In the PWHL’s 2026–27 season, 12 teams are split into two six-team conferences, and the top four in each conference qualify for the eight-team playoffs. The postseason has three rounds: best-of-three first-round series, followed by best-of-five conference finals and a best-of-five Walter Cup Final.
How teams qualify for the 2026–27 playoffs
The league’s 2026–27 format has 12 teams divided into the Eastern and Western conferences. The top four finishers in each conference advance, making eight playoff teams in total—not an eight-team league. The PWHL announced the format on October 2, 2026, alongside its 2026–27 regular-season schedule.

What happens in each playoff round
| Round | Format | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| First round | Four best-of-three series | All eight qualifiers enter. Each conference’s first-place team chooses its opponent from that conference’s third- or fourth-place team. |
| Conference finals | Best-of-five series | The first-round winners continue in their conference’s next round. |
| Walter Cup Final | Best-of-five series | The conference finalists meet to decide the champion. The league calls it the PWHL Walter Cup Finals presented by Scotiabank. |
“Best-of-three” means a team must win two games to take a series; “best-of-five” means it must win three. The league announcement specifies the first-place team’s choice between third and fourth in its own conference, but does not describe additional reseeding rules.
How this differs from the earlier PWHL format
The league says its first three postseasons used four playoff teams and two rounds. The 2026–27 format expands that field to eight teams and adds a third round, while introducing two conferences.

Season schedule is separate from the playoff format
The PWHL announcement lists 180 regular-season games for 2026, with the season running from December 5 through April 18. Those figures describe the regular season, not the number or dates of playoff games.
