For the next scoring period, first confirm the quarterback’s status and your lineup deadline. Then check which quarterbacks you can actually add, starting with the injured player’s NFL backup, and compare candidates by expected playing time, current news, matchup, your league’s scoring, and the cost or likelihood of acquiring them. The backup is a useful first check—not an automatic start.
1. Confirm the injury news and your deadline
Check the latest team and player news, then verify the lineup deadline and player-status rules in your fantasy platform. NFL.com’s 2025 Official Rules say NFL.com Fantasy managers may change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start. That rule applies to NFL.com Fantasy; other platforms and leagues may set different rules or deadlines.
2. Find quarterbacks your league will let you add
Check both the free-agent pool and the waiver list, along with your roster limits. NFL.com defines the waiver wire as the process for getting players who are not currently on a roster in your fantasy league in its beginner’s guide to fantasy football. A player who is already rostered is not available for an ordinary add; a waiver claim may be needed instead.
Acquisition rules affect whether you can get a candidate, not whether he is the best football choice. Depending on your league, waiver priority or FAAB (free-agent acquisition budget) may determine who gets a player. An add may also require dropping someone to make room. Check your league’s process, budget or priority, roster space, and claim deadline before submitting a move.

3. Start with the injured quarterback’s backup, then compare
NFL.com’s in-season roster-management guidance recommends looking to the injured player’s backup, noting that “One of the primary uses of the waiver wire is to replace injured players.” Treat that as a sensible place to begin your search, not a guarantee that the backup is the strongest option. Compare him with every quarterback your league allows you to add.
4. Compare candidates for this scoring period
- Starting likelihood and playing time: Assess whether the player is expected to start and whether his role is likely to last for the period you need. Do not assume a backup will play simply because he is on the roster.
- Current news and offensive role: Look for recent injury and team updates, and consider what is known about the player’s role in the offense. Recheck news before the deadline because availability and role can change.
- Matchup and game context: Use current matchup information as one part of the decision. Do not treat a matchup label as a substitute for a credible expectation that the quarterback will play.
- League scoring: Compare candidates under your league’s actual scoring settings. Passing and rushing production may be valued differently across leagues, so a ranking for another format may not match your needs.
- Acquisition cost: Consider waiver priority or the FAAB you are willing to spend, and whether the likely benefit for this scoring period justifies using that resource.
Use up-to-date player news and rankings to support the comparison. No specific quarterback, current projection, or matchup recommendation can be established without week-specific information.
