Need a nudge before the reveal? The four themes are circus sights, characters from Oz, film departments, and a repeated phrase from “The Joker.” Scroll for the full answer key to the Saturday, April 13, 2024 puzzle, game #307.

Hints for Connections #307

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. Try these spoiler-light clues before opening the solutions.

  • Yellow: Think of acts and objects you might encounter under a big top.
  • Green: Look for characters from a classic Oz story.
  • Blue: Consider specialist teams involved in making a movie.
  • Purple: Complete a repeated first-person phrase from a well-known song.

Answers for Saturday, April 13, 2024

Spoilers below. The answer guide identifies this puzzle as game #307 and supplies the category labels and word sets. The color assignments below follow the game’s standard yellow-to-purple order.

Yellow — Seen at the circus

CLOWN, RING, TENT, TRAPEZE

Green — “The Wizard of Oz” figures

LION, SCARECROW, WITCH, WIZARD

Blue — Film departments

HAIR, MAKEUP, PROPS, WARDROBE

Purple — “I’m a ___” (lyrics in “The Joker”)

JOKER, LOVER, SINNER, SMOKER

How the four connections differ

The groups draw on different kinds of association: the circus set links words to a place and its attractions; the Oz set depends on story-character knowledge; the film set names production departments; and the final set completes a phrase associated with the song “The Joker.” That mix is a useful reminder to check both direct thematic clusters and phrases that individual words can complete.

A quick solving approach

  1. Start with concrete clusters. Look for words that clearly belong to a shared setting or subject, such as circus sights.
  2. Check for familiar casts and specialist vocabulary. A group may be based on story characters or roles in a production rather than objects from one place.
  3. Revisit words with more than one possible meaning. If a word seems to fit several themes, test whether it forms a phrase with the other candidates before submitting a set.
  4. Save the most indirect association for last. Phrase completion and song familiarity can be harder to spot than a literal category.
