NFL teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff, so an earlier injury report is not final confirmation.
Where to check a player’s game status
Start with the NFL.com game-day inactive report. It is organized by matchup, with each team’s inactive players listed under its game. Find the player’s team and confirm that you are looking at the correct opponent and kickoff—not a report from another week.
If the league report has not appeared or updated yet, check the player’s team-owned website or official channels. Teams submit inactive designations, and the NFL’s injury policy also requires teams to report and communicate status updates. Give priority to the latest official update tied to that game.
How to check, step by step
- Identify the matchup and scheduled kickoff. Make sure the player is on the team you expect and locate that specific game. NFL inactive reports are organized by matchup.
- Open the NFL.com inactive report near game time. Look beneath the player’s team name and check whether the player appears on that game’s inactive list.
- If needed, check the team’s official channels. Use the team’s own site or accounts for a club update if the league report is not yet available.
- Refresh close to kickoff. NFL Support says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before the scheduled start. A report checked earlier may not reflect the final game-day designation.
What the different status labels mean
Inactive for this game
A player listed as inactive on the report for that matchup has been designated inactive for that game. This is a game-specific status; it does not establish the player’s status for a later week.

Out, Doubtful, or Questionable
These are game-status designations in the NFL injury-report process, not substitutes for checking the final game-day inactive list. Treat them as pregame information and consult the matchup’s inactive report for the listed inactive decision.
Practice participation
The weekly injury report records practice participation separately from game status. Full, limited, or no participation describes practice; it does not by itself announce that the player will be active or inactive on game day. NFL.com presents Practice Status and Game Status in separate columns on its injury report.

Roster membership
A player appearing on a roster page is not confirmation that the player is active for a particular game. NFL roster administration’s Active/Inactive List and game-day inactive designations are distinct concepts. Use the game-specific report rather than roster membership to answer the game-day question.
Not listed on an injury report
Absence from a weekly injury report is not the same as a positive confirmation that a player is active. Check the specific game’s inactive report and look for any newer team update.

Why timing matters
NFL Support’s “Auto-Swap Inactives” guidance states: “Players are designated ‘Inactive’ by their NFL teams about 90 minutes before the game is scheduled to start if they are unable to play.” The league’s 2017 NFL Injury Report Policy also describes a 90-minute inactive-list meeting. That policy document is historical, so for a current decision rely on the latest NFL or team report.
The weekly injury report and the game-day inactive report are different reporting stages. A player’s status can change after the weekly report, and an old screenshot, cached page, fantasy projection, or early-week label may not reflect the latest decision. Recheck the official report close to the game.
