DLSS vs. Native Resolution: Image Quality, Performance, and Artifacts

DLSS can trade some directly rendered detail for higher performance, but image quality depends on the game, mode, scene, and native anti-aliasing. Learn what to compare and which artifacts to watch for.

DLSS Super Resolution can look close to native rendering and raise frame rates, but it is not a universal upgrade. It reconstructs the output image from a lower-resolution internal render, so the result depends on the game, DLSS mode and model, scene, and native anti-aliasing. Compare the same output resolution and settings, then check both motion and fine detail—not just a still screenshot.

What is the difference between DLSS and native resolution?

With native rendering, the game renders its base image at the output resolution you are using. That image may still be processed with anti-aliasing or other filters; “native” does not mean unprocessed.

DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for the chosen output resolution using temporal and spatial information. NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of neural-rendering technologies powered by RTX Tensor Cores and says it targets image quality comparable to native rendering. That is NVIDIA’s stated goal, not a guarantee that every game or scene will match native detail (NVIDIA DLSS overview).

The distinction matters: you are comparing two rendering paths, not simply two output resolutions. A fair test holds the output resolution steady and identifies the DLSS mode and the native anti-aliasing method.

DLSS Super Resolution is not DLAA

DLAA uses DLSS technology for anti-aliasing while rendering at native resolution; it is not the lower-resolution upscaling path. NVIDIA distinguishes the two in its driver guide. If you are asking whether upscaling looks better than native, do not treat DLAA as another upscaling mode.

Frame generation is a separate comparison

Frame generation is a separate frame-rate technology. Leave it off when comparing Super Resolution image quality, or report its effect separately; otherwise, the comparison mixes reconstruction with generated frames.

Is DLSS better than native resolution?

Neither label guarantees the better-looking image. Native rendering can preserve detail that a reconstruction misses, while DLSS can produce a pleasing image and, depending on the game’s native anti-aliasing, may look better in particular scenes. The implementation and the scene matter more than the label.

Results also depend on output resolution, internal render resolution, DLSS mode and model, and what is on screen. Fine repeating textures, foliage, wires, particles, and thin edges can expose differences that a broad or static scene does not. Motion and newly revealed areas can expose temporal artifacts that are easy to miss in a paused frame.

In NVIDIA’s 2026 announcement, the company said its second-generation transformer model for DLSS 4.5 improves image quality and temporal stability, and highlighted Performance and Ultra Performance as modes with strong quality/performance benefits (NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement). Those are vendor claims, not proof of identical results in every supported game. Independent testing likewise describes improvements in tested examples alongside remaining problem areas: Digital Foundry’s January 23, 2026 review notes issues with some ray-tracing effects, while PC Gamer’s testing reports reduced pixel crawling and improved temporal stability in its examples. These observations are specific to the tested scenarios.

A preference test is not a universal technical verdict either. Tom’s Hardware reported that DLSS 4.5 received 48.2% of votes in ComputerBase’s six-game 4K blind test (Tom’s Hardware’s report). That vote share describes that sample and setup; it does not establish that DLSS is superior in every game, or measure image quality independently of viewer preference.

Does DLSS look worse than native?

It can, particularly when reconstruction has difficulty resolving detail that is small, thin, repeating, or newly visible. It can also look comparable in a given scene, and the native image may itself have softness or aliasing from its anti-aliasing implementation. There is no single answer that applies across games and modes.

Start by checking which DLSS mode is active. More aggressive performance-oriented modes use a lower internal render resolution, leaving the reconstruction with less directly rendered detail. For one concrete, test-specific example, PC Gamer notes that Performance mode at 1080p uses a 540p internal render resolution. Treat that as the cited mode and setup, not as a universal figure for all games and implementations.

Compare the image at the same output resolution on the same display. A lower-resolution internal image viewed at its own size is not a fair comparison with a native-output image, and screenshots can hide temporal differences that appear during play.

What artifacts can DLSS cause?

Because Super Resolution reconstructs an image from prior and current information rather than rendering every output pixel directly, artifacts may appear in difficult motion or detail. NVIDIA’s technical discussion of DLSS describes reconstruction and temporal-stability challenges (NVIDIA ADLR on DLSS 4).

  • Unstable fine detail: foliage, thin geometry, wires, particles, or repeating patterns may shimmer, crawl, or change as the camera moves.
  • Ghosting: a moving object or a newly revealed area can leave a faint trail or lagging detail when prior-frame information does not align cleanly.
  • Ray-tracing issues: reflections or lighting effects may show artifacts in specific implementations; Digital Foundry reported remaining problems with some ray-tracing effects in its DLSS 4.5 review.

These are possible failure modes, not inevitable defects. The specific game, mode, model, scene, and motion determine whether they are visible.

Does DLSS improve FPS?

Super Resolution can improve frame rate because the game directly renders fewer pixels before reconstructing the output image. The size of the gain is not established as a universal multiplier: it varies with the game, selected mode, settings, GPU and CPU limits. NVIDIA describes DLSS as a way to raise frame rates while targeting native-comparable image quality, but that description should not be read as a guaranteed result for a particular setup.

Measure frame rate separately from image quality. If performance barely changes, the system may be limited by something other than the pixels being rendered, or the game and settings may not yield a meaningful difference. Do not attribute a frame-rate change to Super Resolution if frame generation or other settings also changed.

How to compare DLSS with native fairly

  1. Choose a repeatable scene. Use the same game area, camera position, and movement path so the two captures show the same content.
  2. Fix the output resolution and graphics settings. Keep the display output, quality settings, and camera path constant between runs.
  3. Record both rendering methods. Note the DLSS mode and model or preset, plus internal render resolution if the game exposes it. Record the native anti-aliasing option as well.
  4. Keep frame generation separate. Disable it for the image-quality comparison, or clearly separate its results from the Super Resolution comparison.
  5. Inspect stills and motion. Check thin edges, foliage, wires, particles, moving objects, newly revealed areas, and ray-traced lighting or reflections. Watch for crawling detail, ghosting, and instability over time.
  6. Measure performance independently. Compare frame rate with the same scene and settings, and state the GPU, game version, DLSS model or preset, and configuration. Treat the outcome as specific to that setup.

Which should you use?

Use native rendering if it gives you the detail and motion stability you prefer at a frame rate you find acceptable. Try DLSS Super Resolution when you want more performance or a smoother experience and its reconstruction looks good in the scenes you play. If you want DLSS-based anti-aliasing without lower-resolution upscaling, look for DLAA instead.

DLSS Super Resolution is an RTX hardware use case, but support for individual DLSS features varies by GPU generation and game. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview and feature guide describe the technology and distinctions; check the particular game and GPU for the feature support you need.
