There is no universal graphics winner you can determine from the consoles’ specification sheets. Nintendo lists Switch 2 output options up to 4K at 60 fps, while Sony’s original PlayStation 4 announcement lists a GPU rated at 1.84 teraflops. Those figures describe different things; neither establishes how a particular game looks or runs. For a meaningful comparison, use the same game and comparable scenes, identify the console mode, and separate a game’s rendering resolution from the signal sent to a screen.
What the published specifications actually tell you
Nintendo’s 2025 Switch 2 specifications describe the console’s display and output capabilities. Sony’s 2013 announcement describes the original PS4’s GPU and memory, alongside Sony’s platform-level goal of enabling smooth 1080p HD games. These are useful hardware facts, but they are not matched game benchmarks.

| Nintendo Switch 2 | Built-in 7.9-inch LCD, 1920×1080, HDR10 support and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz (Nintendo, 2025) | The handheld display’s resolution and listed display features | The internal rendering resolution or frame rate of any particular game |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | TV output up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps; up to 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 output selections (Nintendo, 2025) | Maximum system output modes | That a game natively renders at those resolutions or reaches those frame rates |
| Original PlayStation 4 | 1.84 teraflops; 18 GPU compute units; 8 GB unified GDDR5 memory (Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., 2013) | Sony’s published hardware figures for the standard PS4 | A direct visual-quality score or performance result against Switch 2 |
| Original PlayStation 4 | Sony described smooth 1080p HD as a platform capability in its 2013 launch announcement | Sony’s stated design aim for the platform | A guarantee that each game renders natively at 1080p or maintains a fixed frame rate |

Why 4K output does not mean every Switch 2 game renders at 4K
A console’s output resolution is the format of the signal it sends to a display. A game’s rendering resolution is the resolution at which it draws its image before any scaling or reconstruction. A game can render below the selected output resolution and then upscale or reconstruct the image; it can also change its internal resolution dynamically. Nintendo’s maximum 3840×2160 TV output therefore means the system can send a 4K signal in supported output modes, not that every game produces a native 4K image.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The same distinction matters for frame rate. Nintendo lists output modes up to 120 fps at 1080p or 1440p, but the developer controls a game’s frame-rate target and how consistently it performs. A listed output mode is not a promise that a given title reaches or sustains that rate.
Compare the same game in the same context
A useful graphics comparison controls for the factors that can change the result. Start with the same title, matching versions where possible, and a comparable scene. Record the game mode and the Switch 2 use case: handheld or docked. Handheld play uses the built-in 1920×1080 screen; docked play sends a signal to a TV, where output settings and screen size differ. Do not compare a handheld image directly with a PS4 image on a large TV and treat the difference as a hardware-only result.

- Rendering and output: Record internal resolution separately from output resolution. Note any dynamic resolution, upscaling or reconstruction if reliable evidence identifies it.
- Frame rate and stability: Distinguish a target from measured performance. Note drops, uneven pacing or other instability only when directly observed or supported by a credible, version-specific analysis.
- Visual settings and effects: Compare details such as texture quality, shadows, lighting, draw distance and effects rather than reducing image quality to a single resolution number.
- Viewing conditions: Use the same display size and similar viewing distance for TV comparisons. Treat Switch 2 handheld viewing as a separate context.
- Other performance measures: Include load times only when a direct comparison or cited benchmark supports the claim.
For each game-specific conclusion, identify the game, update or version, mode, and evidence behind the comparison. The manufacturer specifications cited here do not provide matched Switch 2-versus-PS4 results for individual games.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you say Switch 2 is more powerful than PS4?
Not responsibly from these figures alone. Switch 2’s maximum display-output figures and PS4’s GPU teraflop rating are different kinds of measurements, so placing them side by side does not establish which system renders a particular game faster or at higher quality. A defensible answer needs comparable results for the same title and scene, with mode, resolution, frame-rate behavior and visual settings identified.

The PS4 reference here is the standard model described in Sony’s original announcement, not PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro is a different model and should not be silently substituted in a comparison titled around PS4. Nintendo also notes that Switch 2 accepts Switch 2 and original Switch game cards, but game-card compatibility is separate from a graphics or performance comparison.
