RuneScape’s documented Steam review backlash followed Jagex’s introduction of Hero Pass in September 2023. PCGamesN reported 589 negative reviews by September 7, after the battle-pass-like feature launched on September 4. That is a dated account of a historical surge—not evidence that RuneScape is being review bombed now.
What happened with RuneScape’s Steam reviews?
Jagex announced Hero Pass on August 29, 2023, and launched it on September 4. The feature gave players missions to complete in exchange for cosmetics and other rewards. In its September 7 report, PCGamesN said players objected to the feature and reported a sharp increase in negative Steam reviews: around 300 arrived on September 1, and the count had reached 589 by the report’s publication.
PCGamesN described RuneScape’s Steam sentiment at that time as “mostly negative,” compared with what it characterized as the game’s usual “very positive” status. Those are figures and descriptions reported by the outlet in 2023, not current review totals or an independently audited count.
Why were players upset about Hero Pass?
The backlash centered on Hero Pass and the way Jagex introduced and communicated the feature. The available reporting does not establish that every negative review had the same motivation, or that all of them were unrelated to gameplay or service issues. Reviews can reflect more than one complaint at once.

On September 6, Jagex said it was listening to feedback and investigating improvements. It also acknowledged that its introduction and messaging around the feature had been mishandled. PCGamesN quoted Jagex’s apology: “Finally, while it’s not relative to Hero Pass feature feedback, we did want to drop a quick note on how we introduced the messaging around presenting Hero Pass to the community and apologise for clearly getting that wrong.”
What does “review bomb” mean on Steam?
Valve’s Steamworks User Reviews documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, defines a review bomb as “when a large amount of players use reviews to voice their unhappiness, lower a review score and provoke a response.” In that sense, the term describes a sudden wave of reviews used to make dissatisfaction visible; it does not, by itself, mean the reviews are fake or invalid.

Steam distinguishes off-topic review periods from other criticism. The platform says it excludes off-topic periods from the overall review score. A confirmed off-topic flag reduces a review’s visibility, but does not itself remove that review’s contribution to the score. Steam also recognizes that reviews can address business practices, value, and community experience, not just gameplay.
The reporting establishes a negative-review surge after Hero Pass, but the sources here do not establish that Valve officially classified RuneScape’s 2023 activity as a review bomb or marked that period off-topic.
