How NHL Goalie Rotations and Starting-Goalie Decisions Work

NHL goalie starts are decided game by game, not by a league-wide rotation rule. Coaches weigh performance, health, workload, schedule, stakes and each goalie’s response to rest.

There is no NHL-wide rule that requires teams to alternate goalies or follow a fixed rotation. Coaches choose each starter based on the goalies’ performance and condition, workload, schedule, travel, game importance and individual response to rest. The goaltending coach evaluates the options and recommends a plan; the head coach makes the lineup decision.

Is there a fixed NHL goalie rotation?

No. A rotation describes how a team distributes starts, not a league-mandated schedule. A club might split a back-to-back, alternate two goalies for a stretch, give one goalie a larger share, or change its plan as health, form and schedule change. Seattle Kraken coach Dave Hakstol described the back-to-back pattern this way: “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” That is a common approach, not a rule requiring every team to split those games. Kraken/NHL.com coverage of goalie workload also notes that tandem use has varied over time.

There is no universal percentage split, workload threshold or public formula that predicts who will start. The practical question is which goalie gives the team the best fit for this game while accounting for what comes next.

What goes into choosing a starter?

Coaches weigh several connected factors rather than relying on the previous game’s box score alone. NHL goalie coach David Marcoux has identified standings, travel, schedule, previous and expected workload, and injuries as considerations. Staff also assess performance and a goalie’s physical and mental state. NHL.com’s reporting on whether to play or rest a starting goalie describes this as a situational judgment.

  • Form and consistency: Recent play matters, but a single strong or poor result does not automatically settle the next start.
  • Health and recovery: Coaches consider injuries, games recently played and the workload expected in the coming stretch.
  • Schedule and travel: Back-to-backs, road trips, late arrivals and recovery time can affect which goalie is ready.
  • Standings and game stakes: A team pursuing a playoff place may lean more heavily on its most consistent option; after securing a berth, it may have more room to schedule a rest start.
  • Individual rhythm: Some goalies prefer frequent starts, while others benefit from more rest and focused practice.
  • Depth and readiness: The plan depends on whether another goalie is prepared to start and how the organization can manage workload around the game.

These inputs are not published as a weighted algorithm. The sources do not establish a numerical cutoff at which a goalie must be rested.

How do back-to-back games affect the decision?

Playing on consecutive nights makes recovery an obvious consideration, so teams often use the second goalie for one game. But the performance evidence does not support treating a split as a guaranteed advantage or a universal requirement.

Seattle Kraken writer Alison Lukan reported that a 2013 analysis by Eric Tulsky found a just-over-11-percent reduction in save percentage for a goalie playing both nights of a back-to-back. Lukan also reported that later analyses by Andrew Thomas of SportsMEDIA Technology and Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic found a smaller effect. The older figure is a historical estimate, not settled evidence of a fixed NHL-wide penalty. Read the Kraken’s account of the analyses and workload context.

Coaches therefore balance the demands of consecutive games against the available goalies’ health, performance and readiness. A team may split the pair, but the schedule alone does not determine the choice.

How do goalie coach and head coach divide the decision?

The goalie coach evaluates the goalies and gives the head coach a recommendation; the head coach decides who starts. The goalie coach’s work can include technical and mental support, video and analytics, scouting and communication about a goalie’s condition. NHL goalie coach Mitch Korn summarized the distinction: “The head coach’s job is to pick who the starter is. My job is to give him the best information and knowledge on what I thought and then the head coach is the hammer as far as deciding who is going to play.” NHL.com’s report on how goalie coaches’ roles have changed discusses that division of labor.

What rotation patterns do teams use?

With two viable goalies, a team can favor one, share starts more evenly, or adjust game by game. Which approach makes sense depends on the same factors that shape an individual start, particularly schedule, standings, health and how each goalie responds to rest.

Pattern How it works What can influence it
Larger share for one goalie The team gives its leading or more consistent option more starts. Game importance, standings, performance, health and the next stretch of games.
Alternating tandem Two goalies share starts in a recurring pattern, though not necessarily for the whole season. Both goalies’ readiness, schedule density and preference for frequent play or rest.
Game-by-game adjustment The team changes the plan in response to conditions rather than following a set sequence. Back-to-backs, travel, workload, injuries, performance and available depth.

These are practical patterns, not formal NHL categories or a ranking of what teams should choose.

Why can rest and rhythm point in different directions?

Rest can help a goalie recover, but a long gap between games is not automatically ideal for everyone. A goalie who benefits from frequent action may prefer to stay in the rotation; another may perform better with added rest and preparation. Teams have to consider the individual rather than assume one schedule suits every goalie.

A 2021 NHL.com report offered contrasting examples. Vegas alternated Marc-Andre Fleury and Robin Lehner for 21 consecutive games, a team-specific pattern during a condensed schedule. Fleury said the rhythm meant he did not have to wait long between appearances, while coach Pete DeBoer said both goalies were getting in two games a week. Other teams in the same playoff context leaned on a top goalie instead. The Vegas run illustrates one workable arrangement at that time, not a current recommendation or a standard playoff rotation. NHL.com’s 2021 report on goalie rest before the playoffs describes those choices.

How can teams manage workload beyond choosing a starter?

Starting less often is only one way to protect recovery. NHL reporting describes teams giving a non-starting goalie a full night off, arranging travel so a goalie can rest before a start, using three goalies, and limiting high-workload segments in practice. These are reported approaches rather than practices followed by every team.

A historical example shows how practice duties can be shared: NHL.com reported that Devan Dubnyk started 38 consecutive games for Minnesota in 2014–15, while Darcy Kuemper and Niklas Backstrom handled most practices during that stretch. That account illustrates workload management around a demanding run; it does not establish that such a run is optimal. NHL.com’s report on goalie workload and practice strategies covers the example and other methods.

Does the emergency backup goalie affect normal starter choices?

No. NHL.com reported on October 2, 2026, that every team must roster an emergency backup goalie (EBUG) for the 2026–27 season. The report says the EBUG dresses as No. 00, practices and travels with the team, and must meet eligibility restrictions: the goalie must not have played an NHL game under a standard player contract, played more than 80 professional games, or played professional hockey in the previous three seasons. This policy concerns emergency availability; it does not set the regular rotation or determine which of a team’s regular goalies starts. NHL.com’s report on the 2026–27 EBUG requirement outlines the policy.
