Save from inside the game before you leave Xbox Cloud Gaming: use its manual save option, or reach a safe checkpoint if it saves automatically. Keep the stream open until the game finishes saving. On supported Xbox PC and handheld experiences, also check the Game Save Sync Indicator and wait until your cloud save is synced.
Save your game before closing the stream
- Use the game’s save option if it has one. Open the in-game menu and choose its save command. Xbox Cloud Gaming does not have one universal save button; the available method depends on the title.
- If the game saves automatically, reach a safe point. Wait for its saving icon, animation, or message to finish before moving on.
- Leave the session open while saving completes. Don’t close the browser tab, app, TV app, or stream while the game is showing that it is saving.
- Check cloud sync where the indicator is supported. In Xbox PC and supported handheld experiences, wait for the Game Save Sync Indicator to show that the save is synced before powering down or switching devices.
Xbox says streamed games use cloud saves only and may have limited game-save storage. That means you should not expect a local save file from the cloud session. See the Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ.
Can you continue on another device?
Xbox describes Cloud Gaming as a way to continue progress across devices, and its Xbox PC app page says players can play across devices with their game saves. Whether a particular title supports the same save across your devices, and when it becomes available, can vary. On PC or a supported handheld, the Game Save Sync Indicator provides visibility into cloud-save status; Xbox announced it on January 21, 2026. Do not assume that indicator is available in a phone browser, TV app, or on every device.
If the session ends unexpectedly
Relaunch the game with the same Xbox account and let it load its cloud save. Progress made after the game’s last completed save may not be recoverable; Xbox does not promise recovery for unsaved actions. If you need to know whether a title uses manual saves, checkpoints, or autosave, check that game’s own instructions.

Is there a set warning or countdown?
The reviewed Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ does not give a universal session-ending warning interval or standard idle timeout. It also does not define a save command that applies to every game. Don’t count on having a particular number of minutes when a session is about to end. Internet-speed guidance is not a signal that a game has finished saving.
