MLB.TV vs. Live TV Streaming: Which Is Best for Out-of-Market Games?

MLB.TV is usually the simplest choice for out-of-market regular-season games, but blackouts and national exclusivities apply. Learn when a local team package or live TV service is the better fit.

For a U.S. viewer whose favorite team is genuinely out of market, MLB.TV is usually the most direct option: it is built to stream out-of-market regular-season games live or on demand. A live TV streaming service is useful for channels that carry selected local or national broadcasts, but it is not a universal way around MLB.TV blackouts. Check your ZIP code and team before subscribing.

MLB.TV or live TV streaming: what is the difference?

MLB.TV is a baseball package centered on out-of-market regular-season games. MLB says those games are available live or on demand, subject to blackout restrictions and national exclusivities. Package features can also include MLB Network, Minor League Baseball, MLB Big Inning and live audio; what is included can depend on plan and platform. See MLB’s current package details.

A live TV streaming service bundles television channels rather than selling an out-of-market pass. Depending on the service and your location, those channels may carry selected local or nationally scheduled games. Sling, for example, says some MLB games on FOX and NBC are available only in select locations, and presents MLB.TV as an add-on for out-of-market games. Check Sling’s MLB viewing information.

What you need Most relevant starting point Important limitation
Your out-of-market team’s regular-season games MLB.TV Local blackouts and national exclusivities still apply; check your location and the current schedule.
Your in-market team’s games The club’s local streaming package or the local broadcaster carrying its games MLB.TV can black out games involving teams in your home territory; a general live TV bundle is not guaranteed to carry the right channel.
Selected local and national games plus other live channels A live TV service with the channels available in your ZIP code Lineups vary by service and market, and channel access does not remove MLB.TV blackouts.

These are different products with different jobs. If you want both out-of-market baseball and a broader channel lineup, you may need a combination—but confirm that the combination actually covers the games you care about.

How do I know if my team is out of market?

MLB.TV blackouts are geographic. A team can be considered in-market based on your location even when it is playing away. Fubo’s support page says games involving a team in the viewer’s home market are blacked out on MLB.TV whether that team is home or away. Use MLB’s blackout information and location checker with your location before choosing a package.

For a useful check, identify your ZIP code and favorite team, then look for that team’s games in the official blackout results. Do not infer eligibility from distance, the team’s home stadium, or whether a streaming service carries the local sports network.

Which option fits your situation?

Your favorite team is out of market

Start with MLB.TV if your main goal is that team’s regular-season games. Before buying, check blackouts and national exclusivities: a game may not be available through the package in the way or at the time you expect. If you also want live channels, assess a TV service separately by its local lineup rather than treating it as a substitute for MLB.TV.

Your favorite team is in your home territory

Look for the club’s local streaming option or the local broadcaster and channel carrying its games. MLB’s 2026 guide, published March 10, 2026, listed in-market streaming subscriptions for 22 of 30 clubs and said those services remove local blackouts within the club’s home territory. That count is season-specific; packages and availability vary, especially for clubs whose offerings involve regional sports network (RSN) partners. Check MLB’s 2026 guide to watching games without cable for the club-specific situation.

  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Do not assume MLB.TV will show your home team, or that any generic live TV package carries the local channel you need. A service’s channel lineup depends on your market.

You want national games and other live channels too

Compare live TV channel lineups using your ZIP code and the broadcasts you actually want. Sling says some MLB games on FOX and NBC are available in select locations; that is not a promise that every subscriber can watch every such game. National exclusivity can also affect where a game is available, so check the schedule and the current terms for the broadcast you want.

You are considering Fubo because it offers MLB.TV

Fubo documents MLB.TV availability and integration, but its support guidance says home-market games remain blacked out on MLB.TV even if Fubo does not carry the RSN or national channel airing them. In other words, subscribing to both does not guarantee every local game. Review Fubo’s home-team and MLB.TV explanation and verify channel availability for your area.

MLB.TV through ESPN in 2026

For the 2026 U.S. season, MLB.TV is available to purchase and stream through the ESPN app as well as through the MLB app, according to ESPN’s MLB.TV support information and MLB’s 2026 guide. MLB says an ESPN Unlimited subscription is not required to keep MLB.TV. Check the current plan and app details before signing up, since purchase route and package terms can change.

What to compare before paying

  • Market eligibility: Confirm whether MLB.TV treats your favorite team as in-market at your location.
  • Blackouts and exclusivity: Check both local restrictions and national broadcast arrangements for the games you follow.
  • Channel lineup: Look up the live TV service’s channels in your ZIP code and confirm they carry the broadcasts you want.
  • Local club package: If your team is in-market, check whether it offers a local streaming subscription and review any geographic limits.
  • Apps and devices: Confirm the streaming app works on the devices you use. ESPN’s MLB.TV support page lists Roku among compatible devices; a device is only hardware and does not include a subscription or alter blackout eligibility.
  • Price and renewal terms: Compare the current offer, billing period, renewal price and cancellation terms on the provider’s checkout page. MLB’s displayed offers can change, and there is no single stable annual price established here for comparison.

A quick decision process

  1. Enter your ZIP code and favorite team in MLB’s blackout checker to establish whether MLB.TV is a fit.
  2. If the team is out of market, compare MLB.TV’s current plan and restrictions against the games you want to watch.
  3. If the team is in market, find its official local streaming package or the local broadcaster/channel carrying its games, then confirm that service covers your location.
  4. If you want additional live channels, compare providers’ current local lineups by ZIP code; treat that subscription as a channel choice, not a blackout workaround.
  5. Check the app, device and billing terms for the exact plan you intend to buy.

Frequently asked questions

Does MLB.TV show every game for an out-of-market team?

No. MLB.TV’s out-of-market coverage remains subject to local blackout restrictions and national exclusivities. Check MLB’s current blackout results and the relevant game’s broadcast details.

Can a live TV streaming service get around an MLB.TV blackout?

Not universally. A live TV service may carry a channel showing a particular game in your market, but channel lineups differ, and Fubo says MLB.TV home-market games remain blacked out even when Fubo lacks the channel airing them.

Can I keep MLB.TV without ESPN Unlimited?

Yes. MLB’s 2026 guidance says an ESPN Unlimited subscription is not required to retain MLB.TV. Verify the current purchase and app terms for your account.
