Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan argues that players can welcome AI when it helps developers make better games—even if they dislike obvious, low-quality generative content. That is a case for useful AI tools, not proof that gamers broadly “love” AI development. A 2025 McKinsey survey found a mix of opposition and conditional support, with views varying according to how AI is used.
What Tan means by gamers loving AI in development
Razer’s February 4, 2026 recap of Tan’s appearance on The Verge’s Decoder podcast frames his argument around the result players care about: a more engaging, immersive game. Tan distinguishes AI used to help developers from AI used to replace human creativity, and Razer says its development focus includes finding issues earlier and automating repetitive work. Those are Razer’s stated goals, not independently verified outcomes.
As quoted in Razer’s recap, Tan said: “As gamers… what we’re unhappy with is GenAI slop. When I play a game, I want to be engaged. I want to be immersed. I want to compete. I don’t want to see characters with extra fingers or shoddily written storylines.” He also described AI as “a tool to help game developers make better games… rather than replace human creativity.” The remarks capture a distinction between a tool’s use and the quality of what reaches players; they do not establish that all gamers share his view. “AI in games” can mean very different things
AI is not one single game-development feature. Traditional game AI, such as systems that control non-player characters, has existed for years. The current debate often centers on generative AI, which can produce or alter content. Razer’s examples also include tools used behind the scenes and an AI companion aimed at players.

| Use | What it does | What players may notice |
|---|---|---|
| QA and workflow support | Helps developers identify issues, organize bug reports, or handle repetitive tasks. | Potentially fewer defects or a smoother release, if the tools work as intended. |
| Player-facing coaching or assistance | Responds to a player or offers guidance during play. | Direct interaction with an AI feature; value depends on its usefulness and fit. |
| Generative content | Creates or changes elements such as writing, art, or other game content. | Players may encounter the generated material directly, making quality and disclosure salient. |
These categories raise different questions. A bug-triage tool does not raise the same creative-control concerns as generated dialogue or art; a player-facing assistant is different again. Whether a use is welcome depends in part on its effect on quality, the amount of human oversight, its labor implications, and whether players can tell how content was made.
What the survey says about gamer attitudes
McKinsey’s 2025 report, The “attention equation”: Winning the right battles for consumer attention, draws on a survey of 7,000 consumers worldwide, including 3,000 in the United States. Its reported gamer responses show neither blanket rejection nor universal enthusiasm for generative AI in game development:

- HIGH-PRECISION 6,400 DPI OPTICAL SENSOR — Offers on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment through dedicated DPI buttons (reprogrammable) for gaming and creative work
- DURABLE MECHANICAL SWITCHES — Supports up to 10 million clicks
- RIDGED, RUBBERIZED SCROLL WHEEL FOR MAXIMUM ACCURACY — Small, tactile bumps increases grip and allows for more controlled scrolling in high-stakes gaming situations
- 5 PROGRAMMABLE BUTTONS — Allows for button remapping and assignment of complex macro functions through Razer Synapse
- PC GAMING PERIPHERALS BRAND IN THE U.S. — Source — Circana, Retail Tracking Service, U.S., Dollar Sales, Gaming Designed Mice, Keyboards, and PC Headsets, Jan. 2019- Dec. 2023 combined
- One-quarter said generative AI should not be used at all in video game development.
- 30 percent favored its use if it did not result in job losses.
- 15 percent favored its use for less-important game elements.
- 15 percent favored its use across all aspects of games if it resulted in better-quality gameplay.
Those categories point to conditional views: some respondents tied support to employment, the importance of the content, or improved gameplay. They are not a direct vote on Tan’s claim, and they do not justify saying gamers as a group love AI. McKinsey’s 2025 report
What Razer’s AI projects show—and what they do not
Razer’s announcements illustrate its strategy, but a company’s investment is not evidence of player approval or a proven improvement to games. At CES on January 6, 2026, Razer described Project AVA as an animated AI desk companion evolved from an earlier esports-coach concept, and said it was available for reservation in the United States at that time. The announcement also introduced the Forge AI Developer Workstation and open-source AIKit for local-first AI development. These examples should not be confused with evidence that every concept is a generally available product. Razer’s CES 2026 announcement

In its February recap, Razer described the CES 2026 AVA prototype as a holographic desk companion with a 5.5-inch display and PC Vision Mode. Razer said the demonstration used xAI’s Grok model and that AVA was intended as a multi-model platform. Tan was quoted as saying, “We picked Grok because it currently has the best conversational personality… but AVA is an open platform.” Those are Razer’s descriptions of a prototype and its plans, not independent assessments of performance or availability beyond the dated reservation statement.
Razer’s Developer Portal lists AI Gamer Copilot and AI QA Copilot among its developer-focused offerings. That establishes that Razer markets these tools, not that their effectiveness has been independently measured. Razer Developer Portal

How to judge an AI feature in a game
Rather than treating “AI-powered” as a verdict, evaluate what the feature actually does:
- Function: Is it helping test or produce a game, coaching the player, or generating content the player experiences?
- Player impact: Does it measurably improve stability, playability, responsiveness, or quality—or is its presence mainly a marketing point?
- Creative control: Do people retain meaningful authorship and approval over artistic decisions?
- Labor: Is the tool assisting workers, changing staffing needs, or substituting for roles? Survey preferences alone do not establish a specific employment effect.
- Visibility: Can players tell when content was generated, and does that matter to their experience?
- Evidence: Is a claim a company description, an internal test, an independent evaluation, or a survey result? These types of evidence should not be treated as interchangeable.
Razer has also publicized QA Co-AI, which it described in an August 18, 2025 blog as a cloud plug-in for logging bugs and generating reproduction steps. Its performance figures were attributed to Digital Trends’ reporting of internal tests, not independent benchmarking; they therefore do not establish general results for game studios. Does the claim hold up?
Tan’s argument is plausible in a limited sense: a player may appreciate a more reliable or better-made game without caring which behind-the-scenes tools helped produce it. But that is not the same as endorsing every application of AI. The available survey results show conditional support alongside opposition, while Razer’s own comments reject poor generative output and emphasize developer assistance. The fairest reading is that acceptance depends on the use, the result, and what happens to the people making the game—not that gamers have already embraced AI across the board.
