Best Linux Settings for Low-Latency Steam Remote Play

There is no universal Linux Remote Play preset. Use Steam’s overlay to isolate network, encoding, or frame-rate problems, then change one setting at a time.

There is no single best Linux preset for Steam Remote Play: latency depends on the network, game frame rate, and the host’s capture and encoding path. Start with the host connected to the router by Ethernet, turn on Steam’s performance overlay, and change one setting at a time. Then test hardware encoding and tune bandwidth or resolution only when the measurements point to a bottleneck.

Start with a stable network

Steam’s strongest general recommendation is to connect the host computer directly to the router by Ethernet. A wired host avoids one major source of wireless contention; Steam also warns that simultaneous Wi-Fi transmission by both the PC and streaming client can interfere with the stream. If the host is already wired, focus on the client’s connection and the condition of the wireless link rather than buying another cable. See Steam’s suggested network settings.

If either device must use Wi-Fi

  • Prefer 5 GHz when signal strength is good. Steam recommends 802.11ac, or 802.11n on 5 GHz as a next-best option.
  • Place the device closer to the router and reduce obstructions where practical. Distance, walls, congestion, and radio-frequency noise can undermine a fast connection.
  • Test a less congested channel and pause other high-bandwidth traffic while diagnosing stutter.
  • Steam suggests trying 40 MHz channel width where suitable and then 80 MHz on 802.11ac. Wider channels can offer more throughput but are more sensitive to distance and RF noise, so keep the narrower setting if it is more stable.

Measure before changing settings

Enable Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay on the client before tuning. Watch for large spikes in network timing—the cyan line in Steam’s guidance—and note when they occur. Test in the same game and scene after each change so that you can tell whether the change helped rather than simply shifting the workload.

Use the overlay as a diagnostic, not just a score: network timing spikes point toward the link, while low streaming frame rate can instead come from the game or host encoding. Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance describes using the performance display to investigate network-related problems.

Test Linux hardware encoding on your actual setup

In Steam, open Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options. Enable hardware encoding for the available GPU, then inspect the overlay’s details to confirm which encoder Steam is using. Compare it with hardware encoding disabled using the same game and scene; don’t assume that either mode is always faster.

Valve’s November 2, 2021 Steam client update documents Linux VA-API hardware encoding for AMD and Intel, and says the host option can disable AMD/Intel hardware encoding. That establishes support in the documented client update, not identical behavior across every Linux distribution, GPU, driver, compositor, or Steam package. If enabling it causes instability or an encoder path fails, compare with it off.

Capture-path details

The same Valve update describes DMABUF PipeWire capture support, a 32-bit libgbm.so.1 requirement, the -pipewire-dmabuf launch option, and PipeWire capture up to 4K. These are implementation details, not settings every Linux installation needs to change. The update does not establish universal support across all desktop and driver combinations, so use the capture path available and working on your system.

Tune bandwidth gradually

Steam’s troubleshooting method is to begin at 3 Mbit/s and raise the bandwidth limit in small steps until hitches appear, then return to the last stable level. Treat 3 Mbit/s as a diagnostic starting point—not a general recommendation or a guarantee for a particular resolution or refresh rate. Make each comparison under the same conditions, since a limit that works in one game or scene may not suit another.

When the stream’s frame rate is low, reduce host load

Steam says low streaming frame rate is commonly caused by low game frame rate or slow encoding on the host, rather than necessarily by the network. First check whether the game itself is maintaining its frame rate and whether the overlay indicates a host-side encoding problem.

Try a lower resolution

As a diagnostic, limit the stream to 1280×720 and compare responsiveness and smoothness. If needed, lower the game’s render resolution as a separate test. This trades image detail for a lighter capture, encoding, and network workload; keep the highest setting that remains stable on your setup.

Test V-sync only if relevant

Steam’s general Remote Play FAQ also suggests turning off V-sync as a troubleshooting option. Test it in the game where you see the problem rather than treating it as a mandatory Linux-wide setting. Steam’s low-framerate troubleshooting page describes slow game frame rate and host encoding as common causes and suggests trying a lower resolution.

Use router prioritization only when it addresses a real bottleneck

Steam supports prioritizing streaming traffic through Remote Play’s advanced host options and recommends considering router QoS or device-priority settings for the host and client. These controls are most relevant when other devices or applications compete for the connection. Update router firmware where applicable and test with other high-bandwidth traffic paused before deciding that new equipment is needed.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

If the wireless environment or router is still the limiting factor, a 5 GHz-capable router with QoS or device prioritization may help, but check placement, channel congestion, and firmware first. Steam’s older Steam Link hardware page strongly recommends wired networking; its historical requirements are not a current general compatibility guarantee for Linux desktops.

Check the Linux client log when the overlay is not enough

Steam’s Remote Play FAQ lists /tmp/streaming_client.log as the Linux client log location. It can provide additional troubleshooting detail, but the file’s existence alone does not identify a cause; inspect its contents in the context of the failure.

A practical test order

  1. Wire the host to the router if possible; otherwise improve the Wi-Fi link and reduce competing traffic.
  2. Enable the performance overlay and reproduce the problem in a consistent game scene.
  3. Test hardware encoding on and off, confirming the encoder shown by Steam.
  4. Raise the bandwidth limit gradually from Steam’s 3 Mbit/s troubleshooting starting point, stopping at the last stable level.
  5. If frame rate remains low, test 1280×720, then consider lowering game render resolution or turning off V-sync as a separate experiment.
  6. If the cause remains unclear, inspect /tmp/streaming_client.log and review router prioritization or firewall configuration as appropriate.

Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, and TCP ports 27036 and 27037, in its network guidance for connection and firewall troubleshooting. These are not routine latency-tuning changes: check them when Remote Play cannot connect or a firewall appears to block it, not merely because the stream feels slow.
