Use the upscaler your game supports that also works with your GPU, then compare the available modes in the same scene and at the settings you actually play. DLSS, FSR and XeSS are feature suites—not single, interchangeable settings—and support can differ between upscaling, frame generation and other features.
What should you choose?
Start with your current graphics card and the options shown in the game. If only one upscaler is available and compatible, that is the practical choice. If the game offers more than one, compare them at the same output resolution and mode; the name alone does not establish which will look best in that title.
These technologies are implemented game by game. General hardware compatibility does not guarantee that a particular game exposes an option. NVIDIA says its app can update supported games to use newer DLSS features, while Intel’s developer materials describe XeSS as a technology developers integrate into titles. Check the game’s own settings and the vendors’ current compatibility information: NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS.
How DLSS, FSR and XeSS differ
All three names cover more than image upscaling. Support for one feature in a suite does not mean every other feature in that suite is available on the same GPU.

| Technology | Hardware considerations | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DLSS | DLSS includes RTX-specific features. NVIDIA’s support table distinguishes features across RTX generations, with some newer capabilities reserved for newer hardware. | Check the exact DLSS feature, your RTX generation and whether the game offers it. NVIDIA’s app can update supported games to newer DLSS features, but that does not mean every game or feature is supported. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview |
| AMD FSR | Support depends on the FSR version and feature. AMD says ML-based FSR Upscaling supports RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics; RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. AMD describes earlier FSR options as having broader support. | Distinguish ML-based FSR Upscaling from earlier FSR options, and treat the RX 6000 statement as a roadmap—not a feature currently available on those cards. AMD’s FSR overview |
| Intel XeSS | Intel describes XeSS Super Resolution as cross-vendor on compatible hardware with requisite driver support. Its developer materials list separate hardware support for Super Resolution, frame generation and multi-frame generation. | Check compatibility for the specific XeSS feature rather than assuming the Super Resolution requirements apply to frame generation. Intel says the XeSS algorithm’s main requirement is graphics drivers supporting Shader Model 6.4. Intel’s cross-vendor support article and XeSS developer overview |
Upscaling and frame generation are different choices
Upscaling
Upscaling reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution rendered image. Compare the upscaling modes themselves at the same output resolution and in the same game scene. Image quality can involve visible detail, temporal stability, ghosting and other artifacts; without controlled, game-specific comparisons, the suite name does not establish how those trade-offs will look in your game.
Frame generation
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames; it is separate from rendering more frames natively. A higher displayed-FPS counter by itself does not show that input latency is lower. Treat frame generation as a separate setting to evaluate, and check its own hardware and game requirements.

Other suite features
Ray reconstruction, low-latency features and multi-frame generation are also distinct from basic upscaling. Verify the exact feature label in the game and its hardware requirements in the vendor’s current documentation: DLSS, FSR and XeSS.
How to compare the options in your game
- Check what the game actually offers. Look in its graphics or display settings for the named upscaler and each separate feature. Do not infer availability from the GPU brand or the suite’s general compatibility.
- Confirm your exact GPU generation and feature support. Consult the vendor’s support page for the specific option you want; family names alone can conceal generation-specific limits.
- Choose a comparable mode and output resolution. Keep the scene, resolution and other settings consistent so you are comparing the upscalers rather than a mixture of setting changes.
- Inspect image quality as well as performance. Look for the details and motion artifacts that matter to you in your game. A vendor feature description is not an independent image-quality test.
- Evaluate frame generation separately. Consider displayed frames and responsiveness as distinct outcomes instead of treating an FPS counter as proof of lower latency.
Does adoption tell you which is best?
Not by itself. NVIDIA reported on January 6, 2026, that more than 250 games and apps supported DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. That is NVIDIA’s dated vendor-reported adoption count, not an audited comparison with FSR or XeSS and not evidence that DLSS produces the best image in any particular game. There is no directly comparable three-vendor game-count dataset or controlled head-to-head quality statistic established here. Adoption, hardware compatibility and image quality are separate questions; use the first two to narrow your choices and the game itself to judge the third.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade your graphics card?
Check your existing GPU and the game before considering an upgrade. If the option you want is already available and compatible, these feature descriptions alone do not establish a need to replace your card. If it is not, verify the exact generation and feature support for any graphics card you are considering, along with that game’s implementation; not every card in a product family supports every feature.
