The top two teams in each tournament earn a place. The exact rules change by Olympic cycle, so Paris 2024 is a historical example—not a guide to LA28’s detailed eligibility rules.
How many field hockey teams qualify for LA28?
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) says 12 teams per gender will compete at LA28. Its published qualification system identifies four routes: the host nation, the FIH Hockey Pro League, continental championships and four Olympic Qualification Tournaments. The top two teams in each qualification tournament qualify. FIH’s LA28 system announcement is the source for the current published format.
These routes are not interchangeable, and qualification is not decided by world ranking alone. Ranking can matter where a cycle’s rules specify it, but teams earn places through the defined pathway and competition results. Future qualifiers’ outcomes cannot be known until those competitions are completed.
What are the LA28 qualification routes?
Host nation
The host may receive a place subject to that Olympic cycle’s eligibility conditions. The LA28 announcement establishes a host route, but the conditions should be checked in the official LA28 system rather than inferred from an earlier Games.

FIH Hockey Pro League
The Pro League is included as a route in the published LA28 system. Its eligibility and allocation provisions are specific to that system; Paris 2024 did not use this route. Consult the FIH LA28 announcement for the cycle’s published terms.
Continental championships
Continental competitions provide direct places, but the events and allocation rules depend on the cycle. Do not assume that a runner-up qualifies: Paris 2024, for example, awarded direct continental places to champions, while LA28’s detailed event-specific rules must be read in its own system.

Olympic Qualification Tournaments
LA28 has four Olympic Qualification Tournaments, and the top two teams in each qualify. These events provide another route for teams that have not secured a place through an earlier route. The number of tournaments and qualifying finish can change between Games.
How did the Paris 2024 pathway differ?
Paris 2024 had 12 teams per gender, but its pathway differed from the published LA28 format. France received host places after its men’s and women’s teams met FIH’s condition of ranking 25th or better in the world rankings after the Tokyo Games. The five continental events were the African Hockey Road to Paris, Pan American Games, Asian Games, EuroHockey Championship and Oceania Cup; each event’s champion earned a place for its National Olympic Committee (NOC). Two Olympic Qualification Tournaments then awarded places to their top three finishers. FIH’s 2022 Paris quota announcement and the official Paris 2024 qualification system set out those historical rules.

The Paris rules also show why qualification details cannot be generalized from one cycle to another. If France had won the EuroHockey Championship as well as receiving its host place, the runner-up would not have inherited a direct Olympic place; that place was to be allocated through the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, according to the Paris 2024 system.

Yes. Belgium finished second at the EuroHockey Championship for Paris 2024, then qualified by finishing in the top three at the Valencia Olympic Qualifier. India qualified directly by winning the Asian championship. These examples, reported by FIH’s account of how the Paris teams qualified, illustrate the distinction between a direct continental place and a place earned at a qualification tournament.

Do players qualify individually, or does a country qualify?
The pathway awards places to National Olympic Committees (NOCs), not to individual athletes independently. The number of athletes each team may enter is a separate rule defined for each Olympic cycle. For Paris 2024, the approved system set a squad limit of 16 athletes per team; that historical limit should not be assumed for LA28. The Paris qualification system contains the roster rule.
Quick Recap
What should you check when following qualification?
- Identify the Olympic cycle: LA28 and Paris 2024 have different published pathways.
- Check the current official system for host eligibility, continental events and allocation, Pro League provisions, tournament count and qualifying finishes.
- Distinguish a team’s world ranking from a qualification place; ranking matters only where the cycle’s rules make it relevant.
- Track places by NOC and team, then check that cycle’s separate squad-size rules.
