Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor low-latency PC game streaming on Android, start with a stream resolution your device can decode, a frame rate your PC can sustain, hardware encoding on the host where available, and Moonlight’s Balanced frame-pacing mode. Then use Moonlight’s performance overlay to tune bitrate and compare Balanced with Prefer lowest latency on your own setup. There is no universal best resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate: responsiveness depends on the whole path from game rendering and encoding through the network, Android decoding, display, and controller.
Start with a sustainable baseline
In Moonlight, choose the Android stream resolution at or below your device’s native display resolution, then select a frame rate the PC can hold consistently and the Android device can decode. Start conservatively rather than assuming that the highest available resolution or FPS will feel fastest. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether a change improved responsiveness, smoothness, or image quality.
Use hardware encoding on the host if it is supported and working well. Sunshine documents NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, AMD VCE, VA-API for AMD or Intel, and CPU software encoding. Keep Sunshine’s default encoder selection unless the overlay or a compatibility problem gives you a reason to change it; the encoder name alone does not establish which option is fastest on your PC. Sunshine’s encoder and configuration documentation describes the available paths.
Choose Android frame pacing for your priority
Moonlight’s Android frame-pacing modes trade immediate presentation against protection from uneven frame delivery. Moonlight recommends Balanced, but the mode that feels best depends on your display, game, device, and network. Compare modes in the same scene and under the same network conditions.

| Mode | What it does | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced | Uses Android’s Choreographer callback and can buffer up to one frame to smooth network jitter and differences between host and client V-sync. | Can look steadier when delivery is uneven, but buffering can add waiting compared with immediately presenting a decoded frame. |
| Prefer lowest latency | Renders a frame as soon as it is decoded, drops the previous frame if it has not yet been displayed, and keeps display refresh as high as possible. | Reduces intentional waiting, but offers less protection from jitter and irregular pacing; the image may look uneven on an unstable path. |
| Balanced with FPS limit | Caps FPS at one below display refresh and does not drop frames. If stream FPS exceeds display refresh, it behaves like Balanced. | Variable-refresh-rate displays may have issues because their refresh rate fluctuates. |
| Prefer smoothest video | Never drops frames, including when stream FPS is equal to or higher than display refresh. | Prioritizes keeping frames over responsiveness, so it may not suit latency-sensitive play. |
These descriptions are from the Moonlight FAQ. If the picture is smooth but controls feel delayed, compare Prefer lowest latency with Balanced. If frame delivery looks uneven, try Balanced before increasing bitrate or raising FPS.
Tune bitrate using the overlay, not a bandwidth speed test
Bitrate affects image quality, but a higher setting can overload the network path or the Android decoder. Increase it only while Moonlight’s network latency variance and network-dropped frames stay low. If variance rises sharply or network drops appear, lower bitrate or improve path stability before trying a higher value again. A fast internet or LAN link does not guarantee that every network segment or the client decoder can handle a high-bitrate stream.

Enable Moonlight’s Android on-screen performance overlay and observe its metrics during gameplay. They are diagnostic clues, not a complete measurement of end-to-end latency:
- Network latency is a client-host-client packet round trip: input travels to the PC and the resulting audio or video returns. Geographic distance and a bitrate the connection cannot sustain can raise it; cellular connections tend to have higher network latency than traditional internet connections.
- Network latency variance is packet-to-packet jitter. A high or erratic value points toward an unstable path or bitrate overload. Moonlight advises lowering bitrate or using a more stable connection when it jumps around.
- Decode latency is the average time the Android client takes to decode a frame and ready it for rendering. It depends on client hardware, bitrate, resolution, FPS, display refresh, and synchronization. Moonlight notes that raising the stream rate to 90 or 120 FPS may lower decode latency on some devices; this is not guaranteed and increases demands on both PC and client.
- Frame-queue latency is how long decoded frames wait for rendering, often while a previous frame is rendering or waiting for V-sync. Moonlight says it should generally remain below one frame interval: 16 ms at 60 FPS.
- Render latency includes presenting the frame and, with V-sync, typically includes a V-sync period; Moonlight gives 16 ms at a 60 Hz display as an example.
- Network-dropped frames should generally stay near zero. Moonlight associates elevated counts with unreliable links, including 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or powerline networking, and with bitrate beyond what the path can support.
- Jitter drops occur when frames arrive too early or too late relative to presentation. They can indicate that frame delivery and presentation are not lining up cleanly.
Interpret the metrics together: high network variance suggests a path or bitrate problem; high decode latency points toward client capacity or stream settings; high frame-queue or render latency points toward client rendering or presentation synchronization. The overlay does not necessarily include compositor, display scan-out, or controller-input delay, and Moonlight says different client platforms expose different subsets of metrics. Its figures are not directly comparable across unrelated clients; external measurement hardware is needed for the most accurate end-to-end measurement. See Moonlight’s explanation of the on-screen statistics.

Check network consistency when latency varies
Real-time streaming depends on low latency with low variance and minimal packet loss, not just peak throughput. Sunshine’s troubleshooting guide describes using iPerf3 to test a UDP stream for 60 seconds and watching jitter and packet loss. It gives below 1 ms jitter and under 5% packet loss as ideal test output. Those figures are troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play or a universal service requirement. The guide also suggests PingMaster as an Android troubleshooting tool. See Sunshine’s network troubleshooting guidance.
Video can be sent in bursts—for example, every 16 ms in a 60 FPS stream—so a slower segment can fill its buffers and drop packets even when another link reports a higher speed. Test the path that actually carries your stream. Ethernet is a useful comparison when both devices support it, but a clean wireless connection can also work well; raw speed-test results alone do not predict stream stability. Sunshine says versions after 0.23.1 include networking improvements intended to alleviate this burst-related condition. Check documentation for your installed version before attempting advanced network-interface or traffic-shaping changes. Opening ports or exposing the host to the public internet is not routine latency tuning.

Keep Sunshine’s encoder settings focused on measured bottlenecks
For NVIDIA NVENC, Sunshine labels preset P1 fastest and P7 slowest. Higher preset numbers improve compression at a given bitrate but increase encoding latency. Sunshine recommends changing this setting mainly when network or decoder limits are the issue; it is not a latency optimization to select a slower preset. At a fixed bitrate, better compression may help image quality, but the added encode time can work against responsiveness. Sunshine notes that a similar quality effect may be achieved by increasing bitrate when the connection can handle it. Sunshine’s configuration documentation details the NVENC options.
Sunshine’s max_bitrate sets a maximum encode bitrate; zero means Sunshine uses the bitrate requested by Moonlight. Its minimum_fps_target controls the lowest effective frame rate during static or low-frame-rate content because some clients expect a constant video stream. Sunshine uses variable-frame-rate encoding that follows content updates up to Moonlight’s configured maximum, so a low FPS reading on a static desktop scene alone does not prove that gameplay is slow.

Compare codecs on the devices you actually use
Sunshine can advertise HEVC and AV1 profiles based on encoder capabilities, and warns that software encoding with these codecs can be more CPU-intensive. The available documentation does not establish one codec as the lowest-latency choice across Android devices. Compare only codecs supported by both your host and Android hardware, and use the overlay to check for changes in decode and network behavior rather than assuming a format is inherently faster.
A practical tuning order
- Set a sustainable resolution and FPS. Begin at native or lower supported resolution and a frame rate the PC can sustain while the Android client can decode.
- Confirm hardware encoding. Use a supported Sunshine hardware encoder when available, and leave its selection at the default unless you observe a compatibility or performance issue.
- Start with Balanced pacing. Switch to Prefer lowest latency if responsiveness is the priority and frame delivery is stable; compare other modes only to address a visible pacing preference or issue.
- Adjust bitrate in small increments. Raise it for image quality only while network variance and network drops remain low; back off when they worsen.
- Use the overlay to locate the cost. Check network variance, decode, frame-queue, render, and dropped-frame metrics, then change the setting most relevant to the symptom.
- Test path stability if needed. Compare a stable wired path where practical, or follow Sunshine’s UDP iPerf3 guidance to inspect jitter and packet loss.
- Compare codecs only with hardware support confirmed. Measure on the target Android device and host; no general codec winner is established.
What the settings cannot tell you
Moonlight’s statistics cover parts of the streaming pipeline, not every stage. They do not necessarily include Android compositor behavior, display scan-out, or controller-input delay. A responsive overlay reading therefore cannot prove a specific end-to-end controller-to-photon latency. The best settings depend on the PC, Android model, display refresh rate, network path, and game; compare changes under repeatable conditions on that actual setup.
