Both the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are 65 W Zen 4 processors for AM5 systems, but neither can display a picture on its own: AMD requires a discrete graphics card for both. The 8700F has more cores and a higher maximum boost; the 8400F has fewer cores. Which makes more sense for a gaming build depends on current local prices and relevant independent benchmarks—neither is established as the better value by specifications alone.
Ryzen 7 8700F vs. Ryzen 5 8400F: specifications
AMD lists both processors as AM5 desktop CPUs using DDR5 memory, PCIe 4.0, and a 65 W default TDP. Their principal differences are core count and maximum boost frequency.

AMD’s product pages break down cache as 8 MB L2 plus 16 MB L3 on the 8700F, and 6 MB L2 plus 16 MB L3 on the 8400F. AMD’s May 2024 F-series guide gives the rounded combined totals shown above. What the differences mean for a gaming PC
The 8700F has more CPU capacity on paper
Eight cores and 16 threads give the Ryzen 7 8700F more parallel processing capacity than the 8400F’s six cores and 12 threads. Its maximum boost specification is also 300 MHz higher. Those numbers describe specifications, not a guaranteed frame-rate lead: this source set contains no controlled gaming comparison between the two CPUs.

The 8400F is not automatically the better budget choice
The Ryzen 5 8400F’s lower core count makes it the less expansive option on paper, but “budget” does not establish value. Retail prices, stock, and regional availability were not verified here. Compare current local prices and independent tests conducted with comparable graphics cards, memory, games, resolutions, and settings before choosing.
Neither CPU includes usable integrated graphics
AMD specifies that a discrete graphics card is required for both processors. Plan for a GPU in the build budget; do not assume the PC can drive a monitor from the motherboard’s video outputs using either CPU. AMD’s listing of an AI engine for the 8700F is a separate capability and does not change that graphics requirement.

What else you need to build around either CPU
- An AM5 motherboard: The processors use socket AM5. Check the board’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying, especially if the board has been sitting in stock.
- DDR5 memory: Both are DDR5 platforms. Choose a compatible kit and confirm the motherboard’s memory support.
- A discrete graphics card: Required for display output with either F-series CPU. The appropriate GPU depends on your games, resolution, and total budget.
- Cooling: AMD’s May 2024 guide lists a Wraith Stealth cooler with each model. Confirm the exact package and SKU in the listing you plan to buy; the guide does not establish what every retailer bundle includes.
- Power supply and case: Select these around the graphics card and the rest of the system, rather than treating the CPUs’ 65 W default TDP as the whole-system power requirement.
AI engine and launch context
AMD’s current 8700F product page lists an AI engine rated up to 16 TOPS, and its May 2024 guide identifies XDNA. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent performance test. AMD’s 8400F product page and guide do not list an AI engine for that model. These distinctions do not imply integrated graphics: AMD requires a discrete graphics card for both processors.
AMD’s product pages give April 1, 2024, as the launch date for both CPUs. Tom’s Hardware reported on April 11, 2024, that AMD had confirmed their worldwide launch after an earlier China announcement, and noted that pricing had not been disclosed at that time. That launch-era report is not a guide to present-day prices. Tom’s Hardware launch coverage, April 11, 2024.
