Changes depend on the game: its developer must release a title update, or the game must support a feature such as PS5 Pro enhancements or PSSR. Backward compatibility means most PS4 games can be played on PS5; it does not mean they are all remastered.
What can make a game look or run better on PS5?
“Better graphics” can mean different things: sharper image detail, higher resolution, ray tracing, or a steadier or higher frame rate. These benefits are separate, and one game may improve in one area without changing the others. Sony says PS5 Pro features vary by supported game, rather than applying uniformly across the library. Does PS5 make PS4 games look better?
Sometimes, but not as a blanket rule. Sony says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5. It also says select PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, which can make them run at a higher or smoother frame rate. Game Boost is automatic where applicable; it is not a universal graphics-remaster switch. Sony cautions that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5 and some games may show errors or unexpected behavior. On PS5 Pro, the optional Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games setting may improve image quality for compatible games. Sony limits this setting to CFI-7000 model-group consoles and displays that support 2160p or 1440p at 60Hz. The setting is not evidence that every PS4 game will benefit; Sony advises turning it off if unexpected behavior occurs. Details are in Sony’s PS4 image-quality setting instructions.

Which PS5 games are PS5 Pro enhanced?
Only supported titles receive PS5 Pro enhancements, and the features differ by game. Sony’s November 2024 launch announcement listed more than 50 enhanced games for launch on November 7, 2024; that is a historical launch count, not a current complete list. PSSR support is title-specific
PSSR is Sony’s image-upscaling technology, not a patch that updates every game. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement said upgraded PSSR was rolling out to supported titles including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert. Sony also said Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 would receive patches in the coming weeks. That announcement describes a rollout at that time, not a guarantee of current support; check the game’s current information. Sony says results vary by title and that players can turn PSSR off if they see unexpected visual effects. Read the March 2026 announcement.

A game-specific example is not a system-wide promise
CD Projekt Red’s April 7, 2026 PlayStation Blog article described a Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro update available the next day, with 4K visuals, advanced ray tracing, and performance changes. Those details apply to that game and update; they do not establish what another title will receive. See the publisher’s PS5 Pro enhancement details.

- On the PS5 home screen, highlight the game.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update. If an update is available, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it.
Sony says starting a game or application also updates it to the newest available version when one is available. A check that finds no update only means there is no newer version available to install through that process; it does not indicate that a graphics patch exists or is planned. Why might a PS5 Pro game not look different?
- The game may not be supported. PS5 Pro enhancements and PSSR are limited to titles that support them.
- The supported feature may not change what you notice. A title might improve frame rate or image reconstruction without changing all visual settings.
- The game may need its own update. Console capability alone does not install a developer’s game-specific changes; check for an update from the game’s Options menu.
- A PS4 image-quality setting may not be available. The PS5 Pro setting requires a CFI-7000 model-group console and a display supporting 2160p or 1440p at 60Hz.
