For the community-recommended Windows 10/11 setup, install the original game, then apply official Patch 1.1, official Patch 1.2, and unofficial Community Patch 1.42—in that order. Skip Patch 1.3 for ordinary gameplay. Once patched, configure the game with the patch’s Setup.exe, then follow the individual instructions for any mod you choose.
What you need before installing
The Black & White Community’s Windows 10/11 setup guide assumes you have the original game disc, either in an optical drive or mounted as an ISO, and administrator rights. The guide recommends installing to the C: drive to avoid common setup problems; treat that as its recommendation, not a universal technical requirement. If you own the disc but your computer has no optical drive, an external USB DVD drive is one way to access it.

Run the game installer as administrator. When installation finishes, choose not to launch the game yet. Apply the patches first.
Install the Windows patches in the right order
- Run the official Patch 1.1 installer as administrator.
- Run the official Patch 1.2 installer as administrator.
- Run the unofficial Community Patch 1.42 installer as administrator.
The community guide says the game will not launch without the unofficial patch. Do not add Patch 1.3 to this gameplay sequence: the guide says it is not a gameplay patch, and openblack’s documentation describes its P5 Power Glove support as generally unstable.

Configure and launch the patched game
Restore the soundtrack if it is missing
If the game has no soundtrack, copy the disc’s Audio folder into the game’s installation folder. If Windows asks whether to merge folders, choose to merge them.
Set resolution and graphics
After the fan patch is installed, open the game directory and run its Setup.exe. Use it to choose a resolution and set graphics quality to Maximum Detail.
Launch without Compatibility mode
Set runblack.exe to run as administrator, then launch it. The community guide advises against enabling Windows Compatibility mode.
If a previous installation failed
The community setup guide suggests removing a failed installation before starting over. Its cleanup procedure includes uninstalling the game, deleting the remaining game directory, and removing specified registry keys. Registry changes can remove configuration, so only follow that part when you can identify the exact Black & White installation and keys described in the guide. Do not delete keys based on a guess.

Where to find mods and how to install them
The Black & White Community downloads archive separates Black & White 1 resources into patches, add-ons, maps, mods/apps/tools, and skins. It also lists resources related to Creature Isle and Battle of the Gods. Examples include “Black and White Creature Isle Definitive Edition,” listed as a mod expansion with an archive update date of September 18, 2024, and “Black & White Plus,” listed as a small improvement mod with an update date of August 9, 2024. Those archive dates do not establish compatibility with every current Windows setup.
There is no single install procedure documented for every archive item, and the archive landing page does not provide item-by-item steps. Open the page for the specific resource, check its requirements and version notes, and follow the instructions there. Back up your saves and any game files the mod may replace before installing. The available documentation does not establish one mod manager as standard for all Black & White mods.

Advanced option: apply individual executable patches
The openblack bw1-patches repository offers a command-line alternative for technically experienced users. It requires Rust 1.86 or newer, builds the bw1patch tool, and applies selected binary changes to an unprotected runblack.exe, producing a patched copy. It checks expected bytes before patching; the project advises backing up the executable before an in-place operation.
The game normally ships packed with SecuROM. Extracting an unprotected executable is outside the tool’s scope; the repository points users who want a ready-made patch to the Community Patch. The command-line route is therefore not needed for the ordinary installer workflow.

The repository documents fixes for windowed mode, texture and detail settings, landscape draw distance, official add-ons on newer Windows versions, secret creatures, saves redirected to Documents, and widescreen presentation. Resolutions above 2048 pixels use a separate proxy DLL, not the command-line patcher.

For Linux or macOS, openblack’s documentation describes installing the original game through Wine, applying official patches 1.10 and 1.2, and optionally applying unofficial patch 1.42. Under Wine, the unofficial installer requires .NET 2.0. The openblack project uses the original installation’s Audio, Data, and Scripts folders; this describes that project’s requirements, not guaranteed compatibility for every conventional game mod.
The Black & White Community setup guide says the original Mac port runs only on older PowerPC Macs and is incompatible with modern hardware. It does not provide a modern native Mac installation path.
