For ordinary flat-screen PC gaming, the Xbox Wireless Controller is the safer documented choice: Microsoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility, and Valve lists Xbox controller families among Steam Input’s supported device categories. Steam Frame Controllers are built for a different job—tracked VR interaction with gamepad-style controls—so do not assume they can be bought or used as a headset-free Windows gamepad.
What each controller is designed to do
Steam Frame Controllers: gamepad controls plus VR tracking
Valve describes Steam Frame Controllers as combining conventional gamepad capabilities with VR-focused input, including touch states, grip buttons, capacitive finger tracking, and six-degree-of-freedom spatial tracking. Their split gamepad layout is designed to work with the Steam library. Valve also says compatibility modes are available and that tailoring support to an individual game can provide a better experience. Valve’s Steam Frame Controllers documentation
That combination makes them distinct from a conventional gamepad: they can provide tracked input for VR as well as gamepad-style controls. It does not establish that every flat-screen game supports their additional inputs or that they work as a standalone PC controller.
Xbox Wireless Controller: a conventional PC gamepad
Microsoft lists the Xbox Wireless Controller for Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. For a Windows PC, Microsoft documents Bluetooth wireless connectivity; the controller also includes Xbox Wireless technology. Does an Xbox controller work with Steam games?
Valve’s Steam Input documentation includes Xbox 360 and Xbox One controller types among its supported device categories, alongside Steam Controller, Switch Pro, and DirectInput devices. That is good evidence for using Xbox controller families with Steam, but it is not a guarantee that every game—or a game launched through another store or launcher—will support the controller in exactly the same way. Can you use Steam Frame Controllers on PC without the headset?
The reviewed Valve material does not confirm that Steam Frame Controllers can be purchased separately or paired directly with a Windows PC without the Steam Frame headset. Valve’s product page describes a dedicated 6 GHz adapter for Steam Frame streaming, which explains part of the headset ecosystem; it does not establish headset-free controller connectivity. So if your plan is to buy the controllers as a standalone flat-screen PC gamepad, treat that use as unverified unless Valve’s current product listing or documentation expressly confirms it. This uncertainty does not apply to the Xbox controller’s documented Windows compatibility.

Battery and power information
Microsoft advertises up to 40 hours for the Xbox Wireless Controller using AA batteries. This is Microsoft’s published product figure, not an independently measured or guaranteed runtime: Microsoft says its testing used preproduction units and warns that battery life varies with accessories and usage. Microsoft also lists an Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C accessory; check that an accessory fits the specific controller revision before buying it. The reviewed material does not establish a Steam Frame Controller runtime, so the runtime figure for a different Valve controller should not be applied to it. Bottom line: Choose an Xbox Wireless Controller for the better-documented route to conventional PC gamepad play. Choose Steam Frame Controllers for tracked interaction as part of the Steam Frame VR ecosystem, not on the assumption that they are an independently compatible replacement for a standard PC gamepad.
