One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose the original if you want the game’s exact historical presentation or behavior; choose an updated edition if its documented changes better suit how you want to play. The label alone will not tell you how much changed, so compare the particular releases—story, mechanics, presentation, controls, and access to the classic version—before deciding.
What is the difference between an original, a remaster, and a remake?
An original is the release whose later versions you are comparing. A remaster generally updates aspects of an existing game’s presentation or compatibility, while a remake can rebuild or reinterpret more of the game. These are useful broad distinctions, not reliable promises about a specific title: publishers use labels differently, and the amount of change varies. Epic Games Store offers an overview of the distinction in its remakes-versus-remasters explainer.
For a horror game, the relevant question is not which label sounds more faithful. It is whether the release preserves the story, mechanics, structure, and pacing you care about—and what it changes around them.
How to decide which version to play
- Decide what you want from the game. If you want to experience a classic as it originally appeared or behaved, start with the original where it is legitimately available. If you would rather have documented presentation or usability changes, consider the updated release.
- Check what was preserved or rebuilt. Compare the story, gameplay mechanics, structure, and pacing. A new edition may preserve some elements and alter others; do not infer the extent of the changes from “remaster” or “remake” alone.
- Look at the specific presentation changes. Check the official listing for details about graphics, effects, sound, animation, and interface. For example, the Steam listing for Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER describes HD graphics and post-processing effects. That tells you what this edition offers, not which presentation you will prefer.
- Consider controls and convenience separately from fidelity. Look for changes that affect comfort or usability, but decide whether they suit you. PlayStation’s Legacy of Kain remaster announcement describes a goal of bringing a classic to modern hardware while preserving its integrity. A stated goal is useful context, but the actual changes still need to be judged release by release.
- Check whether you can access the classic presentation in the new edition. Some releases let you switch between classic and updated modes; many do not. If comparing the two matters to you, verify that feature rather than assuming it comes with a remaster.
- Verify legitimate availability for your platform and region. Check the official publisher or store page for the exact edition you want. Listings and platform availability can change, and a title’s presence on one storefront does not establish where every version is currently sold.
Examples of what “updated” can mean
Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER: updated presentation
Steam describes this specific survival-horror edition as featuring HD graphics and post-processing. Capcom’s GOG developer page lists the HD remaster alongside original Resident Evil releases and describes quirks in the old PC version. Together, these listings illustrate why the choice can involve both presentation and the particulars of a given release; they do not establish one version as best for every player.

Clock Tower: Rewind: a title-specific mode
PlayStation Blog describes Clock Tower: Rewind as an updated release of the classic game and identifies an enhanced Rewind mode. Treat that as an option specific to this release, not a standard feature of remasters.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered: switching between presentations
Double Fine’s Day of the Tentacle Remastered page documents classic and remastered modes, with options to mix and match graphics, audio, and interface elements. It is an adventure game, not a horror recommendation; its relevance here is that it demonstrates one way an updated release can let players compare or combine presentations.

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE: a more substantial reinterpretation
A remake is not simply another name for a remaster. KOEI TECMO Europe announced FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE for release on 12 March 2026 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam. This is an example of a remake, not a remaster; compare its documented changes with the original rather than assuming it offers the same experience with sharper graphics.
When the original is the better fit
- You specifically want the original presentation, behavior, or historical context.
- You want to understand how a game felt in its original release rather than experience later adjustments.
- The updated edition’s changes do not appeal to you, or the original is the version you want to compare against.
When an updated edition is the better fit
- Its documented changes to presentation or usability match your preferences.
- It offers a classic mode or other specific options you want, and the official description confirms those features.
- The exact edition is legitimately available on your platform and in your region, while the original you want is not readily available to you.
Availability is specific to the game, release, storefront, and region. For example, Capcom’s GOG page lists original Resident Evil releases as well as the HD remaster, but it does not establish availability for every platform or territory.
