Verdict: the original HP Victus 15 review was about the 2022 Victus 15-fa0020nr, equipped with an Intel Core i7-12700H and RTX 3050 Ti. Notebookcheck rated it 81% but called it “Pricey And Buggy” because its gaming performance was respectable while its display, battery life, software issues, and price weakened the overall value. That verdict should not be applied automatically to every newer Victus 15.
In 2026, an RTX 4050 or RTX 5050 Victus 15 can be a good 1080p gaming laptop—but only when the exact configuration has 16GB of RAM, a decent 144Hz display, sensible GPU power limits, and a price clearly below better-equipped alternatives.
The HP Victus 15 model originally reviewed
The headline refers specifically to Notebookcheck’s review of the HP Victus 15-fa0020nr, a 2022-era configuration with:
- Intel Core i7-12700H
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU
- 15.6-inch 1920×1080 display
- 512GB-class SSD
- HP’s Victus 15-fa chassis
It is not a review of every laptop sold as a Victus 15. HP has since sold Victus 15 models with AMD processors, RTX 4050 graphics, RTX 5050 graphics, different batteries, displays, memory, storage, and port layouts. Victus 16 models are also separate products.

Notebookcheck gave the reviewed machine an 81% rating, while its verdict was “Pricey And Buggy.” The important distinction is that “expensive” described the tested configuration’s value at the time, not an eternal rule about the Victus brand.
Performance: good 1080p gaming, limited headroom
The RTX 3050 Ti Victus 15 is fundamentally a 1080p gaming laptop. It is well suited to competitive games such as Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, and Fortnite at sensible settings. Those games are where a 144Hz panel makes the most sense.
Notebookcheck recorded 97.4 frames per second in Dota 2 Reborn at 1080p ultra and 54.7 fps in its tested Strange Brigade benchmark. These are measurements of that review unit, not promises for every game today. Drivers, patches, memory configuration, power modes, and newer game engines can all change results.
Modern AAA games require more realistic expectations. High or ultra settings will not always deliver high frame rates, and the commonly used 4GB of VRAM on RTX 3050 Ti laptops limits texture headroom. Ray tracing is generally a poor trade-off unless image upscaling is doing much of the work. DLSS can improve performance in supported games, but it does not transform an entry-level GPU into a high-end one.
The Core i7-12700H remains a capable processor for gaming, schoolwork, coding, office applications, and light content creation. However, current Victus 15 systems may use processors such as Intel’s Core 5 210H, 13th-generation Core i5 chips, Ryzen 7 processors, or Ryzen AI parts. Processor branding alone is therefore not enough to identify the value of a listing.
The display is the biggest configuration trap
“Full HD Victus 15” does not identify one screen. The original platform was sold with several panels, including 60Hz TN, 60Hz IPS, 144Hz IPS, and brighter 300-nit IPS options, according to Notebookcheck’s specifications.
For gaming, prefer a 144Hz IPS display. But refresh rate is only the starting point:
- Brightness: a 250-nit panel is acceptable indoors but weak near windows or in bright rooms.
- Color: many budget configurations cover only a modest portion of the sRGB gamut, making them unsuitable for color-critical creative work.
- Response time: 144Hz does not guarantee low ghosting.
- Resolution: 1080p is appropriate for this GPU class, although it is less sharp than 1440p at 15.6 inches.
One newer HP specification lists a 144Hz, 300-nit panel with 62.5% sRGB coverage, while other Victus 15 configurations differ. Check the complete product number and specification sheet rather than relying on a retailer’s “FHD 144Hz” label. HP’s current listings are available on its official Victus page.

It is not an ultraportable. A current RTX 4050 example is listed at 2.29kg with a 70Wh battery, before accounting for the sizeable charger. Fan noise under gaming load, plastic construction, webcam quality, speakers, hinge feel, and touchpad quality are all typical areas where the Victus 15 gives up refinement to stay affordable.
Port selection varies by generation and processor. One HP specification sheet lists USB-A, USB-C with DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, RJ-45 Ethernet, a headset jack, and an SD-card reader. Other SKUs may differ, so verify the exact listing if you need a particular connector, external display feature, or card reader.
Battery life and thermals
Do not buy the Victus 15 expecting all-day battery life. Tom’s Hardware measured 4 hours and 47 minutes under its video-streaming, web-browsing, and OpenGL Wi-Fi test at 150 nits. Notebookcheck also described battery life as poor across its tested settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThose results are configuration-specific. Battery life changes with battery capacity, display refresh rate, Windows power mode, brightness, browser workload, hybrid-graphics behavior, and whether the discrete GPU remains active. Gaming normally requires the charger; unplugged play can reduce performance and battery endurance.
Thermal performance also depends on the specific GPU implementation. An RTX 4050 or RTX 5050 is not a single performance level. The newer RTX 5050 Victus 15 review reported an 80W GPU limit, below Nvidia’s maximum laptop-GPU power level. A lower-power RTX 5050 can therefore perform behind a better-cooled laptop using the same GPU.
Before buying, check the stated TGP, long-session performance mode, fan noise, charger capacity, and whether the keyboard or palm rest becomes uncomfortable under sustained load.
Why the original review called it expensive
The original Victus 15 was not expensive because it was slow. Its Core i7-12700H and RTX 3050 Ti provided useful gaming and productivity performance. The problem was that its price placed it close to laptops with stronger graphics hardware, better displays, higher GPU power limits, or more capable cooling.

The relevant question was therefore not “Does the Victus work?” but “What else could the same money buy?”
That is a relative-value judgment. A heavily discounted RTX 3050 Ti Victus can still be useful, while a newer RTX 4050 model may be a much better purchase at the right sale price.

What changed in newer Victus 15 models?
HP’s current US range includes materially different examples. One listing combines a Core 5 210H, RTX 5050, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and 144Hz display. Other configurations pair a Core i5 or Ryzen 7 with an RTX 4050, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD.
This creates two common traps. First, a newer GPU does not compensate for a poor screen, single-channel 8GB memory, or a low power limit. Second, a model advertised with the same “Victus 15” name may have a different battery, RAM type, SSD layout, wireless card, or port selection.

Victus 15 versus Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro, and Asus TUF
The Victus 15 is most attractive when HP’s discount is substantially better. Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro V, and Asus TUF Gaming are the key alternatives because they frequently offer similar Nvidia GPUs in the same budget range.
Compare the complete specifications, not just the GPU badge:
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| GPU TGP | A higher-power RTX 4050, 4060, or 5050 can outperform a lower-power version with the same name. |
| RAM | Prefer 16GB, ideally in two channels. 8GB can cause stutter and limits multitasking. |
| Display | Check IPS, refresh rate, brightness, gamut, and response time. |
| Cooling | It determines sustained performance, fan noise, and temperatures. |
| Storage | 512GB is a minimum; 1TB is more practical for large game installs. |
| Warranty and returns | Important if the laptop develops display, sleep/wake, Wi-Fi, or charging problems. |
Use the official pages for Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro, and Asus TUF Gaming to compare current configurations. LOQ models can offer stronger cooling or graphics switching, while Nitro and TUF models can be competitive on sale. They may also weigh more or cost more than an equivalently discounted Victus.
RAM, storage, and upgrade checks
A sensible new Victus 15 configuration has:
- 16GB RAM, preferably dual-channel
- At least a 512GB SSD
- 1TB storage if you maintain a large game library
- A confirmed upgrade path if the laptop ships with 8GB
HP listings include both 16GB/1TB and 8GB/512GB combinations. Do not assume that every model has the same RAM type, two accessible memory slots, or a second M.2 slot. Confirm the exact service documentation before budgeting for an upgrade.

Notebookcheck’s “buggy” verdict applies to its reviewed unit and experience. It should not be converted into a claim that every Victus 15 has a model-wide defect rate. Conversely, buyers should not ignore reports of display flicker, sleep/wake problems, driver conflicts, or inconsistent behavior simply because they are difficult to quantify.
Use the return period as a test window. Update the BIOS and chipset/GPU drivers, then check the display for flicker and dead pixels, test sleep and wake, verify Wi-Fi and Ethernet, connect an external display over USB-C or HDMI, test the speakers and webcam, confirm the advertised RAM and SSD, and run a sustained game while monitoring clocks and temperatures.

Which HP Victus 15 should you buy?
RTX 3050 or RTX 3050 Ti
Buy only at clearance pricing. These models can handle 1080p gaming, but they have less VRAM and less long-term headroom than newer options. Do not pay an RTX 4050-like price for one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
RTX 4050
This is the safest budget choice when paired with 16GB RAM, a good 144Hz display, and at least 512GB of storage. It is attractive when materially cheaper than RTX 4060 or better-equipped LOQ, Nitro, and TUF alternatives.
RTX 5050
Potentially worthwhile, but verify the GPU power limit, memory, screen, and SSD. An 8GB/512GB model near $1,000 is difficult to recommend unless the RAM upgrade is inexpensive and straightforward. Do not assume that every RTX 5050 implementation performs alike.
Any Victus 15 near $1,000 or more
Shop around before buying. At this level, compare the Victus with RTX 4060 and higher-power RTX 5050 laptops, particularly Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro, and Asus TUF deals. The Victus must win on total configuration and price, not merely availability.
