The GeForce FX 5900 XT was a late-2003, AGP 8x graphics card in NVIDIA’s NV35-based GeForce FX 5900 family. Its listed specifications were a 390 MHz core, DDR memory on a 256-bit interface, and 22.4 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Those figures place it below the GeForce FX 5900 and 5900 Ultra on core clock and below the listed bandwidth of both; they do not establish game frame rates.

What the GeForce FX 5900 XT was

NVIDIA introduced the GeForce FX 5900 generation in May 2003, identifying its GPU design as NV35. The XT followed later: PC Watch’s retrospective chronology dates the model to December 2003 and lists it as an AGP 8x card built on TSMC’s 130 nm process. The original 5900 launch report discussed a wider 256-bit memory bus as a change in that generation’s design. GameSpot’s May 12, 2003 report concerns the initial 5900 design, not the later XT.

GeForce FX 5900 XT specifications

Specification GeForce FX 5900 XT
GPU family / code name GeForce FX 5900 / NV35
Listed date December 2003
Manufacturing process TSMC 130 nm
Host interface AGP 8x
Core clock 390 MHz
Memory type DDR
Memory interface 256-bit
Listed memory bandwidth 22.4 GB/s

These are model-level figures in PC Watch’s 2024 retrospective GPU chronology. The XT’s memory capacity should be checked against the exact partner-board model rather than assumed from the family name.

How it compared with the GeForce FX 5900 and 5900 Ultra

Model Listed core clock Listed memory bandwidth Memory interface
GeForce FX 5900 XT 390 MHz 22.4 GB/s 256-bit
GeForce FX 5900 400 MHz 27.2 GB/s 256-bit
GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 450 MHz 27.2 GB/s 256-bit

PC Watch lists the clocks and bandwidths in its 2024 comparison table; NVIDIA’s family overview describes the 256-bit interface. The numbers show a specifications gap: the XT has a lower listed core clock and bandwidth than the other two models. They are not measurements of performance in any particular game, driver, or test setup. Capacity is not established uniformly across these three model names.

Architecture and advertised features

NVIDIA’s June 2003 GeForce FX 5900 product overview advertised the family with the CineFX 2.0 engine, DirectX 9.0 pixel- and vertex-shader support, OpenGL 1.4, high-level shader-language support, a 256-bit memory interface, and UltraShadow. These are NVIDIA’s stated family features, not independent assessments of image quality or performance on the XT.

NVIDIA described UltraShadow as technology for shadow-intensive games, naming Doom III and Abducted as examples. The brochure documents what the company promoted for the family; it does not establish how a specific XT partner board performed in those games.

Memory capacity depended on the board

A 2004 CDRInfo search-result extract for the AOpen Aeolus FX 5900 XT identifies that particular board as having 128 MB DDR and a 256-bit memory architecture. Treat 128 MB as a documented example, not a guaranteed capacity for every FX 5900 XT card; check the board’s exact SKU and labeling.

Does the FX 5900 XT work in a modern PC?

The historical listing specifies AGP 8x, but that does not prove compatibility with a particular present-day motherboard. A compatibility answer depends on the exact board and system, including the motherboard’s supported graphics slots and firmware, the operating system, and whether usable drivers are available. The cited historical sources do not verify current driver support or operation in any specific modern PC.
