To check whether a Nintendo Switch game works on Switch 2, search for its exact title on Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility page, then read any notes about in-game issues or controller requirements. Compatibility can vary by game and may change as Nintendo tests titles and releases updates, so check the current listing before buying or playing.
Check a game’s compatibility on Nintendo’s official page
- Open Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility page.
- Enter the game’s exact title in the search box.
- Open or read the result’s details. Look for notes about partial functionality, known issues, or controller requirements—not just whether the title appears in the results.
Nintendo advises checking compatibility before purchasing a Switch game for use on Switch 2. Its page explains that differences between the consoles can mean a title is unsupported or does not work fully. Nintendo also says testing and updates may increase the number of supported games over time.

Understand what the result means
A game may be playable but still have a known issue. Nintendo’s compatibility materials describe examples including slowdown, screen distortion, or behavior that differs from the Nintendo Switch version. Read the game-specific note to see whether the issue matters for how you plan to play.
A missing search result is not proof that a game is compatible or incompatible. Nintendo UK says games available only physically or discontinued on Nintendo eShop appear in search results only when testing found issues. For a third-party-published game, Nintendo recommends asking the publisher for specific compatibility information.

Check for controller and accessory requirements
Some games cannot be played using the included Joy-Con 2 controllers. Nintendo identifies those cases on its compatibility page; original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can be paired wirelessly when needed. Certain games also depend on their accessories: for example, Ring Fit Adventure uses the Ring-Con, and Nintendo Labo Robot Kit relies on its associated kit. Nintendo notes that Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to those accessories.
These requirements are separate from basic game-card or digital-game compatibility. If a listing mentions a controller or accessory limitation, check what you already own and whether the game’s intended way of playing is available to you.

Compatibility is not the same as a Switch 2 Edition
A compatible Nintendo Switch game is not automatically a Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo describes Switch 2 Editions as separate software editions that can add features such as improved graphics or gameplay made specifically for Switch 2. Some eligible Switch games also offer a paid upgrade pack. Check the game’s product information to distinguish ordinary compatibility from access to those additional features.
Can you use a physical or digital Switch game?
Switch 2 accepts compatible Nintendo Switch game cards. For digital games, Nintendo’s virtual game cards can be loaded or ejected across linked Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles. These formats do not guarantee that every title works fully: check the individual game’s compatibility entry and notes.

When to check again
Compatibility status is not a permanent guarantee. Nintendo says further testing and updates may add supported titles, while some games may take longer to become playable, have partial functionality issues, or remain unsupported. Search again close to the time you plan to buy or play, especially if you previously checked before an update.
