Can you play Old School RuneScape without membership?
Yes. Jagex’s official OSRS page labels the game “PLAY FREE,” so you can try it without first buying a subscription: Play Old School RuneScape. Free play is an entry point, not access to every part of the game. Jagex describes membership as unlocking the full world and map, along with exclusive content.
What does OSRS membership add?
Membership opens up member-only skills, regions, quests, bosses, and additional bank space. Jagex’s membership page, accessed 4 October 2026, describes the following features; these are Jagex’s product-page claims, not independent measurements: OSRS membership benefits.

These counts and descriptions can change as the game is updated. They indicate the breadth of the membership offering, but not how much any particular player will enjoy or use it.

Is OSRS membership worth it for you?
Membership is most compelling if the content you want to pursue is members-only. It is less immediately valuable if you are still deciding whether OSRS suits you or are content with the activities available in free play. Jagex describes the game as community-led and highlights skills, quests, raids, and bosses, but whether the paid expansion is worth the cost is a personal judgment.
Start free if you are still deciding
Free play lets you try the game before committing to a recurring subscription. If you are unsure, use that time to see whether you enjoy OSRS and to identify what you want to do next. Membership becomes easier to justify when a particular members-only skill, quest, area, or boss is the reason you want to continue.

Consider membership when you want the expanded game
If you expect to play regularly and want access to the broader set of regions and activities, membership may offer more value to you than it would to an occasional player. That is a budgeting judgment, not a guarantee that you will get a certain amount of playtime or enjoyment for your money.
How much does OSRS membership cost?
Check the official OSRS membership page for the current offer available to your account. Jagex lists 1-month and 12-month billing options, but prices can vary by region, platform, and plan; a single universal price cannot be stated here. Jagex Support notes that only one-month subscriptions bought through Jagex’s store and maintained since before 27 September 2024 qualify for grandfathered rates. Can you use in-game wealth to get membership?
Yes. Jagex says Old School Bonds can be traded directly between players or through the Grand Exchange, then redeemed for membership. Bonds are specific to Old School RuneScape and cannot be moved into RuneScape: Old School Membership Bonds. This avoids paying directly for the membership time, but it is not cost-free: acquiring or redeeming a bond uses in-game wealth that could have been spent elsewhere.

What to know before subscribing
- Renewal: Jagex subscriptions automatically renew unless you cancel before the term ends. Under Jagex’s subscription terms, a renewal payment may be taken up to 72 hours before expiry. Read the subscription terms before purchasing.
- Where to manage it: Review your plan and renewal date in account management. Cancel through Jagex if you subscribed there, or through the store you used, such as Apple, Google, or Steam. See Jagex’s subscription management guidance.
- Character and game access: Membership purchased for a character works for that character in both RuneScape and Old School. When membership expires without an extension, the account returns to free-to-play and loses subscription benefits, according to Jagex’s terms.
How to decide
- Start with free play if you have not yet decided whether you like OSRS.
- Identify the members-only skill, quest, region, or boss you want access to.
- Check the current plan and price shown for your region and chosen purchase platform.
- Before subscribing, confirm the renewal date and cancellation route for that platform.
- If paying directly is not your preferred route, consider whether using in-game wealth for a bond is worth its opportunity cost.
