Horizon Call of the Mountain is the natural introduction to the Horizon bundle.
- Exploration: No Man’s Sky offers a broader, ongoing VR experience rather than a short hardware demonstration.
- Social and specialist play: Pavlov, Walkabout Mini Golf and compatible simulation titles suit buyers looking for repeat sessions.
PC support expands the selection through SteamVR, but PC mode should be viewed as a library expansion—not as a feature-equivalent version of PS5 use.
Who should buy PS VR2 at $399?
- Existing PS5 owners: This is the clearest audience. The headset is a $399.99 accessory rather than the first part of a new console purchase.
- Racing and horror fans: The PS5 library gives the headset a clear purpose beyond casual experimentation.
- Dual-platform players: A capable gaming PC can add SteamVR, provided you budget for the adapter, cable and feature compromises.
- Original PS VR owners: The display, tracking and controllers are a substantial new-generation upgrade, but old games are not automatically compatible.
Reconsider PS VR2 if you want wireless, standalone VR, do not own a PS5, or primarily want PC VR with full eye tracking, HDR, adaptive triggers and headset feedback. A standalone headset may be a better fit for buyers who prioritize wireless convenience and do not already have Sony’s console ecosystem.
PS VR2 is also not intended for children under 12, according to Sony’s product guidance.

At $399.99, PS VR2 is a much stronger proposition for a PS5 owner than it was at its launch price. Buy if you already have the console, want one or more of its standout games, and value OLED HDR visuals and Sony’s tracking and feedback features. If the standard and Horizon packages are the same price, choose Horizon if you want the included game.
Wait for a retailer sale if you are price-sensitive or not in a hurry; promotional pricing has gone lower. But do not confuse a $299 deal with Sony lowering the permanent RRP again. If you still need a PS5, include that console—and your games—in the total before deciding.
