“Off the injury report” generally means a player is not listed as unavailable or uncertain on the availability report that applies to that game. It is an availability signal—not a promise that the player will play, start, receive a normal workload, or be fully recovered.
What “off the injury report” means
The phrase is shorthand for a player not appearing among the report’s unavailable or uncertain players. In the SEC’s 2025 game-day reporting example, the listed statuses were “available,” “game time decision,” and “out”; Alabama running back Jam Miller was described as off the report. A Big Ten explainer likewise says a player omitted from its report is considered available. The practical meaning is therefore tied to the applicable conference report, not a universal label shared across college football.
For example, the 2025 SEC policy explainer discusses the SEC’s reporting system, while a separate Big Ten explainer describes that conference’s approach. Their terms and rules should not be treated as interchangeable.
What it does—and does not—tell you
- It is an availability signal. The applicable report does not list the player as unavailable or uncertain.
- It does not guarantee participation. A coach may still choose not to use the player, and the report alone does not establish whether he will start or how many snaps he will play.
- It is not a medical declaration. Being off a report does not establish that the player is fully healed, medically cleared, or free of limitations. Those claims require a separate statement from an appropriate source.
Why the conference and report date matter
There is no single identical injury report for every college football game. The SEC policy described in 2025 applies to conference matchups, and the cited Big Ten explainer addresses that conference’s reporting. The available evidence does not establish the complete current rules for every conference or independent team, so a player’s absence from one conference’s list cannot confirm availability for a game governed by another system—or for a game with no applicable report.
SEC details reported in 2025 illustrate why the specific release matters. That explanation described Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday updates, followed by a game-day update 90 minutes before kickoff. It listed “probable,” “questionable,” “doubtful,” and “out” for midweek reports, then “available,” “game time decision,” or “out” on game day. These are details of the SEC system as described in 2025, not NCAA-wide rules or a guarantee that the format remains unchanged in every season.
The SEC policy sentence reproduced by On3 / Inside Texas says that “any student-athlete who regularly participates in games (even on a limited basis) is subject to mandatory disclosure pursuant to this policy. In football, this includes any student-athlete regularly on the travel roster for an SEC road game.” That describes whom the SEC policy covers; it does not turn the report into a medical assessment.

How to check a player’s status
- Identify the game and governing report. Check the player’s team, opponent, season, and conference matchup rather than relying on a list for another conference.
- Read the latest release. Use the newest report and note when it was issued; an earlier status may no longer be current.
- Use the report’s exact wording. Distinguish “available” from “game time decision” or “out.” If the player is omitted, say he is not listed on that applicable report rather than claiming he is certainly playing.
- Look for separate confirmation about role or health. A report’s availability status does not establish a start, workload, or full recovery.
Status can change between releases. In a September 2026 SEC example, Sam Leavitt moved from doubtful to questionable and then off the report across successive updates. That is why a report should be treated as a dated snapshot, not a permanent prediction.
