How to Fix Hearth and Hamlet Crashes, Freezes, and Launch Problems

If Hearth and Hamlet crashes, freezes while loading, or will not launch, first try the other renderer offered in Steam’s launch choices. If that does not help, verify the game files; on Windows, back up and then reset the game’s configuration file if needed. Update your graphics driver and check for memory pressure, too. These are troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed fixes: the developer’s reports describe different outcomes across systems.

1. Try the other renderer in Steam

When you start Hearth and Hamlet from Steam, choose the alternate renderer if Steam presents a launch-choice menu. The developer’s pinned Steam bug-report thread recommends trying Vulkan for crashes or graphical glitches; the post spells it “Vulcan,” but the renderer is Vulkan. The developer said it was more stable for some players, particularly on Linux. Several players reported improvement, while another said the Vulkan option would not load.

Use this as a quick diagnostic, not a promised repair or a measured success rate. Try the default and alternate choices separately, and note whether the game starts, loads further, or still crashes. If the alternate option will not launch, return to the default.

2. Verify the installed game files

Damaged or stale files are one possibility when a game stalls at loading or fails to start. The developer recommended verifying the game files for a Windows player with a loading problem.

Mighty Boards Hamlet: The Village Building Game
  • GROW a humble Hamlet into a bustling town.
  • BUILD YOUR VILLAGE: Hamlet features irregular shaped tiles that connect together without a grid to form a village that is completely different every time.
  • TILE PLACEMNENT organically creates interconnecting paths that the villagers use to transport resources across the village. This leads players to construct boards where no two games will ever feel the same.
  • PROVIDE FOR THE VILLAGE: Since the buildings are communal, this also creates a fluid economy, where players are always working hard to provide the village with the resources that are most needed.
  • EASY TO LEARN while providing a lot of depth, medium weight competitive village builder, irregular tile shapes, organic village growth.
  1. In Steam, open your Library.
  2. Right-click Hearth and Hamlet and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Let Steam finish, then try launching the game again.

This is also part of Steam Support’s general troubleshooting guidance; verification does not establish that file damage caused your particular problem.

3. Reset the Windows configuration file only if needed

If verifying files does not resolve a Windows launch or loading problem, the developer suggested deleting the game’s .cfg file in %APPDATA%Godotapp_userdataHearth and Hamlet. Resetting configuration may remove saved preferences, so back up the file or folder before changing it.

Hamlet: By The Lake Expansion – Expand Your Village with Lakeside Features – Mighty Boards
  • Hamlet is a medium weight competitive village builder where players are communally turning their hamlet into a bustling little town, by completing the construction of the church.
  • Hamlet features irregular shaped tiles that connect together without a grid to form a village that is completely different every time.
  • The tile placement organically creates interconnecting paths that the villagers use to access buildings.
  • Distance between buildings matters, as resources need to be transported from one building to another. This leads players to construct boards where no two games will ever feel the same.
  • Since the buildings are communal, this also creates a fluid economy, where players need to adapt to the emergent needs of their Hamlet.
  1. Close the game.
  2. In File Explorer’s address bar, enter %APPDATA%Godotapp_userdataHearth and Hamlet and press Enter.
  3. Copy the folder or its .cfg file to a safe backup location.
  4. Delete the original .cfg file, then launch the game to let it create fresh configuration.

If the folder or file is not present, do not delete unrelated files; move on to the remaining checks.

4. Update your graphics driver and compare your PC with the requirements

The developer also suggested updating the graphics-card driver for Windows launch and loading problems. Get driver updates from the graphics hardware maker or your PC manufacturer rather than relying on third-party driver utilities.

The Steam listing gives these Windows requirements:

Windows tier RAM Graphics
Minimum 8 GB GeForce GTX 650 with 2 GB VRAM or Radeon HD 7770 with 2 GB VRAM
Recommended 16 GB GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Radeon R7 260X, both listed with 2 GB VRAM

These are the game’s listed baselines, not a diagnosis or a guarantee of stable play. In its August 28, 2026 Patch 1.0.06 note, the developer raised recommended RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB, adding that 8 GB may still work but leaves less room for multitasking. Close unnecessary applications while testing if your system has limited memory.

5. Consider shared graphics memory and memory pressure

The developer has identified VRAM exhaustion or shared VRAM as a cause of some crashes, launch failures, and graphical glitches, especially on some laptops and, to a lesser extent, Steam Deck. That is a known issue in some cases, not an explanation for every crash.

The developer described Patch 1.0.05 as an initial effort to reduce crashes and visual problems on weaker PCs. Patch 1.0.07, dated September 5, 2026, reported that hundreds of changes cut VRAM use by about 1.1 GB, with the aim of improving stability, particularly on lower-spec hardware. This is the developer’s reported patch figure, not an independent measurement or proof that every memory-related problem is resolved.

6. If the game still fails, use Steam’s general checklist

Steam Support’s general launch troubleshooting recommends restarting the computer, checking the game’s requirements, verifying its files, updating the operating system and drivers, and disabling nonessential software that might interfere with Steam. These are general Steam suggestions, not fixes specifically tested by the Hearth and Hamlet developer. Try one change at a time so you can tell whether it affects the problem.

7. Report a reproducible problem with useful details

If none of these steps helps, report the issue in the developer’s pinned Steam bug-report thread; the developer also points players to the game’s Discord for reports that may include screenshots and save files. Include:
