Yes. A blister on a pitching finger can make gripping and releasing the ball uncomfortable, and a pitcher may change their grip to avoid the pain. That adjustment can make fine control harder. Blisters can also cost a pitcher time or a start while the skin heals, but the available evidence does not show that blisters independently change pitch counts or increase arm workload.
Why pitching can cause blisters
Each pitch presses and moves the fingers against the baseball’s seams. Repeated friction can injure the skin and form a blister, often at the tips of the index or middle fingers. The location may vary with a pitcher’s grip and pitch type. A study of finger-to-baseball friction describes how friction helps a pitcher hold and release the ball; it did not test blisters or measure their effect on pitching outcomes. Read the 2016 review of hand blisters in MLB pitchers and the study of finger-to-baseball friction.
How a blister can affect grip and command
Pain at a contact point can make a normal grip uncomfortable. A pitcher may shift finger placement or change pressure to avoid irritating the blister. The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) notes that this kind of adjustment can lead to a loss of command. A 2016 medical review likewise says even a relatively small blister may affect fine control. PBATS finger-care guidance; MDedge review of blisters and pitching rules.
This is a plausible mechanism, not a measured forecast: the cited material does not quantify a blister’s effect on velocity, strike percentage, or runs allowed. PBATS also notes that grip for certain pitches may lead to blisters on the index finger or thumb, and that humid conditions may contribute; those are reported considerations, not universal causes.

What is known about missed time—and what is not
A pitcher may have to stop an outing, delay a return, or miss a start if the blister needs time to heal. A 2016 review reported that six MLB players accounted for seven blister-related disabled-list stints totaling 151 days since 2010. It also reported that eight minor-league players spent time on the disabled list for blisters since 2012, and described professional pitchers who missed time or starts without a disabled-list placement. These are historical figures reported by that review, not current incidence estimates. The review’s abstract is indexed by PubMed.
Availability is different from arm workload. The evidence cited here does not establish that a blister, by itself, calls for a particular pitch limit, changes bullpen workload, or increases arm-injury risk. MLB’s 2024 report discusses pitcher injuries broadly, but it does not establish a blister-specific workload effect. For youth pitchers, USA Baseball’s Pitch Smart guidance sets age-specific pitch limits and rest recommendations to reduce injury likelihood associated with pitching while fatigued; it is general workload guidance, not a blister treatment protocol. Prevention, care and MLB game rules
Moisture management is not a guaranteed fix
PBATS reports that some pitchers use spray-on antiperspirant to reduce sweat and moisture on their fingers. That is a reported practice, not proof that it prevents blisters for everyone. A 2016 medical review surveys prevention and treatment approaches but does not establish one universal remedy. PBATS finger-care guidance.
Get help for a significant or recurring blister
PBATS’s 2025 management article discusses callus and blister care and stresses sterile conditions when aspirating or draining a blister. Do not treat that as a recommendation to drain one yourself. If a blister is significant, recurring, or interfering with pitching, consult team medical staff or a qualified clinician. PBATS blister-management guidance.

Do not improvise an in-game covering or substance
MLB’s doctoring-the-baseball guidance restricts foreign substances and prohibits attachments such as tape or a bandage on a pitcher’s hand, fingers, or wrist. It also requires a pitcher who touches their mouth or lips in the pitching circle to wipe the hand dry before touching the ball or pitching rubber. Do not use glue, tape, a bandage, or another substance on the pitching hand as an in-game workaround; check the current official rule language for MLB games. MLB: Doctoring the Baseball.
