Avoid sports that could hit, heavily load, or cause a fall onto your injured wrist while a fracture is healing, unless your treating clinician has specifically cleared the activity. A cast, brace, or reduced pain does not prove the bone is ready for sport. The right return date depends on the broken bone, fracture pattern, treatment, healing progress, symptoms, and the demands of the sport.
If you suspect a fracture, get it assessed rather than trying to play through it. The NHS says an X-ray is used to confirm a break and assess its severity: NHS: Broken arm or wrist.
Why sport can put a healing wrist at risk
Sport can expose the wrist to a direct blow, a fall onto the hand, gripping, throwing, or weight-bearing. Those demands can stress a healing fracture even if the wrist feels better. The NHS advises people with a broken arm or wrist not to use the affected arm, and AAOS advises people with a scaphoid fracture to avoid contact sports and activities with a risk of falling onto the hand unless their doctor approves advanced activity.
That makes a universal list of “safe sports” misleading. Consider the actual activity and the injured wrist’s role:

Use these factors to discuss a specific activity with the treating clinician; they do not replace individualized clearance.
How long does it take to return?
Healing estimates are not sports-clearance dates. Published guidance varies because it covers different fractures, treatments, and activity levels.

| Source and fracture context | Published recovery or activity guidance |
|---|---|
| NHS, broken arm or wrist | Usually around 6 to 8 weeks to recover; severe damage can take longer. The year of the guidance is not stated. |
| NHS inform, wrist fracture | Most healing happens between 6 and 12 weeks; its staged advice lists return to contact sports at 12 weeks. The year of the guidance is not stated, and this is not automatic clearance for an individual. |
| AAOS OrthoInfo, distal radius fracture | Most fractures take about 3 months to heal enough for all activities. Demanding activities such as skiing or football may resume between 3 and 6 months after injury, depending on recovery. The year of the guidance is not stated. |
| AAOS OrthoInfo, scaphoid fracture | A cast or splint may be needed for up to 6 months or until the fracture has healed. The year of the guidance is not stated. |
| Gateshead Health, wrist fracture | Advises avoiding heavy lifting and contact sport for 3 months; page updated 5 August 2025. |
| Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, distal radius fracture | Sport-specific throwing and catching practice can build gradually from around 6 weeks before full training and competition; publication year is not established. |
A distal radius fracture and a scaphoid fracture do not have one shared recovery course. Follow-up examination and, where appropriate, imaging help the treating team decide whether to advance activity.
How to return to sport cautiously
- Follow the fracture plan. Keep follow-up appointments and follow the restrictions set by the fracture clinic or orthopaedic clinician; the NHS says follow-ups are used to check healing.
- While the wrist is immobilized, avoid adding load. Follow instructions for the cast or splint. General wrist-fracture advice may include moving the fingers and thumb and keeping the elbow and shoulder moving, but do not add wrist drills that conflict with your care plan.
- Restart movement and strength only when permitted. Use prescribed exercises or hand therapy. NHS inform advises stopping exercises if symptoms worsen or new pain develops.
- Build through stages. Progress from everyday function and light activity to controlled sport-specific drills, then full practice and competition as directed. Hull’s guidance describes gradually building throwing and catching practice before full training and competition.
- Stop or scale back if symptoms worsen. Do not use a pain-free test as your clearance: pain may ease before the fracture is ready for full sport.
North Bristol NHS Trust’s April 2024 patient leaflet says a return to sport should wait until the wrist is “free of pain, supple and strong.” Treat that as a readiness principle, not a substitute for your clinician’s decision: North Bristol NHS Trust: Orthopaedic information and patient leaflets.

Can you play with a cast on?
Do not treat a cast as protection that makes sport safe. It does not establish that the fracture can withstand impact, a fall, or sport-specific loading. Ask the treating clinician before resuming any activity that involves those risks. For cast care, keep it dry and follow your care team’s instructions; the NHS notes that waterproof cast covers are available from pharmacies for bathing, not as sports protection.

Seek urgent medical advice if pain worsens, the cast is damaged or feels too tight or loose, fingers or the arm become numb or markedly swollen, fingers look blue or white, or there is a bad smell or fluid discharge under the cast. The NHS lists these as reasons to seek advice about a cast or broken arm or wrist.
