To use an Android handheld’s controls with Steam games, pair a compatible controller with Android, then connect the handheld to a computer running Steam through the Steam Link app. The game runs on the computer and streams to Android; these steps do not make Steam games run locally on every Android handheld.
What you need to know before connecting
Steam Link is the documented bridge for this setup: your computer hosts and runs the game, while the Android handheld receives its audio and video stream and sends controller input back. Having controls built into a handheld does not guarantee Steam Link will recognize them. Valve’s compatibility information names specific controllers, and notes that other input devices may work without official support.
The instructions below cover controller pairing and streaming from a computer. They do not establish that every Android handheld can run Steam games locally or that every built-in control layout is supported.
How do I connect a Bluetooth controller to my Android device?
Android supports game controllers over Bluetooth or a compatible wired connection. For Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode according to its instructions, then pair it from Android settings:

- Tap Pair new device.
- Select the controller from the list of available Bluetooth devices and complete any prompts.
Google’s Android Help explains that a controller can connect using either a wired connection or Bluetooth: Set up your game controller settings on Android. For a wired connection, use a cable compatible with both the controller and handheld; the required connector depends on those devices. Android setting names and available controller-customization options can vary by device and release.
On supported Android devices, system settings may let you swap button assignments or the left and right joysticks. Such changes are not a guaranteed fix for a controller that Steam Link or a particular game does not recognize.

How do I use a controller with Steam Link on Android?
- Start the host computer. Launch Steam and sign in on the computer that will run the game.
- Connect the handheld to the host’s network. For initial setup, put both on the same network.
- Open Steam Link. Install or launch the Steam Link app on Google Play, then follow its on-screen instructions to find and connect to the computer.
- Start a game from the Steam Link session. The computer runs the game; Steam Link streams its audio and video to Android and returns controller input to the host.
Pairing a controller successfully in Android settings confirms only that Android has connected to it. Check Steam Link’s controller status, then test the controls in the game. A controller may connect to Android yet fail to work as expected in the app or a specific game.

Valve says other input devices may work even if they are not officially supported; that is not a guarantee for every Bluetooth controller. Check the exact controller model, Android version, connection method, and the handheld’s ports and physical fit. Valve’s list does not provide a universal setup or mapping procedure for built-in controls on every Android handheld.
How to improve a slow or unstable Steam Link stream
Network conditions affect streaming. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for Steam Link. For a phone or tablet, its Google Play listing recommends connecting the host computer to the 5 GHz router by Ethernet and connecting the Android device to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. For Android TV, Valve recommends Ethernet for both the host computer and TV.

These are best-performance recommendations, not a promise of a particular latency or frame rate. If the stream is unstable, use the recommended wired host connection and 5 GHz band where available, and keep the handheld within reasonable range of the router.

The controller does not appear in Android’s Bluetooth list
- Confirm the controller is in Bluetooth pairing mode; consult its manual for the correct button combination.
- Check that its battery is charged and that it is advertising over Bluetooth.
- If possible, see whether it pairs with another phone or computer.
Android shows the controller as connected, but Steam Link does not respond
- Check whether Valve explicitly lists the exact model for Steam Link on Android.
- Close and reopen Steam Link after pairing, then check the app’s controller status.
- If the model is not listed, Valve does not promise a universal fix or compatibility.
The controls work in Steam Link but not in one game
This may be a game-specific input or mapping issue. Check that the game supports controllers and inspect its own controller settings. Android button or joystick remapping is a system-level option, not a guarantee that a streamed game will receive the input differently.

You need to pair the controller again
In Android’s paired-device settings, forget the controller, put it back into pairing mode, and pair it again. Valve’s separate Steam Link Hardware support instructions also describe deleting an old pairing and initiating pairing again for Steam Link hardware; those device-specific instructions are not the Android app’s setup flow.
