Check again on the day of your visit, then follow posted signs and ask a lifeguard before entering the ocean. Conditions change quickly, so an online report is a planning aid—not a guarantee of safety.
Check a specific beach’s current conditions
Start with HawaiiBeachSafety.com, which Hawaii Ocean Safety directs visitors to for conditions at lifeguarded beaches. The state says the partner service updates conditions every 15 minutes based on NWS forecasts. That cadence applies to the beach-conditions service; it does not mean every alert or hazard feed is updated on the same schedule, and conditions may change after a report is posted.
Look up the beach you plan to visit rather than relying on a general island-wide impression. Review its hazard rating, closure status and reported hazards. If comparing beaches, also consider whether a lifeguard will be on duty when you expect to swim and whether the conditions suit your ability, health and planned activity.
Check weather, coastal alerts and water quality
A beach-level report does not replace broader weather and coastal alerts. Use Hawaii Ocean Safety’s weather guidance to reach the NWS forecast for Hawaii and check active watches, warnings and advisories relevant to your island and coast. Check the local forecast on the day of your visit, even if you checked while planning.

Also look for water-quality warnings. Heavy rain and runoff can turn coastal water brown. Hawaii Department of Health explains that a Brown Water Advisory (BWA) is issued when field staff judge there is a strong likelihood of land-based pollutants entering coastal waters and an increased possibility of exceeding the applicable beach action value. Hawaii Ocean Safety advises staying out of the ocean when water-quality warning signs are posted.
During severe weather, stay out of the ocean and away from beaches and shorelines until local authorities say it is safe. A tsunami watch or warning is reason to stay away from the ocean and shoreline until officials give the all-clear. If you feel a strong earthquake near the ocean, move inland and to higher ground immediately; a locally generated tsunami may leave little time for further instructions.

Understand Hawaii’s beach hazard ratings
Hawaii Ocean Safety lists these ratings for lifeguarded beaches. A lower rating is not a personal safety assessment, and none overrides a closure or a lifeguard’s instruction.

| Black: Extreme Hazard | Extreme hazard, including risks from strong current, surge and shorebreak. | Swimmers should stay out of the ocean. |
| Closed | The beach is closed. | Do not enter; follow closure instructions. |
See Hawaii Ocean Safety’s beach hazard ratings for the state’s descriptions. A rating is not a guarantee that conditions will remain unchanged or that a beach is appropriate for every swimmer.

Read signs and ask a lifeguard when you arrive
At the beach, treat local signs, announcements and lifeguard instructions as actionable information. Signs may warn of dangerous shorebreak, strong currents, high surf, no swimming, no diving, sudden drop-offs, sharp coral, waves breaking on a ledge or shark sightings. Read the Hawaii Ocean Safety warning-sign guide if you are unsure what a sign means.
Ask the lifeguard about current conditions and hazards before entering the water. Hawaii Ocean Safety notes that ocean conditions can change quickly and that the absence of a warning sign does not establish that conditions are safe. Follow any closure, announcement or instruction to stay out of the water.

Use a visit-day decision check
- Before choosing a beach: Check its current conditions and hazard rating on HawaiiBeachSafety.com. Confirm closure status and whether a lifeguard will be on duty at your planned time.
- Before leaving for the coast: Check the NWS local forecast and active watches, warnings and advisories for the island and coast. Look for water-quality notices, including Brown Water Advisories.
- At the beach: Read signs, listen for announcements and ask the lifeguard about current hazards. Do not enter if the beach is closed or officials or lifeguards advise staying out.
- If a serious threat applies: Follow official instructions over a beach report or travel plan. For a strong earthquake felt near the ocean, move inland and uphill immediately; for a tsunami alert or severe weather, remain away from the shoreline until authorities say it is safe.
When weighing beach options, do not reduce the choice to a single rating. Consider the reported hazards, weather and surf exposure, water quality, lifeguard availability, and how your swimming ability, health and familiarity with Hawaii’s ocean fit the conditions.
