Start with how you want to play
Choose Switch 2 for play beyond the TV
Switch 2 is the only hybrid in this group: its built-in screen supports handheld play, it can stand in tabletop mode, and its dock connects it to a TV. Nintendo announced the system on April 2, 2025, and released it on June 5, 2025. That flexibility is the clearest reason to choose it over a living-room console. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications and announcement describe its screen, docked output, and release.

Choose PS5 or Xbox for a TV-first setup
If you expect to play primarily on a television, decide first which games matter to you, then compare the exact console model, display expectations, disc needs, storage, and services. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are home consoles; this comparison does not make them interchangeable, nor does it identify one as a blanket winner.
Compare the games you will actually play
Make a shortlist of games you intend to play rather than choosing from brand reputation alone. Check which console each title supports, whether it is available in your region, and whether the edition or add-ons you want are included or sold separately. Exclusive games and the friends you play with can outweigh a difference in resolution or storage.

Subscription catalogs and terms change over time and by region. Check the current local lineups and costs for Nintendo Switch Online and Xbox Game Pass, and any relevant PlayStation service, before treating a subscription as part of a console’s value. The official specifications cited here do not establish current catalog contents or comparable subscription prices.
Understand what the display specifications mean
Switch 2: screen and docked output
Nintendo specifies a 7.9-inch LCD with a 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. In handheld and tabletop modes, the maximum resolution is 1920×1080. Through the dock, supported games and displays can use output up to 3840×2160 (4K) at 60 fps, or up to 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 at 120 fps. These are maximum output capabilities, not a promise that every game renders at those resolutions or frame rates; the game and display both matter. Nintendo’s specifications provide the stated limits.
Xbox Series X and Series S
Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K and offers models with a UHD Blu-ray disc drive. Series S is disc-free, designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. Both support up to 120 fps where a game and display support it. A console’s advertised output or maximum frame rate should not be read as a guarantee for every title. See Microsoft’s Xbox console comparison for model distinctions and qualifications.
PS5 specifications are not a head-to-head test
Sony’s manual for PS5 CFI-21XX lists an AMD Zen 2 CPU, an RDNA-based graphics engine, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and a 10-teraflop GPU specification. These are hardware specifications, not measured results comparing PS5 with a particular Switch 2 or Xbox game. The manual also notes that technical capabilities depend on the model and connected display. Sony’s PS5 manuals are the source for those model-specific specifications.

Decide whether you need physical games
Disc use can narrow the choice quickly. Xbox Series S is disc-free, while Xbox Series X is available with a UHD Blu-ray drive. Check the exact Series X model before buying: Microsoft lists different configurations, including 1 TB and 2 TB SSD models. For PS5, verify the exact model and disc-drive configuration offered in your market rather than assuming every listing includes a drive.
Discs may matter if you buy used games, borrow or lend physical copies, or already own a compatible collection. A disc drive does not mean every game or feature is available on disc, so check the specific release. Switch 2’s cited specifications describe its hybrid form and storage, but do not establish a comparable disc-library option; check the exact games and editions you plan to buy.
Check storage and compatibility before switching
Storage and expansion
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal UFS storage and supports compatible microSD Express cards for expansion. Nintendo cautions that expansion uses compatible microSD Express cards; an ordinary microSD card is not a substitute. Card capacity and price are separate purchase considerations, so include them if you expect to keep many downloaded games installed. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications describe the storage requirement.
For Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft lists a separately sold Storage Expansion Card that matches the consoles’ custom SSD performance, as well as USB external HDD support. Confirm which games can be played from a particular storage device and check local pricing before comparing expansion costs. Microsoft’s comparison page describes these options.

Moving from an original Switch
Do not assume every original Switch game works perfectly on Switch 2. Nintendo says some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible, and directs players to title-specific compatibility information. Before upgrading, check the games you care about most against Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare total cost in your country
There is no reliable current three-way price comparison in the official specifications cited here: Nintendo’s announcement included Japan launch pricing, Xbox options and prices vary by market and retailer, and a matching current PS5 retail price is not established. Do not treat launch pricing as current or compare a bundle with a bare console as though they were equivalent.
When checking local retailers, compare the exact model and what is in the box: storage capacity, disc drive, included game or accessories, warranty, and any expansion card or other purchase you know you will need. Then add the cost of the games and subscriptions you expect to use. Prices and bundles change, so verify them in your country at the time you buy.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Pick Switch 2 if handheld or tabletop play is important, and its games match your interests.
- Compare PS5 and Xbox Series X if you want a TV-focused console and need to decide based on games, display, disc use, storage, and local total cost.
- Consider Xbox Series S if a disc-free console designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling fits your setup and budget; check its game and storage needs against the Series X before deciding.
- Before upgrading from original Switch, verify compatibility for the specific games you want to keep playing.
- Before checkout, confirm the exact model, included accessories or games, local price, and any storage or subscription costs you intend to incur.
