Their PlayStation Link connection is the distinctive feature; Bluetooth adds flexibility for other devices. But the premium review-era price is harder to justify if you mainly want everyday earbuds: the stated battery life is modest, there is no active noise cancellation, and rivals offer more features. Whether they are overpriced comes down to how much you value Portal integration.
What makes PULSE Explore different?
PULSE Explore supports both PlayStation Link and Bluetooth. Sony lists the earbuds as compatible with PS5, PC, Mac, and PlayStation Portal, and says a PlayStation Link USB adapter is included for compatible devices. That direct Portal support is the clearest reason to choose them over ordinary Bluetooth earbuds.
Sony describes PlayStation Link as delivering “ultra-low latency and lossless” audio. That is Sony’s product claim, not an independent measurement. In a PlayStation Blog demonstration, Sony also showed the earbuds connected to PlayStation Link and Bluetooth at the same time, allowing game audio and phone audio to be heard together.
Sony’s manual lists each earbud at approximately 6.1 g with medium tips and the charging case at approximately 71 g. Sony notes that design and specifications may change without notice.

Are they comfortable and good-sounding?
Reviewers generally find the sound engaging for games, though their judgments are not identical. TechRadar reported highly detailed sound and praised Portal pairing after testing with PS5 and Portal for nearly two months. SoundGuys described the earbuds as immersive for PS5 gaming but found the music experience mixed. Treat these as review assessments rather than guaranteed results for every listener.
The compact in-ear design does not bring the noise control of some competing gaming earbuds. SoundGuys notes that PULSE Explore has no active noise cancellation, while RTINGS describes weaker isolation and a comparatively limited feature set. If you play in a noisy space or want adjustable noise cancellation, that is a meaningful compromise.

How long does the battery last?
Battery numbers vary by source and measurement method. TechRadar lists five hours of playback from the earbuds and another ten hours from the charging case. SoundGuys tested the earbuds over a 15-day review on firmware 24.01-08.60.00 and measured eight hours and 41 minutes on a single charge, longer than Sony’s stated five-hour figure according to that review. The SoundGuys result is one test, not a promised runtime for every user or setting.
The case extends listening time, but buyers should compare the stated earbud runtime—not just the combined total—with alternatives if they expect long sessions between charges.

How do they compare with alternatives?
These review-era prices are historical comparison figures, not current offers. Retail pricing and availability can change by region and date.
| Option | Connection and Portal fit | Battery, noise control, and features | Review-era price |
|---|---|---|---|
| PULSE Explore | Wireless PlayStation Link and Bluetooth; Sony lists Portal compatibility. | TechRadar lists five hours from the earbuds plus ten from the case. No ANC, according to SoundGuys. | TechRadar listed $199.99 / £199.99 in its review price section. |
| Sony INZONE Buds | Wireless gaming earbuds; the cited comparison does not establish direct Portal compatibility. | TechRadar describes longer battery life and noise cancellation. RTINGS cites ANC, a companion app, longer battery life, and better mic performance than PULSE Explore. | TechRadar comparison figures: $198 / £179.99 / AU$249. |
| SteelSeries Tusq | Wired earbuds for devices with an audio jack; no direct wireless Portal connection. | Wired design avoids charging the earbuds; the cited comparison does not provide comparable battery, ANC, or app figures. | TechRadar comparison figures: $39.99 / £44.99 / AU$79. |
TechRadar noted that discounts and price drops on PULSE Explore were becoming common at the time of its review. Check the price available to you rather than treating its launch-era figure as today’s market price. TechRadar also identifies PULSE Elite as another PlayStation Link option for Portal users, but the cited comparison does not provide enough matching details here for a like-for-like table.

Who should buy PULSE Explore?
- Consider them if you own a PlayStation Portal and value direct PlayStation Link audio, or want to switch between game audio and a Bluetooth-connected phone.
- Compare alternatives first if you prioritize active noise cancellation, stronger isolation, microphone performance, app-based sound customization, or longer stated battery life.
- Skip the premium if you do not need wireless Portal integration. A wired option such as Tusq costs less in TechRadar’s comparison and suits devices with an audio jack, while INZONE Buds emphasize battery and noise-control features.
